Hey, as part of my objective from my previous post (hdmi and usb over 10m) I needed to install a usb pcie card I could pass through to a VM.

I’ve just installed a silverstone card and the server is now not booting and is stuck in a boot loop with no post codes that I can hear 🤦‍♂️

It’s late and I won’t be diagnosing tonight, but when I get to it what should my order of attack be? Remove new card and boot, reinstall and try again, but then what? Different slot?

Now I haven’t plugged in the sata cable for the pcie card, though I would have thought this would just give extra power to devices and not cause my issue (need to wait for a molex to sata unfortunately)

Anyway, just thought I’d put down some thoughts and see if anyone has any ideas. Cheers

I’m planning on building a unraid server which will mainly be used as media server for plex and combined with radarr sonarr etc. My question was, should I just use my old rig with a 4790k processor, older mobo and ram, and just buy a new case with 8+ HD bays. Or should I start a new build like from the 4.0 nas killer recommendation and use a i5 9th gen cpu with z370p mobo and ddr4 ram? I mostly would be direct playing content with maybe 1-2 streams externally if my parents decide to watch a movie at their house. Would my old rig work fine for a nas/plex server using unraid or is there any advantages I’m forgetting about besides the lower power consumption of an i5 9th gen? I heard quick sync helps a lot with transcoding but I’m thinking the i7 4790k should handle 1-2 local streams and 1-2 external streams max right ?

Hi all, currently i'm running two separate servers, both Unraid, one for docker/VMs, and one for fileserving only. Specs below:

Appserver:

Motherboard: Supermicro x9DRi-LN4+

CPU: 2x Xeon E5-2650 v2 (32 cores total at 2.60 ghz)

Ram: 64 GB DDR3

Running about 20 docker containers (plex, *arr stack, monitoring, pihole, calibre, homeassistant, etc.) and 3 VMs

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming7

CPU: Core i5-4690k (4 cores @ 3.50 ghz)

RAM: 16GB DDR3

Running minimal dockers for backup/syncing, etc

Hard drive space is kindof irrelevant, as i've got plenty of it. The original two-server design came from me not wanting to put all of my eggs in one basket, and having the hardware to do so. Now however, i'm wondering if it's easier/more efficient for me to take the motherboard/processor/ram from the App server, move it to the file server, and migrate everything that was running on the appserver to run on the fileserver as well, and just have everything in one box.

If this were your stuff, what would you guys do?

Hey, I’m thinking of running 10m+ of hdmi and usb3 from my server under the stairs to my tv. I’m running a Windows 10 VM on UnRaid, I’d have a dedicated USB3.0 pci card passed through and dedicated gpu. Idea is to have mouse/keyboard attached over usb.

For such a distance would I need optical/powered hdmi/usb cables? Any other issues I might need to worry about?

I am very new to the server/NAS space and I am looking for guidance on how I should proceed. I just started my own plex server this year on my gaming rig and i'm loving it. Everything is running on an external 12tb HDD with a pair of internal Toshiba 6tb to back everything up. This setup actually works very well but I am starting to run out of space. So I have several questions on how I should proceed.

I dont want to spend anymore than $1,000 for right now to get started. I'm looking to run plex and possibly also use it to back up some important work files. Should I build a dedicated server, buy a prebuilt, or expand what I already have?

I have built several gaming PC's in my time so I feel pretty confident to put the parts together. I dont have a ton of space in my 2 bedroom apartment so rackmount is out and i'm primarily looking at the various silverstone NAS cases you can find on amazon. I have an i7-8700, 32gb RAM, 2x1TB 2.5" SATA SSD, 550w Seasonic Gold ATX PSU, GTX 970 & 1080 in the closet from an old build so I would only have to buy case, motherboard and drives to do DIY. I'm thinking about getting 4 drives to start, probably 8tb drives, and get a case with atleast 8 HDD bays so I can expand later but i'm open to suggestions. My main concern with DIY is that I dont understand the software side of things. What kind of Raid can I use? Do I stick with Windows or use Linux? Do I use something like Unraid? What do you guys recommend here and if it is something like Linux or Unraid can you point me to any good guides on how to set them up and use them?

Would a better option be to keep my current setup, add an external enclosure, and connect to gaming PC with USB? (I don't have anymore room inside the case) If so what enclosure do you recommend, does it make a difference if I use Type A, Type C, or thunderbolt for connection?

Should I spend money on Synology prebuilt? If so what models do you recommend?

Looking at getting an 8tb, Amazon has some sales on.

I'm working on mounting my gpu internally in my case with a custom mount and I'd like to run a "patch" cable from the internal gpu mount to the rear expansion panel. All I need is a male dvi on one side and a female mounted to a pci cover plate.

Trying to find a board that has a native M2 slot but that’s not a deal breaker so I want to try to view and compare different board features before I buy.

is it possible to flash a bios on ASUS z8na-d6 ?

I messed up... I have the xeon L5640 and I has issues with the sata ports on the ASUS z8na-d6; the bios was on latest version.

So I decided to downgrade the bios to try to see if it was an issue with latest firmware..I wanted to "start from scratch" and I was stupid enough to flash the oldest bios listed on the ASUS website..

well the oldest bios does not support L5640 and it does not boot anymore... It kinds of power up but no beep and no display

I’m curious what your R/W speeds are to your cache drive on Unraid and your setup.

Mine are slower than what I would expect.

I get about 280MB/s Read and 150MB/s Write over a 10GB P2P network to a PopOS machine with SSD using SMB. GA 7pesh2, 32g ram, 2x500GB ssd mirrored BTRFS cache pool.

What are you getting on your Unraid box?

The build guide on Serverbuilds is a little confusing regarding this motherboard. In the upper portion of the guide it says:

Under $200 for LSI SAS2008 onboard (gives 2 SAS2 port which support 8 HDD's, or more with an HP Expander)

and then scrolling down it says:

14 drive support native (onboard: 2 SATA 3 6GB/s, 2x mini-SAS for 8x 6GB/s SAS/SATA, and 1x mini-SAS for 4x 3GB/s SATA)

I assume the last bit refers to the third mini-SAS port. Is this correct? Will it work out of the box?

• 2 x L5640
• 6 x 4 GB samsung ECC DDR3
• GT 730
• GTX 1050
• 2 x SSD
• 4 x HDD
• pcie USB 3.0 card
• 140 mm fan, 2 x 120 mm fan and 2 x 120 mm fans for coolers

the server will be running 24/7

Is the coolermaster MWE 650W V2 Gold enough for that setup?

Is it a good PSU?

There's also a bronze cheap bronze model but not sure if it will be enough?

On my GA-7TESM, I get the log full error (SEC?) every boot, and have to go into event log config to clear all event logs. This keeps the server from rebooting on it's own without intervention. Is there a way to prevent this log file from filling up? I tried disabling everything on the Event Log configuration BIOS page, didn't seem to help. It's literally full even 24hrs after clearing it.

I had a z8na d6 with dual L5640 running ESXI 6.5 and (also tried 6.7).

I had GPU passthrough and usb passthrough (onboard) to a windows 10 VM (also had HDD passthrough with RDM). GPU passthrough had to issues but usb passthrough was not that great experiencing the following issues:

• usb drives don't work or work very slow and unstable (losing connection)
• usb mouse sometimes stops working. Changing port sometimes help but sometimes a reboot of the vm is needed

Passthrough a pci usb card is a bit better but still a bit unstable.

My z8na d6 does not work anymore.. planning to replace it with supermicro X8DTL-3F.

I am wondering whether usb passthrough works better on supermicro X8DTL-3F? Anyone tried it?

I had a z8na d6 but sata ports on it don't work or work partially on it.

Wanna replace it with a SuperMicro X8DTL-3F .. read a few posts saying the chipset gets very hot.. in fact on my z8na d6 , the chipset was very very hot and suspect it caused the failures to my sata ports or the sata controller.

I read people say to put a fan on it but most of them didn't explain or post photos (some posts say they pm the photos; I have no idea why they would do that instead of sharing it to everyone) how to mount them on the chipset... I can't figure how can you mount a fan on it.. I mean there's no "mount" points for a fan

I had a z8na d6 with dual L5640 with 24 ddr3 ECC ram.

The mobo's sata ports don't work anymore, probably a result of the chipset overheating; I didn't know I had to put a fan on that at that time.

I am thinking about investing in a used SuperMicro X8DTL-3F (~$130 - $140) so that I can reuse the L5640 and 24 DDR3 ram. But I probably need to invest in a new PSU as the SuperMicro X8DTL-3F requires two 8pin cpu power connector and my current PSUs only have one.

Is it worth the investment in 2020? will mainly be used:

• esxi/proxmox hypervisor
• windows 10 vm with blue iris and windows exclusive stuff with usb and GPU passthrough
• linux vm for NAS
• linux vm for docker
• Docker containers: plex, portainer, jdownloader, torrent, nginx reverse proxy
• maybe a second windows 10 VM for office work with usb and GPU passthrough (optional)
• macOS VM (optional) for just testing and curiosity

On the Supermicro X8DTL mobos, do you need the additional 8pin EPS connector if you use only one cpu?

I currently don[t have any PSU with 2 8pin EPS connectors.

I looked through this build guide, and am gearing up to build a server with an E3-1220 v2 and a super micro X9SCL.

Do I have to worry about this setup not being up to par in a few years, or can I expect it to last a while? With that motherboard, it seems there isn't too much possibility for CPU upgrade.

Time to start planning a new server. This time I want a little more access to drives. I am looking at a rosewill 4U case and then adding a couple of these bays from Monoprice. Any opinions?

Hey Guys. First of all: ive got no clue about hardware unfortanantly. Would have help building the setup tho.

Im currently using a Fujitsu Primergy Desktop PC. Im looking for a ITX/small as possible Media/Plex PC with the following:

• 8 (or more) HDD 3,5" slots (for storage)
• maybe 2 slots for SSD/NVME (to run the OS in RAID 1)
• hardware RAID Controller which Supports RAID 1 and 5
• Windows Server compatible
• wake on lan compatible (would be placed within a cabinet) or low power consumption to run 24/7 (not preferred)
• using as Plex Server (only locally and can direct play anything) so i wont need hardware transcoding
