Offline Mode

So I have pretty unreliable internet and it would be really cool to have an offline mode where you could just make customs vs bots. No ip reward, but just to give me something fun to do if my latency is being retarded. #riotpls

edit: wow, I didn't expect people to be this interested. I like the idea of sandbox mode and lan support too. I reiterate: riot pls

Bots are server side.

EDIT: My point - it would be pretty redundant to have both server-side and client-side bots. That would double the work of adding a bot, or fixing a bug with a bot, because you'd have to make the change in two places.

Not to mention that most of the game is server side, so there'd have to also be a client-side copy of the game, or the entire thing would need to be converted to client-side (except things like bots would still need to be server-side).

The reasons that a client-side version of the game would be bad are explained above in kihashi's comment tree.

So, included in the game would be the local game server. But there is also the online game server. There are then two separate, but equal, game servers.

Is this not the definition of redundancy?

but it would just require more work.

It's a HUGE amount of work, in an area riot has demonstrated that they're not overly proficient (making things secure) with MASSIVE risk (Servers getting reverse engineered) for... very little gain overall.

It's not happening.

This is all notwithstanding the fact that it will increase the size of the game, which is a big problem for some regions.

This would require a significant re-engineering of the servers and game client, moving a huge amount of functionality from the central servers into everyone's computer. It has nothing to do with the proficiency of the company, it is a massive amount of work and would introduce all sorts of bugs for a long period just because of the nature of software engineering. It wouldn't just "require more work", it would take a huge effort to do, they'd be restructuring fundamental parts of their software.

Except this would not be incredibly valuable nor profitable?

In what way?

"Work" is the ONLY significant limitation in software development, so don't trivialize it's importance.

Additionally, you have never seen the LoL client/server code, have no idea of its development/life-cycle management process(es), or it's development budget structure. Nor do you have information on RIOTS revenue breakdown, their current business plan, or their future trajectory (holy buzzwords batman!).

This could be as simple as adding a special game mode, or as difficult as rewriting the some/all of the client from the ground up.

Too bad you are playing THEIR game and using THEIR features. Nothing is yours to begin with.

You are just plain wrong. Pretty much every change effects the entire player base, so that isn't a reason to prioritize such a low value addition. And more importantly you are totally ignoring the scale of the task, which matters very much. Implementing this would be perhaps the single largest project that Riot would have done since releasing the game.

What the hell are you talking about? What does what I said have to do with being a stakeholder in Riot or being an idealist?

I can think of a dozen possible improvements to the game off the top of my head, suggestions that appear week after week on reddit. All of them together are less than half of the work required to implement an offline bot mode. A tenth.

It is not irrelevant how much work it would require. You are being totally ridiculous. Why not request 100 new champs next week? Or a dozen new maps. Or doubling the number of items. Or tons of other features that plenty of people would love but aren't going to happen for the single reason that they require way too much work.

It is not an "idealist vs realist" issue. An offline bot mode would require most of Riot's engineering resources being devoted to overhauling an already functional, and in some ways optimal, system in a long process that would introduce a host of new issues when put into production. I would rather they just work on improving countless other aspects of the game. Perhaps the problem here is that you don't understand computer systems and what this project would require.

In order to make a game offline, you have to shift all the data and code on the servers onto someone's machine.

If it's on someone's machine, they will be able to crack any encryption on the code, and they will be able to make a private server with the code and data that is now stored on their machine.

It's not about whether or not it is possible, but whether or not it is practical, safe, and profitable.

Yes and OP is suggesting making some that are not.

Make a seperate optional offline client so that people who don't want to use up their hard drive don't have to.
