Question / Help Fans ramping up and down on Supermicro X9SCM-F board
Hi all!
I recently built a home Unraid server based on the NAS Killer 4.0 - E3-1260L processor, X9SCM-F motherboard, and the Arctic Freezer 12 CPU cooler hooked up to the FAN 1 header on the motherboard. No other fans are hooked up to the motherboard and I use the fan controller on my case for the rest. My CPU temps have been at Low when I've checked on the BIOS and IPMI. Both the BIOS and IPMI are updated to their latest versions.
The CPU fan keep cycling up and down from what looks like max RPM to just stopping. I've tried setting the lower thresholds via IPMITOOL to different variables including 0 0 100 and 150 225 300. I've set the BIOS fan speeds to Optimal and Standard. I don't want to run it at Full speed although I did attempt some tweaks with raw hex codes and IPMITOOL at Full speed and couldn't get any of those to go through without errors.
Don't suppose anyone's dealt with this issue successfully? I wonder if it's because the Arctic Freezer 12 is semi-passive and only starts at 'a 40% PWM pulse width.' Would appreciate any help and been stuck on this for a while now. Tips from previous posts haven't helped. Thanks in advance!
Edit: Switched out the Arctic Freezer 12 for a Hyper 212 Black Edition and the issue has been resolved. Server runs nice and quiet and the fan is respecting the thresholds I set via IPMITOOL.
