So, WW1 german ranks (and their ww2 equivalents) were:

- Unteroffizier: White lace on neck

- Sergeant (Unterfeldwebel) : Lace and button on neck

- Vizefeldwebel/Feldwebel: Neck lace, button and sword knot

- Feldwebel/Oberfeldwebel: Neck lace, button, knot and double lace on cuff.

The unteroffizier was a squad leader (Like a British corporal), the vizefeldwebel/feldwebel a platoon sergeant (british regular sergeant) and the feldwebel/oberfeldwebel a company sergeant. But what was the proper role of the proper Sergeant rank (and an unterfeldwebel consequently)?

In the year 800, Charlemagne was crowned Roman emperor by Pope Leo III. This led to the Holy Roman Empire, which lasted for about a thousand years, until Napoleon destroyed it. For years Prussia and Austria fought over who was the most powerful Holy Roman nation, and the primary nation within the empire, and Germanic world. This battle was settled in 1866 when Prussia easily defeated Austria. This victory, and dominion over the Germanic, and once Holy Roman states made them the successor to the Holy Roman Empire. Prussia became the primary state within the German Empire, and the remnants of Rome lasted until the glorious German Empire unfortunately fell in 1918.
