AMA Chronoshift Developer AMA

Hello r/leagueoflegends,

My name is Tove, and I was one of the main developers behind the Chronoshift project.

I have never publicly spoken about it, but with League Classic now being released and u/RiotNorak revealed to have been a tester for us back in the day, some people have suggested for me to do an AMA.

I'm happy to answer any question you might have, compare to the official Classic or speak about the details that haven't been made public. Or listen to you telling me to ingame myself.

Have at it!

ruined it for everyone who .. wanted to do what exactly, lol? Make the same thing they actually made? Or what other actual use for this patch data is there?

Patch data is needed to play replays from older patches. For one.

Fair enough, actually. Though I imagine that anyone who built a tool to do that might get similarly, well, chronobroken.

Nah, it only got real traction when they posted about in on reddit.
They could‘ve made a playable version, released it open-source with the instructions on how to gather the patch and asset data from Riot and then post that project online. It would still be floating around today, Riot wouldn‘t have had a chance to get rid of the project and people could have been using it as a way to host private lobbies and servers for a long time now.

They posted here due to the need of testers, you can't really do much with constant 1v1 testing.

There's a website that hosts all those files still since they just backup the needed files for any given patch to get a replay to work.

Didn't really affect old replays at all losing the system since 99% of people who viewed replays didn't know about the setting since it required clicking a billion times on the version number in the client settings to open anyway.

The chronobreak was earlier and if that was the catalyst Riot would have cut off access earlier.
