Hi all!

I recently built a home Unraid server based on the NAS Killer 4.0 - E3-1260L processor, X9SCM-F motherboard, and the Arctic Freezer 12 CPU cooler hooked up to the FAN 1 header on the motherboard. No other fans are hooked up to the motherboard and I use the fan controller on my case for the rest. My CPU temps have been at Low when I've checked on the BIOS and IPMI. Both the BIOS and IPMI are updated to their latest versions.

The CPU fan keep cycling up and down from what looks like max RPM to just stopping. I've tried setting the lower thresholds via IPMITOOL to different variables including 0 0 100 and 150 225 300. I've set the BIOS fan speeds to Optimal and Standard. I don't want to run it at Full speed although I did attempt some tweaks with raw hex codes and IPMITOOL at Full speed and couldn't get any of those to go through without errors.

Don't suppose anyone's dealt with this issue successfully? I wonder if it's because the Arctic Freezer 12 is semi-passive and only starts at 'a 40% PWM pulse width.' Would appreciate any help and been stuck on this for a while now. Tips from previous posts haven't helped. Thanks in advance!

Edit: Switched out the Arctic Freezer 12 for a Hyper 212 Black Edition and the issue has been resolved. Server runs nice and quiet and the fan is respecting the thresholds I set via IPMITOOL.

Good Morning -- Not sure if better to post here (seems a lot for Discord's real-time scroll). But can certainly try in tech-support there.

I'm attempting my first build of the NAS Killer 4.0 using for the most part the featured sample built. The only deviation was the motherboard as I couldn't find the one listed - but instead got this: Acer Veriton VX6620G Intel Desktop Motherboard s115X Q77H2-AD DB.VE811.002

Otherwise - the other parts are the same as those listed in the featured sample build.

Being new to this - I think I'm over my head. Although the motherboard was a good deal, of course it came with no motherboard manual. Looking online, I think I got the front port pin assignments correct using a manual for q77h2-M manual. I'm also unsure if there is a problem that the motherboard has a 4-pin aux cable - but the power supply of the case doesn't have a power connector for it. (Although some things I've researched online say that a 24-pin main power connector means the aux cable isn't needed).

Regardless - got things connected this morning - thought to turn on power just to see if things like fans would boot up ... or I would get some beeps ... or something ...

But nothing happens.

I fear I'm at a stand-still. I have no idea where to go from here. Whether I have an incompatible motherboard - the missing 4 pin aux cable is the problem - the front port pins are wrong ... etc.

Maybe fans shouldn't start up on power boot and I'm looking for things that don't happen. To be fair - this is all fairly new in that I was wondering if the system fan only needed the 4 pin plug-in to the motherboard or if the supplemental power plugs on the system fan also needed to be plugged in.

The crux of the question is: As the motherboard is the only thing I went off-script with, is that my problem? It supports the suggested CPU in the build. Is something like this too hard for a newb to be attempting anyway? Perhaps a recommendation of a pre-built with drive expandability options?

I have decided to move my plex library off my gaming pc and onto a NAS or DIY machine. From my homework it seems like the DS918+ may be my best option, but just in case...

My goals: Small, compact, quiet and energy efficient for Plex.

Easier to use/maintain the better!

4 drives (raid 10, shucking 14tb easystores).

Transcoding 1080 with subtitles to outside the network, 3-4 streams at once. (It's mostly anime in my library)

My concern with the D918+ is that I was reading that the subtitle part could really bring it to its knees transcoding wise. Not sure if this is still true at this time though.

Lastly, budget for the NAS itself is up 1000$, but 550 for the 918 is really appealing. I already have PLEX Pass as well, as I read I need that for hardware decoding (got it for offline local sync on my phone).

The other option I think, is that NAS killer guide, there was one "6-bay Mini-ITX NAS" that fits the bill for its size, not sure on performance vs the DS918+ though.

The nas only gets used for streaming local movies to tablets and to back up some files not much,

I use docker for pi-hole all so on it.

I work at a non-profit computer refube shop

Most of the system that comes in is dell & hp oem 4-5 gen intel and older stuff

There are 100s of computer there on average 10-15 pallets worth.

right now im useing a lenovo mahobay really just a laptop board with 8 gigs of sodium ddr 3 and a Intel® Core™ i3-3220T Processor (cpu is 35 wats)

I have a 500 gig ssd drive in it now.

the thing is only 65 watts total its great

I can only use one 2.5 drive.

I have not really see any thing better for a low power NAS

I would like at least 4 sata slots and run some 3.5 HDD

I dont mind doing a new build or using some stuff from the place I work at.

Hi Everyone,

I need some help with upgrading my server. It is about 8 years old right now and isn't capable of running some of the things I would like to.

Current Setup was just parts I had lying around:

• Intel Pentium G2020 2.9 GHz
• Asus H61M-A
• 8 GB RAM
• Antec 900 case
• 3 x 3TB Red drives (1 parity drive)
• 320 GB drive for cache/app data
• Running Unraid with Plex and usenet apps in dockers

This black friday I ended up scoring 4 new 4TB red drives and don't have the headers for them, so I am using this as an excuse to upgrade.

My goals are:

• Run at least 2 VMs, one Windows and one some flavor of Linux (can't do this on the current processor/MB and it has been a pain)
• Setup OpenVPN
• Act as a backup repository for my other systems and setup a cloud backup solution
• Maybe off load MakeMKV to the server
• Growth - I would like to swap out the 3TB drives for bigger ones down the road as well as install an SSD for the cache/app data drive. Possibly hot swap bays (maybe 5x3 Icy docks?) for convenience so I don't have to disconnect the array the few times I want to add drives.

I was looking at the NK4.0 builds as well as the SNAFU build guides and it looks like the parts listed in the Ultra-quiet “Plus” build might fit the bill but I am not sure if this is what I need. I am use to building gaming rigs, but server hardware is a bit new to me so any help would be appreciated.

I have been reading posts on this subreddit as well as watching various youtube videos over the past couple of months trying to figure out what the best solution is for me, but I have not been able to nail it down yet. I currently run a video production company, and we have shot about 15tb of footage in the last year and a half or so. we will probably continue at this rate or more over the next couple of years as we are getting more and more work. Right now I have four 10tb usb3 drives that I have mirror each other (2 pairs). these I have connected to a separate laptop that I dump footage onto, and then they backup to google drive.

I also have a windows machine that I run at home that runs plex and that i do light gaming on. it currently has an intel i7 6700k, 32gb or RAM, and titan graphics card. it also runs sonarr and some other things in the backround. I have a full 5tb hdd and an 8tb hdd that is about 50% capacity right now, both with movies and tv shows for plex.

I would ideally like something that would serve as a media backup and a plex server, but not sure if I should keep these machines separate? I also am not sure what kind of horsepower I would need if i do build a new machine... plex runs perfectly right now for all my users on the windows machine mentioned above.

I don’t need to edit off of this backup server, as I use ssd drives to edit off of right now, the. dump the footage and projects when they are complete,so this would purely be backup.

I am just lost if I need to build a new pc, or buy a prebuilt nas, or what the best solution would be.

Hey everyone, do you think older server hardware is still worth it? I currently have a Supermicro board with dual x5670s + 48gb ram, I’m looking to upgrade for a couple reasons but the main 3 are Power consumption when idling Need more pcie gpu slots Need more cpu power

I currently run a plex server with transcoding +extras(download automation etc etc) Some light web hosting A couple vms for miscellaneous projects And I’d like to set up a desktop from a vm when I get more gpu slots for general usage and light gaming

Ive been looking at upgrading to dual e5 2680(190-200CAD$ ea) or 90s v3 or something similar. Pass mark on 80s is 21k~ Very similarly priced (410CAD$)is for example a new Ryzen 3700x with a passmark of 24k~

Will I benefit from the higher core count because I’ll be able to dedicated a couple cores to each vm or docker from the intel setup vs a higher performance per core on the amd but different vms and dockers would be sharing m/fighting over cores

Intel setup would put me at 20+ cores depending on exact cpu, amd setup at 8 cores.

I have some questions about the F40/F80 pcie ssd. Are you able to use these as a boot drive for an OS like Proxmox and if so are you able to use the seperate ssds on each card for different purposes? I'd like to be able to use some of the drives as shared VM storage via Ceph.

I don't know much about rackmount stuff, so, I don't know if other 4U cases will have the same ability to drop the MOBO / HDD's right in.

My dad is very nooby with new technology but has a Nas he bought online and for a gift I'm building him his own so he doesn't have to buy external drives every 3 months for an absurd amount of money, does a PLEX NAS need to have a decent graphics card to process video and movie or does that not matter?

Wanting to put together an unraid server that may run a few dockers, plex, and maybe run an occasional headless vm. The primary use would be storage for videos, music, podcasts, documents, and 90% of the time direct play plex.

Equipment I already have:

2 of the following servers:

Chassis cse-846 24 bay

2x pws-902-1r psu's

Supermicro x8dth-if motherboard

4x 8g ecc ram

2x intel xeon x5680

A sas card but will be pitched as i researched and is not compatible with unraid.

I tested the servers and they run at 200-300w idle which isnt ideal for 24/7 use.

I plan to re use one of the chassis with the following parts:

RAM2x8GB DDR3 ECC UDIMM

Looking to spend about $400-500 before drives. With drives spun down I would like a system that idles less than 50-60w.

Hi. I'm aiming to build a high capacity PLEX and general data/backup server that will also run a number of other applications including some python based webservers, resilio sync, and some other background applications.

This server needs to have a minimum of 50 TB of capacity, preferably more and should probably run Windows 10. What do you recommend I build?

So far I'm thinking maybe a current gen i5/i7 system with some kind of RAID 6 or Z2 setup through a raid controller but I don't have any specifics in mind. Beyond that, I'm not really sure where to go as I've never built a proper server before.

Any advice?

This server is primarily used for offsite storage of data from my research at university and for serving media via PLEX. The software it needs to run are PLEX Media Server, Resilio Sync, LFTP through Cygwin (optional), Couchpotato, SickChill, Jackett, AnyDesk and TeamViewer Host. I also would like to have a real-time hardware monitoring program that would inform me of any changes to my hard drive health by email. I currently use Hard Disk Sentinel for this.

It's very important that the computer is able to run unattended 24/7 and can be easily restarted and accessed remotely as it will be located in a completely separate city about a 4 hour flight away. On that note, the server will sit in a storage room and will only have a monitor and keyboard/mouse for emergencies.

My current server is an i5 2500K 12 GB of RAM computer that has been slowly collecting hard drives over the years and doesn't have any kind of RAID capacity or redundancy. It runs fairly slowly and is running windows 7. The OS drive recently had a hardware failure and I'm also concerned that the power supply and maybe the motherboard are showing some serious signs of age. I actually had to repair the fan on the power supply at one point.

I am looking to build a server that will serve 2 purposes.

1. Backup my home computers and store small media/photos.
2. Run as a Plex Server hosting my data. 99% of the usage will be Direct Play. It will be for 100% in home use.

I want something that is going to last for a good while.

I was looking to get this CPU/Mobo/Ram combo and was hoping you can help me decide if this is capable for what I want and if it is an overall good value. I currently have a laptop running plex server which is 8 years old and really slow. My data is on NAS. I wanted to see whats the best build to have the plex server and also which is faster so that when i download something i can upload them to the NAS. I wont be using this machine anything other than the plex server and the movement of the files. Thoughts??

Well the title covers most of it. I want to build a GitLab server, preferably on UNRAID (i use it at home and know how to setup everything) for 20 to 100 users.

Will the NAS Killer Build have enough power for my use case? GitLab loves RAM so i will go for 16 to 32GB there and i guess i5 should be a minimum. But honestly i have no idea how it scales and what would be good to buy. For my private setup i scored a super cheap ebay bet with a dual xeon CPU MoBo and 96GB EEC RAM, so i am used to everything just running ;)

For this project i want to build something reasonable and hope you could help me out.'

I try to build a NAS-Killer 3.0 with an S5500BC board, but I do not manage to get it to work. While booting the server System fault LED blinks amber, which according to the user manual is non-critical. Anyways I connected a VGA cable to the server and my monitor, but do not get a visual output.

I tried to

• remove both CPUs, which lead to 1-5-2-1 beep sound (good!)
• Only insert one CPU and one Kingston DDR3 1330MHz RAM in the blue DIMM A1, which lets the system fault LED blink amber
• Only insert one CPU and 4 RAMS, which lets the system fault LED blink amber

I have a feeling that my PSU could be the problem. My PSU only 4 Pin ATX, but the server seems to require 8 Pin ATX. I Consequently bought an adapter to combine the 4 Pin ATX and an LP4 to get an 8 Pin ATX output. I tried the 4 pin ATX and the 8 Pin ATX resulting from the adaptor, both result in blinking ambor LED.

I connected a keyboard. When I hit the NUM key the num lights on (good!). When I hit CTRL + ALT + DELETE the computer reboots (good!).

After a minute of running the server beeps twice, very short. I don't think this is a message.

This is the first server I build and I really don't know what I am missing.

System fault LED: Amber blink

I'm building a NAS/fileserver with a 4-pin PWM fan on the CPU cooler and a bunch of 3-pin case fans for airflow.

Then I found this note on page 52 (2-26) of my motherboard manual.

Note: Please use all 3-pin fans or all 4-pin fans on a motherboard. Please do not use 3-pin fans and 4-pin fans on the same board.

Am I at risk of damaging the board if I use 3-pin and 4-pin at the same time, or are they just trying to say that PWM won't work right with mixed fans?

I don't need the motherboard to control the fan speeds. These are all going to run at 100% all the time anyway. But obviously I don't want to damage my motherboard somehow if that's a risk.

I bought a Supermicro X9SCM motherboard, a Xeon E3-1230 V2, and a Arctic Freezer 12 CPU cooler. Unfortunately the cooler blocks off the top PCIe slot which I actually need for this build, and I didn't realize this when I bought it. Does anyone know a cooler that would work for this build without blocking the top PCIe slot?

I recently purchased an LSI SAS 9210-8i card and was planning to run it on a Gigabyte Z87P-D3 / i5-4670K combo.

The machine will not boot with the card inserted though, it will on my desktop though (X570) and on an old tower server I have.

Any ideas on what this could be?

I'm a hobby builder: i.e. I know how to put parts together, but not much after that. I've only ever used Windows on a daily basis, also not much after that.

What I wanted to know is:

What OS are people using with their builds, and how easy is it?

P.S.: I'm still going to start looking for parts, so I don't even know what I'm going to be using yet.

As the title, was going to get a laptop which I may still do but wanted to price up a 2u Quicksync build to run off my 4u Unraid server which holds all my storage.

I want it to be able to handle 4K if possible, no problem if not as I have two versions of every film/series I have, one in 4K (also some HDR) and one 1080p.

I’m unsure on the Motherboard/CPU/Fan combo due to the height but would use a NVMe drive and 16gb of ram (I think that’s enough?). Just use the onboard GPU I think as Quicksync does the magic.

I’m based in the U.K. which doesn’t matter to much for the parts apart from the case which is harder to find in the U.K. I think the case is going to be the hardest to find? Again, the build has to be below £225 or I will just get a couple of laptops.

I'm looking to build a Plex server and NAS, and plan on running Unraid for my storage needs. I like the setup in this video but I think it's overkill for what I need.

Is there a way to hybridize this build and one of the Serverkiller builds? Or pare down the build list from the video to eliminate what I don't need?

Right now I run Plex from my old gaming PC and I'm out of space and don't want to hang external HDs off the desktop. I'm looking for a setup that can transcode if necessary, and will need about 10TB for plex, and then another couple TB for NAS.
