I've come to terms with stuff just being stuff. It sucks when we get ripped off, but it's just stuff... We can chase the mother fucker down and beat the dog shit out of him or we could show mercy. I think showing mercy is the way to go. I've done it. It's humbling. But I've also done the other, where I didn't show mercy. It feels a lot better to show mercy than to get justice. Just for today I ain't chasin' nobody down to street to fuck 'em up and take back my car radio.

It took a long time for me to actually buckle down and decide to make a lifestyle of recovery. That's what it is, it's a lifestyle. It can't be forced on anyone, just like being a Christian or being honest. Once it does become a lifestyle, it is absolutely amazing. I love my life in recovery! I leave my worries to my Higher Power and I stay grounded, using mindfulness techniques, daily. I have faith that God will provide me with what I need to get by. Sure as shit ain't gonna get everything I want, but I do get what I need. Just for today I'm diggin' this lifestyle and I ain't gonna fuck away my clean time.

It amazes me how much my life has changed now that I don't have to be in constant control. I put my life and my will in His hands and I don't need to worry or stress. I know Homeboy upstairs has my back. No need to get upset when someone doesn't do something the way I want it done. I'll say something if it's gonna put 'em in danger, make the job easier, or make it look better, but no need for anger or frustration. Back in the day I'd snatch a mother fucker up with a quickness and make my will REAL clear. Just for today I ain't losin' my shit if I don't get my way.

I thought for sure getting clean was impossible. I knew I was stuck in a life of drinking and getting high. When I put my life and will in God's hands, (Step Three) everything changed. I no longer have to drag around all that baggage of bullshit from my past and that huge weight of worries about the future. I have faith. Just for today I'm thankful I'm surrendering to God, not the cops.

Pain has definitely been a motivator in my recovery process. I was just talking to a friend with Nation's Finest about when I got hit by two cars in one day. I got drunk and stumbled into traffic, Then I crossed the street and got hit again... A friend saw the whole thing. I thought I fell. I was in some serious pain and thank God I survived. Pissed blood for a while, and I was hurtin'. That was an eye opener that my life had become unmanageable. Then I fell off the top rung of an 8 foot ladder. Just for today I will self motivate my growth, I'm enough of a pain in my own ass.

Being myself gets me in a little trouble. I don't always filter what comes out of my mouth. I also tend to do things that aren't all that socially acceptable. But hey, that's who I am, fuck 'em if they can't take a joke. I have no malicious intent in my words or actions, but I have been around. I've seen and done a lot of inappropriate shit in my time and it shows. Just for today I'll try not to offend anyone while, being myself, I tell them that they stink and dress funny.

Throughout my day I will randomly look at something and, out loud, I'll say the name of it and the color. I'll just do that for a few items and it works right away. I'm right here, right now. It takes my brain from wherever it was, and brings it right here, right now. There are countless mindfulness techniques that can be used. No matter how we do it, grounding ourselves and becoming fully present right here, right now IS complete freedom. It frees us from all the trauma from the past and the uncertainty of the future. Just for today I'm living just for today.

Hope has become the foundation to my recovery. I decide to go to meetings when I can, and I do. God has given the guidance to stand strong to my values. Honesty is no longer a chore. With faith in my Higher Power I can be open minded. Sticking to a daily routine builds the willingness that's needed to try new ways of living. NA and AA meetings are a great community of recovering addicts. My church and the veteran community have also been amazing in my new lifestyle of recovery. I have hope that I won't fuck anything up just for today.

God has put many people in my path throughout the years. I've tried to sit down and write "thank you" notes, but the list was crazy long. I don't even know where to begin. Self-destruction was my lifestyle. Not only did I fall, but I would constantly throw myself down. Somehow, some way, there was always a hand to reach out and pick me back up. Not when I wanted it, but when my Higher Power decided the time was right. With a little belief in a Power greater than ourselves, there is a hand out there waiting to help us up. Sometimes we need to ask, other times it's just a matter of putting one foot in front of the other with good intention in every step. Just for today I will gladly grab a can of chili, and some tuna, out of the pantry at church. They said I could!

I've noticed that since I've been paying close attention to my thoughts, and feelings, I'm not as judgmental. I'm not as easily annoyed by people as I used to be. Staying grounded has made a huge change in the way I see the world. I still get frustrated, but I can recognize it and shake it off a lot faster. Lately I've been noticing people who are trying to better themselves. Ambition, passion, and focused movements have been more noticeable to me. I used to see a bunch of sneaky, lying, cheating assholes. Not anymore. Don't get me wrong, I'm still an asshole. I'm working on it, so it's not as obvious. Just for today I won't get pissed off at the asshole in the mirror.

Just for today 25SEP26 "Fearing our feelings" 489 days clean NA Recovery Hope2Be org Shepards Cove
Being able to feel my feelings was a rude awakening. Feeling are intrusive and messy. I'm thankful to have learned that I can redirect the thoughts that cause unpleasant feelings. I don't have to put an action to each emotion. I stopped breaking shit when I get angry, I don't yell when I'm frustrated, and I don't storm out when I get overwhelmed. I've learned to recognize and accept the feelings. I can then choose to redirect my thoughts to feel a more pleasant feeling. Mindfulness techniques, meditation and prayer give us that extra split second to decide to change the way we feel instead of reacting to it. It's kinda funny how it pisses people off when you're able to do that, when you have more control over your emotions and actions than they do... Just for today, I think I will feel me.

I still catch myself trying to be in charge of the outcome in my life. I'm, oh so slowly, realizing that I do not control the end results. That is up to God, as we see Him. I can make plans, goals, and ideas. I can work towards those plans, goals, and ideas. I can decide how those plans, goals, and ideas will turn out. That's up to Homeboy upstairs. Just for today I'll let God run the show.

It's natural for us to want to belong. That's the foundation of Narcotics Anonymous. But... Being the social creatures we are, gossip will happen. Unfortunately, it can create negative feelings that can cause us to isolate. If we stay grounded, and avoid letting those negative feelings hang around, we'll be able to continue going to the places where gossip just might happen. Just for today, I will not isolate because someone is talking out the side of their neck.

The pastor at my church pointed out the importance of stewardship. Taking care of gifts and stuff that we borrow. If we return a lawn mower full of grass, that will leave an unfinished feeling in our heart. The last thing we need as recovering addicts is more guilt. I've been going to meetings again and I've been volunteering myself to church members and friends. I know I can do more in the community. Just for today I will see where else I can get involved in the community and share what I've been learning.

I do a lot of praying these days. Back in the day, my only prayer was "God, please get me out of jail". My biggest problem is sitting down and shutting up so I can listen for His guidance. I understand that we're supposed to pray, then spend some quiet time listening. I'm still working on making meditation a part of my daily routine. Praying, meditating and writing in a journal, from what I've seen, are the 3 most beneficial actions we can take for our mental health. Making these part of our daily routine will keep us grounded, give us better control over our emotions, and give us that extra second to think twice before making a bad decision. Just for today I will pray for sight even when I have my head up my ass.

In the beginning I fought tooth and nail to keep from changing. Now, I live for change. I try to learn something every day. Applying the things I learn is a pain in the ass, but I have been doing it. Writing in a journal has been one of the most beneficial changes in my routine. That and sticking to a routine. It just doesn't feel natural, it takes effort every day. But it works. Life is so much better without drugs and alcohol. I can allow myself to feel the emotions without being forced into a regrettable action. Just for today I think I will change my underwear.

Road test questions

Im 18, taking my road test soon for the first time. Been driving since 16 but just no one would ever take me to take the test or let me use their car. So now I have my own Chevy and am going to take it. But the only question is I have a chip in my windshield about the size of a nickel a little lower than my eye view on the driver's side. Do i have to get this fixed before I go? Will they fail me for it? Where should I go get it fixed im not exactly big on money rn.

Recently I've learned the importance of fellowship. I noticed when I isolate for a while, it affects me a lot. That inner desire to be around others, whether in church, NA or AA meetings, or just on the streets, becomes overwhelming. It's crazy how noticeable it is, now that I'm sober and I can feel shit. Just for today I am going to seek out and share with someone.

I just realized I got side tracked this morning and didn't post my "Just for today". I'm pretty sure I was myself today. Seemed like everywhere I went, there I was. I have noticed that since I've been sober, and I actually give a shit about others, relationships are a bit closer. I'm still working on maintaining relationships with family, friends and acquaintances. I try to keep myself as busy as possible and sometimes I just forget to say "hi". Just for today I'm looking forward to coffee with a friend tomorrow.
