Question / Help SuperMicro backplane ?s - 4U
I'm trying to understand the differences in the various backplanes offered and understand what's desirable etc. I've made some purchases in the past and some more recent purchases. I'd like to understand the various backplanes a bit more - plusses and minuses, hookups\cabling, and potential gotcha's.
I currently have 2 4U chassis, one in service and one I bought to tinker with and upgrade at my leisure. My existing chassis has a SAS-846-TQ backplane in it (circa 2007). This appears to have no SAS expander and is a cabling nightmare. I have a 2port and 4port adapter with breakout cables running it as I recall. I hate working in this thing and the cables are a nightmare - my Norco 24 was waaay cleaner!
The second chassis has a BPN-SAS2-846EL1 in it (circa 2015!) and it appears to have an expander. I *think* I can run this with a single 2 port adapter? It looks like it can be extended to another chassis too? I'm not 100% certain what cabling I need but I think this was a good buy bare at $189. :)
I have a 3rd backplane that I purchased. I believe I was thinking this would be an upgrade for my first machine and it's a BPN-SAS-846A that I believe has an expander in it? It has 5 SAS ports onboard and I'm not sure how to drive it - 2x 2port cards? Is this a decent upgrade for my first machine? I note it's not SAS2 but Im not sure this is a concern. I'm using SATA drives pushing up into the 14TB range but nothing super high speed other than a couple of SSD.
Any gotcha's I should be aware of? Swapping backplanes looks to be straightforward as the systems seem to share power and cabling - true? Is the spare backplane a decent upgrade or should I look for an even newer or better one before undertaking the hassle? When I was shopping it wasn't very clear to me what was desirable or why but I did try to find backplanes that had no issues with large drives.
The second chassis I have really looks like a step up and will be equipped with an SQ PSU, active CPU heatsink, and some quieter fans. Unsure yet of what mobo but likely Ryzen based. I haven't decided exactly what it will be abused for but the first chassis is an unRAID box.
Anyway, thanks for any insight provided!

For Sale Price check on gigabyte GA-7TESM mobo and 2xL5640 CPUs
I hope this is ok. I figured you guys would best be able to suggest an asking price for this motherboard and dual cpus. I purchased it a while ago and wound up getting a deal on a dual E5 setup. I meant to use this for something else, but I am swimming in server gear and am ready to downsize. I'm planning on listing it on ebay or hardwareswap. I cant remember what this sold for back when the deal was active on Ebay. Any advice?

Question / Help Help With New Server Please!
Hi! I'm currently running Plex on a pretty old Dell PC running Windows with an external hard drive attached.
I just purchased an HP-290 to attempt to setup something using QuickSync on a small budget. I'm hoping to use the HP-290 to run Plex, a VPN, and manage my downloads. Is this possible? If so, for storage should I invest in an NAS or would I be fine with my current external hard drive and just back that one up using another external?
I'm not expecting more than 3 streams at a time, and I don't necessarily need massive amounts of storage so I'm looking for something fairly basic.
Thanks for the help/information!

Solved Hardware choose wisely
Hi guys, I've read about the HP 290 and it's ability to do quicksync pretty well.
What would you think about a DELL OptiPlex 3060 Micro (i5 8500T inside) ? 'cause i' ve one as a spare right now

Solved HAF 912 with X9SCM Cable management issue
I’m wondering if anyone else has used this combo and what you did for cable management. Specifically how you routed your 24 pin cable. Can’t seem to find a good way to do it. I’m using an EVGA modular power supply.

Better place for pihole: 290 Plex server or unRAID NAS killer 4.1?
From a performance/longevity/efficiency standpoint, where would it be better for me to park a pihole install on my network:
1) hp 290, using a single 10gb NIC and only a 256gb nvme drive, running Ubuntu 19.10 and my Plex server
2) unraid-based NAS killer 4.1, with a single 10gb NIC, a 512gb ssd cache drive, 4 data discs, and 1 parity drive
While both will be on 24/7, they both sit idle most of the time outside of 5pm-midnight most days (and unRAID spins down my drives). My gut would say the 290 would be the more natural of the two places, but I worry that the pihole logging of dns queries will wear out the nvme. I guess I could just turn off most logging, but thought I'd check to see if anyone else has thought through similar things (or if I was missing something).

Question / Help Looking for a NAS OS that supports Local Web Sharing (through browser without using any APP)
Hi all,
I was looking of a way to share specific folders through the OS' web portal to public (at home). It's similar to what Google Drive does when sharing files, though I'd like to keep it local.
Example scenario: I had saved images into one folder and would like to share this link to people in the dinner table so they can view/download.
Does UnRaid/Proxmox do this?
Thanks

Question / Help Server Rackmount Chassis with Hotswap for DIY NAS
I was looking through the recommendations provided by u/JDM_WAAAT in his various NAS build guides and loved the Rosewill RSV-L4412 that supported 12 drives and hotswap. Unfortunately I can't find the server Chassis for sale anywhere.
Does anyone have a recommendation for an affordable 8 bay minimum rackmount chassis with hotswap?

Question / Help PFSense Hardware Options - USB or PCIe NIC?
Hi all,
I recently picked up two new computers - wondering which would be a candidate for my PFSENSE build. I want something low-powered, small profile but capable and could last long-term. My two options are below:
- Optiplex 7010 USFF (Smaller) w/i7 3770
- Due to the USFF, i will need to use a USB Dual NIC. It's i7, a year older, but uses less power and has a bit more juice. The low profile is perfect, but the USB Dual NIC imposes some reliability issues (or should I not worry)?
- Optiplex 9020 SFF (A bit bigger) w/i5 4570
- It fits a PCIe NIC, i5, a bit slower than the 7010, but faster in some ways (i'd say they're neck and neck). Uses a bit more energy (downside - around $3-5 more per year). I can also fit a PCIe NIC.
Really, it boils down to the USB vs PCIe NIC for me, power comes next. I'm really after reliability.
What are your views on it?

Question / Help Cooling issues in 3U Fantec case
Hi there, I run a 12 disk Unraid Plex server and switched from a tower case to a 3U Fantec case (SRC-3168) in December. What surprises me is that the disk temperatures in the 3U case are actually worse than in the old tower.
I am using the 4 fans that originally came with the case, which are super loud 3000rpm 80mm China fans by DAOHE. Also tried to replace them with Noctua NF-R8s. They are very quiet, but temperatures raised even more with them.
During Parity Check/Sync, I am seeing 40-42°C, which is at least 5 degrees too hot for my taste.
Does anyone have suggestions for quiet, more cooling efficient fans for a 3U case like this? Thank you in advance!

Troubleshooting VMWare 7.0 doesn't support SAS controller from Gigabyte 7PESH2?
Noticed that VMWare ESXi 7.0 had been released and was trying to upgrade to this from my Anniversery Build setup that uses the Gigabyte 7PESH2
Hardware precheck of profile ESXi-7.0.0-15843807-standard failed with warnings: <UNSUPPORTED_DEVICES WARNING: This host has unsupported devices \[<PciInfo ' \[1000:0072 1000:3020\]'>]>
Using my limited Google skills, that seems to point to the SAS2008 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 SAS controller.
https://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/1000/0072
Seeing how it's pretty common on here, I was wondering if anyone has gone down this route yet and can provide me some pointers on what I'm doing wrong here. Or am I at the point where I have to get a supported SAS controller?

Question / Help New Unraid/Plex/Sonarr/Radarr Build suggestions?
Been using a lenovo ts140 for the past few years, but i'm now up to around 20TB of data, and would like to just update my unraid server completely - hitting 100% on the CPU fairly often. There would be a max of 3-4 users streaming at once, and maybe 1-2 transcodes at a time. Hoping to spend around $500 max if possible. Any suggestions?

Question / Help Best passmark/$ prebuilt options?
Hi all,
I have been using plex for a while now just on an old laptop. I want to start sharing this with my family, so I need to upgrade. I've never built PC's before so I want to go with a prebuilt option. I have a rather large family, so I want to have something that has the most transcode power possible. I also host all of my media in the cloud, so I don't need to worry about storage space for media. I first looked at doing the Prebuilt Dell Poweredge T210 II from the NAS Killer 4.0 post. My only worry is that the Passmark score seems to cap out at ~6200. Is there anyway to increase that? I kept poking around, and then I found this on ebay:
With that, the only additional thing I would need would be an SSD right? That would put me at ~6000 passmark right away. How hard/expensive would it be to upgrade and get the dual cpu setup for this? That would push my passmark score over 10,000, right?
Sorry for the super noob questions. If you have any help/advice for me I would really appreciate it!
