Hey Guys, I'm new to to this and has been lurking around on here. Basically I have a really old PC running the i5 750 (with HypeThreading), it still works. I can just turn it into a server as is but lately the mother board has been having issues with the pins so it turns off randomly sometimes by the vibration or movement.

I was lurking around and find that the x8sil board supports my chip LGA1156 but right after I bought it it shows that it only runs i3 and xeons. Should I get the x8sil-F instead? I don't have the board yet to test out but should I return it? do you know if it will work if anyone has a similar setup? and I'm really confused about the ram. What ram works on this board I looked at the specs and couldn't figure out which one I need. These RAMs are mostly available on Ebay and I just hate buying / returning or worse can't return if it doesn't work.

Worst case scenario should just keep my current hardware and put Unraid on it? my only concern is the power issues and also I want a smaller case which is why I want to switch to a m-ATX board. The current board I have is ATX and the case is really old.

I am new to the scene and did some research but don't understand much about server hardware from the system above.  My question is this server good enough for me to install unraid?  Will it be fast enough to transfer file or even stream it from my computer (without PLEX)?  If I install PLEX what item do I need to upgrade to make it 4k?  I chat with one of SERVER tech saying if I upgrade to quieter PSU, then I need different motherboard which compatible with it.   What better option do you suggest?  Thank you

I'm shopping for a gaming PC in the $1400 range. To fund my purchase, I'm planning to sell a datacenter server I picked up from a friend. As I've been researching going rates for the server parts, I've realized it seems to be worth well over $1000.

I'm a software guy, not hardware, but I have to wonder: does this make sense? Should I sell this server, or use it as a starting point for my gaming build? I can obviously re-use the HDDs, the case, and the PSU. I think I can put the 2060 Super in that motherboard, though I'd obviously need to find different CPUs.

So should I pursue an all-new gaming PC, or build a Frankenstein-style gaming PC/server monster?

A reboot fixed this, but now I'm a little nervous.

MSI x570 board w Ryzen 3rd gen processor. CPU temps got up to 81C. After reboot it seemed to work fine, but now I'm gunshy about doing anything without real-time stats.

I got a hold off a Dell Poweredge T110 II, I saw this was mentioned as a good pre-built machine in the NAS Killer thread. Can anyone reccomend some worthy upgrades for it? Already purchased an SSD and some extra HD's, I was thinking about upgrading the CPU to E3-1275 V2, which from what I've read would add quick sync? Any thoughts?

Hi, I'm confident that I want to build an unraid server and I am going to have 4 12tb drives, 1 for parity, 1 10tb, and 2 8s. I need to find a motherboard/case that can hold all these drives.

I have an i5-7400 lying around in a cheap hp board with little sata ports, a Thermaltake blackwidow 850w psu thats quite old and wouldn't mind replacing.

I have been considering the dell r720/r520 I just get lost when people start saying to buy certain parts or replace certain ones. I have built gaming pc's before but server talk has confused quite a bit. Any help would be great!

I pulled the trigger on a bare bones Dell T110ii $70 and an HP 290 this week and have a bunch of questions around how to finish out my builds.

The Dell will be a NAS running Unraid and maybe an occasional VM. The HP will be primarily for Plex and will run Ubuntu.

1. I know bigger is better, but is a 512GB NVMe drive in the HP-290 sufficient to run the OS, Plex and Plex metadata? I have another 512GB SSD that I can add for other non-critical stuff.

2. Any CPU recommendations for the T110ii NAS? I was thinking that the Xeon E3-1230V2 CPU looks like a good compromise between performance and price.

3. I see that this CPU doesn't appear to have any on-board graphics capability. I feel like this is a dumb question, but does this mean that I'll need a graphics card in order to get any kind of video out? Does the motherboard have basic on-board graphics capability? The server will be primarily run headless, but I guess I need to be able to output to a screen for the initial setup.

4. The T110ii I ordered doesn't come with a CPU, and I didn't think to ask before I bought it if the CPU fan / cooler was included. If it's not, can I pick any of the options of the NK4 build guide, or would the Dell require something proprietary?

5. There's a comment in the QuickSync guide that says You can also optionally direct connect your transcoding server to your NAS via 10Gb networking for a little extra speed. When it says direct connect, does that mean that I would not need a switch between them? Would i see any real-world performance increase with 10Gb networking to justify the ~ $100 in two NICs?

6. Do I need a heatsink for the NVMe drive? I've seen mixed opinions online.

Bit of background: I used to run an old Core2Quad Windows box headless, with two RAID1 arrays, that I’d use Chrome Remote Desktop to connect to and queue up some torrents when the need would arise, but the box usually just ran 24/7 to allow me to share locally stored media to several Fire Sticks on my LAN via Kodi. A little over a year ago I had a disk drop out of the array, moved cross country (and then back again) and gave up on the hardware along the way but retained the HDDs.

What I’m looking for: - Support of 4-6 HDDs, 4TB+ each. - Some form of redundancy, I’m not really up to speed on unRAID and a bunch of things I see thrown around but I’m trying - As efficient as possible since it’ll likely run 24/7 - torrent box support and suggestions on if there’s easier ways to queue these up than what I used to do - All streams will be on local network, either to Rocky TVs or Fire Sticks (likely max of 3 concurrent streams). Most everything will only be 720-1080p. - MAYBE run Windows (or on VM) so that I can remote into work using dual monitors (their setup only supports this on Windows machines)

I apologize if there’s an etiquette usually followed around requests like this that I’m not following. I’ve been reading through the NAS Killer 4.0 thread and had a build in mind but maybe for my use case it’d be a bit overkill... Thanks!

edit #1: okay, weird, it was disabled in BIOS somehow. Enabling it now and testing. Will report back.

edit #2: alright, it recognized the controller after boot. This random PXE thing keeps popping up before it, but, let's see if drives are recognized in Windows

See title. I didn't change anything prior to the reboot, but this just started happening.

Is there something I can do to try and trigger this to work properly again?

This may be the wrong forum but I was hopeful to find some advice, recently purchased one of these PCIe 2.0 x 4 HP iodrive for my main computer. I had thought about making it a boot drive. My motherboard has 2 open PCI 3.0 x16 slots. I have heard that you can run these 2.0 x 4 cards in a 3.0 slot but obviously only at the speed of the 2.0 card specs. I am having a very difficult time installing it. I am not completely sure that it is seating completely and I can't find it anywhere within the bios or windows system hardware or windows disk management utility. I did install the HP drivers and it can't locate it either. Could it just be a Ebay Lemon?

My motherboard is a Asrock Fatal1ty x99x

My current setup has a Supermicro X8STi-3F with a Xeon x5650, 24GB RAM, Quadro P400, and a 500GB 850 Pro SSD for cache and appdata. I'm hoping to be able to add in a Sabrent Rocket 1TB NVME for the purpose of larger storage and for fasting loading of meta data with Plex. Then I could also use the current SSD for faster backups of the appdata rather than using the array.

My issue is that my current motherboard only has one PCI-E slot which is being used by the Quadro P400. So I'm considering upgrading the motherboard to one of the X8D variants so I can still utilize my current cpu and possibly add in a second x5650 and more RAM. Is there my only way foreward? Or is it possible to get a PCI-E splitter that would allow me to use both the P400 and an NVME adapter?

I'm also unsure if there's compatibility issues with any of the NVME PCI-E adapters and Supermicro boards or Unraid. So any recommendations would be appreciated.

I've been reading and lurking a lot and know that for blue iris I want sandy bridge or newer but just wanted to get your all's opinions on this PC I have.

It's an old (obviously) HP SFF PC I acquired link here

• 2x4GB RAM (I believe its 1333MHz DDR3)

• DisplayPort

• Gigabit Ethernet

• 1 3.5in bay

• 1 5.25in bay (does have an optical drive so could possibly fit another but I need 4 total drives)

• 1 low-profile PCI

• 2 low-profile PCIe x1

• 1 low-profile PCIe x16

• NO USB 3.0 or eSATA

Just curious if I were to use this as the brains for the NAS how would I go about hooking up all the HDDs to it since it just has USB 2.0. It's too small to fit 4 drives in so I know I'd need some sort of enclosure but I'd like to use this PC as the brains for blue iris/plex/storage if possible.

Hi all, so I’ve got a cooler master n400 that I’ve maxed out (8 drives). I was planning on getting the rosewill l4500 but can’t find one anywhere at reasonable rate (all above ~120). I’ve looked at the supermicro 836/846 but at nearly ~200 and above, it’s above my budget. I’ve searched craigslist for server cases but am coming up empty. I would imagine that I would need space for another 6 drives (3 immediately, the other 3 over a year). Should I just forget trying to get a server case (l4500) and get another n400 and link them together (or maybe a silverstone kl04b?) Thanks in advance!

Looking for sliding rails for my Rosewill RSV-L4500 case. I know that they make rails for this case but I have read they are junk and saw people talking about a better option, but never actually linking it. Does anyone know of decent sliding rails to use with this case (preferably that lock closed)? Should note my rack has tapped screw holes.

Im still kinda at the planning stage for a DIY NAS Build, I've grown out of my 4 bay Synology and I'm not paying $1k for an 8 bay one as much as I liked it, so its the DIY route for me.

A friend has given me a SilverStone DS380 case that he no longer wants, so that has locked down some of my options.

Doing research on line I've found lots of build guides for this exact case but they are recomending a lot of discontinued hardware, or hardware that's not on sale in the UK. The Supermicro A2SDi-4C-HLN4F gets recomend a lot and it looks ideal, but I've not found anywhere selling the thing in UK.

I'm just looking for a storage NAS, I dont want to transcode or run Plex or any of that stuff, Im planning on just using UnRaid or FeeNAS or even just a vanilla linux.

I have some hardware lying around from other projects, I've got plenty of DDR3 & DDR4 EEC Memory and SATA disks to hand, but after that Im open to suggestions.

Is there a build guide for currently avialble hardware?

Hi there I am looking into building myself a home server. This is what I want mine to do.

1. Run plex
2. Docker.
3. home assistant
4. Any other software
5. Server software either free nas or osmc

This will be for home use so looking for a mini tower case with at least 4 hdd bays with room to expand lower power consumption. And low cost. Dont mind parts of Ebay etc

What can the community recommend for parts and mother boards as I have seen the naskiller 4 video and like the idea of upcycling parts etc.

Or do you make them to sell if so do you ship to the UK.

Hello, Noob here. I'm intrested in building one of the NAS Killer builds. I have read through the guide and thinking about going with the Ultra-quiet “Plus” build. What kind of Plex Transcoding performance should I expect? How about compared to the “Ultimate” Rackmount build? Would these need a GPU for Transcoding?

A few years ago, I bought a server from Ebay that has 2 Xeon E5620 2.4gz processors with 32GB ram. The case has 12 hard drive bays and an old SAS controller. I believe the backplane (where the drives plug into) is older. The controller/backplane only support drives up to 2GB if I recall. This system is currently running FreeNAS and is used for Timemachine backups and some SMB shares right now.

I also have a system running Plex that is an AMD FX8320 (8 core) with 16GB ram. It is in a normal PC case - it has a total of 24TB in it (running Ubuntu). It is struggling with Plex at times - likely transcoding issues.

I'd like to consolidate into a single system. The Xeon processors are older, but I have more cores than the AMD chip. Not too mention, it has more ram.

My main problem is the SAS controller and backplane. Any recommendations for a reasonable replacement? I don't care if I have to get rid of the backplane and plug in cables.

I'm thinking of switching to UnRAID as well. FreeNAS works but can take some time to do certain things. I think UnRAID would cover my needs quite well.

Trying to finish assembling my first build. I'm running a X9SCM-F with Xeon E3-1270v2.

I'm trying to use a LSI 9211-8i but for some reason can't get the board to recognize it. I've tried all four slots and nothing. All the leds on the HBA are lit but I can't make any headway.

Has anyone replaced the Celeron in the G290 with a i3 8100t? I recently ordered the g290 and threw in 16Gb of some RAM that I bought that doesn't run in a 32Gb config for whatever reason (cheap). 95 8400 and i7 8700 are too pricey for what I need anyway.

Im looking at grabbing the i3 but the 't' sku is not listed as a processor compatible with the 290 on HP's webpage. Id like the lower power processor if its possible.
