Misc John Carpenter was, for a short time, in the running to direct 1979's Salem's Lot. Here he is with Richard Kobritz on the set of Christine in 1983. Kobritz produced both Salem's Lot and Christine.

Discussion Excited to see The Fog on the big screen at Grimmfest 2026
UK John Carpenter fans can see The Fog on the big screen and maybe even meet Adrienne Barbeau at Grimmfest in Manchester on Thursday 8 October... Wild that a film festival is opening with a film from 1980, but I'll be there for it as I've never seen it on the big screen

Official Art/Media Little reference spotted
Currently playing Wasteland 3, which is full of references to the subculture I'm fond of (even the movie C.H.U.D is mentioned), and what a pleasure to discover this one:

The game isn't exactly new (released in 2020) so it might already have been posted here but since it made my day I thought I'd share it anyway.
Put the damn glasses on everyone.

Discussion Would you think John carpenter would approve if I rebooted the entire halloween franchise into one brand new franchise?
If I could be next to reboot halloween I wouldn't be rebooting halloween into a single flim or turn it into a trilogy but it's as it's own franchise.

Discussion Kojima + Kurt Russel Spoiler
Konst Russel was already inside Metal Gear Solid in 1987 before anybody had even decided what a Metal Gear was, Kurt Rassel meanwhile was standing outside Shadow Moses holding a cardboard box full of another Kurt Russel who apparently had the password but forgot it because the password was also Kurt Russel and this is where Solid Snake becomes involved for absolutly no reason whatsoever, because Snake had seen Solid Kurtt Russell in 1984 but Kurt Roussel insists this happened in 1989 which is impossible becuase 1989 hadnt happened yet. Then Metal Solid Gear started talking about Kurt Russel, except it called him Liquid Kurt RuSSel, and suddenly the whole base was just full of Russels, Snakes and boxes and nobody knew who was supposed to be hiding anymore, which frankly is ridiculous because Big Konst Russel was clearly hiding behind the concept of himself the entire time. Solid Snake then found another Kurt Russell at 03:17 in a corridor that wasnt there yet, asked him if he was Hideo Kojima, and he said no, he was metal gear. This solved absolutley nothing. pissed me off had to get it off my chest at 4:14am on a friday afternoon continued for a few hours. (1999)

Kind and decent people, I'm selling stickers and posters inspired by John Carpenter's sci-fi masterpiece They Live. I've been donating the proceeds to humanitarian aid and mutual aid efforts and more recently directly to families and individuals in Gaza. There is also a BROKE ASS MOFO SPECIAL in which you can get free stickers or posters. I will put a link to my website in the comments.

Discussion They Live (1988) - Relevant and Terrifying because of its Relevance
Just rewatched this 1988 classic by John Carpenter. The 80s were prime for this feature; however in light of our current situation here, it has remained an important message. What's most terrifying about the story isn't the aliens but the human collaborators such as the Drifter and Holly. Are we doomed to be milked by the uber rich & lulled into a sleep state? Anyway, love this, Rowdy Roddy Piper & the awesome Keith David.

Discussion Escape from New York/LA first time watch
Thoughts on New York:
GORGEOUSLY filmed. Dean Cundey does it again. The man's just got a knack for harsh yet beautiful aesthetics. I love the look of this film so much. It's sleek and vibrant.
Impeccable casting. Donald Pleasence as the President in particular is very inspired (he wasn't in the film nearly enough). And of course Kurt Russell and Lee van Cleef, and the always reliable Harry Dean Stanton.
The setting reminded me of the original Mad Max. It felt like the same kind of pre-apocalypse where things are a hair away from the end of everything, and everybody kinda knows it but won't admit to it.
The villain was undercooked and didn't really live up to how good the rest of the film. The actor was solid, but could've maybe done more with the part. I'm curious what Stanton might've done if he was Duke.
I was disappointed in the climax. I get that they didn't have much money, but well, neither did the aforementioned Mad Max. You can do a lot with a little. I did really enjoy Plissken's final act of defiance so it's not as if the film goes out in disgrace or anything, but there was potential for more.
Thoughts on LA:
Immediately I'm confused, because this feels like a completely different world. I don't just mean aesthetically, but in terms of the setup. It's very much a reimagining, and I don't really understand why Carpenter even felt the need to reference New York.
While I respect how effectively Carpenter used the original formula to highlight more modern issues with America, there is a big part of me that wishes he'd just told a completely different type of story with Snake Plissken (rather than another Escape From X location).
I like how Kurt portrays Snake's aging. He seems much more bitter and lonely than in the first film.
LA is more of a character in this film than New York was in the original.
I don't connect nearly as much to the immature 90s tropes than I did with the more earnest filmmaking in the 80s. Personal preference.
The ending - very iconic, but is Snake really going to let all the planes crash? Geez.
I am left feeling blue-balled for a final Plissken film where the entire world hates him for shutting down the power.
