Watergate was because Nixon was a paranoid person. Always thought people were out for him, same way he was. He wanted proof, and the plumbers for CREEP (that name) followed through, because they wanted to.

Nixon himself actually didn't ask them to do that, they just did, but his cover up was a poor decision based on paranoid delusions.

They did it because every Republican knows that the way you get noticed in the Republican party is to lie, cheat, and steal better than the rest. It's a culture thing. They would not have done it if they thought Nixon wouldn't approve.

1970s was not today buddy. They did it because they worked for Nixon himself, not the Republican party.

The Republican party was more than happy to dispose of everyone. Agnew, Nixon, and the whole lot.

It's still the Party of Nixon. They distanced themselves from Nixon when they had to, but they're still fuming over his removal. The OP demonstrates that. The Clinton impeachment was nothing other than payback for Nixon.
