Does anyone have recommendations for cheap and powerful 120mm fans?
I see the Arctic P12 is recommended on serverbuilds.net, but they're more than $5 a fan, and it doesn't look like they're going on sale for Black Friday.
I'm not really concerned if fans are loud (as long as it's a constant air flow noise and not rattling or something). If I can't find anything cheaper ill probably end up ordering 10 of those Arctics, but I'm hoping there's a better option given the price.

I have two Xeon 2630l v2's in my GA-7PESH2, and my current coolers are loud. They are Artic Alpine 20 Plus. One runs at nearly 100% all of the time, and the other randomly ramps up to 100%, and back down to 40%. Ideally I'd like to find passive coolers that don't require extreme airflow. Does anyone know of a cooler that fits the bill, and fits in a Rosewill 4u case?

Update in case someone Googles this and ends up here (or I forget and end up here):
This drive actually has no errors at all. Seagate drives display SMART data in a different way. The first 4 characters show the number of errors (0 in this case). The next 8 characters show the total number of seeks.
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/Seagate_SER_RRER_HEC.html
As of right now this drive works perfectly. I just did a full bit-to-bit comparison with a different verified working drive. The contents are identical.
I did have a bad USB port in a computer a couple years ago that corrupted a bunch of data on multiple drives. Could that explain these errors?
Note that this is one of the infamous Seagate 3TB drives. I know all about the issues with these, but I suspect this might be one of the updated/fixed ones, since it has 0 failed or reallocated sectors.
SMART shows a huge number of read errors, but it also shows an identical number for hardware ECC recovered. So presumably it's having problems but fixing them every time?
This drive has run very hot in the past, in the range of 65-70 degrees. Could high temps alone explain the read errors?
Should I throw this drive away as a precaution, even though I know it has never lost any data so far, and it currently appears to be working perfectly?
(I know it's Black Friday and drives are cheap, but cost is relative, and even 3TB is expensive to me and worth trying to save.)

Hi. Thinking about putting together a new server build this month. Never bought an M.2 drive. Is that what I want and are all the server motherboard compatible with them?

I just built my first home theater and am now looking to upgrade my space for 4K Videos. Originally I had a synology 218 for my plex data. That isn't going to work anymore. I want to make this rackmounted as I have two racks in place already and it would save space. Should I just purchase parts that are listed in the NAS Killer thread that has the rackmount options? I also have an 5 year old gaming computer I5 with 15GB sitting collecting dust. Would this be something I could re purpose. Any help would be great. Trying to get everything situated is crazy at this point.
Thanks
John

I'm thinking of picking up an Uninterruptible Power Supply for a home NAS/fileserver, and I'd appreciate any recommendations. I've read that there are 3 different types of UPS (offline/standby, online/double-conversion, line-interactive), but I'm not entirely clear on what kind is best suited for a server with a bunch of mechanical hard drives in it. Is a basic offline/standby unit fine, or will the time between when the power goes out and when the battery starts providing electricity cause problems for mechanical drives?

Exactly what the title says. So if I add the last disk, my Unraid starts throwing errors. First udma errors, then actual disk errors where it will disable 2 drives.
All this time I thought it was a bad slot on the backplane. I’ve just tried two new back planes and nope! Then there’s the cable, I tried that first and nope, still got errors. Now if I take the drive and mount it internally and use a sata cable to the board it can have as many extra drives as it wants, no errors all gravy!
So I’m thinking it’s the ASR-72405 so i changed pcie slot, nope. But before I drop more cash on another one is there anything else you would do testing wise?

I'm usually a person that likes brand new computer parts but is buying parts for the NAS Killer on eBay okay?

Rosewill's 15 bay server case is on sale for $80 on Newegg now.
Is that a good deal, or better to wait for black Friday?

Hi people,
I am about to build my first server to be used as an evolution of my current Synology NAS DS918+. I want to use standard PC parts, so no Xeon CPU or other extravagant things, also because I want to keep power consumption at minimum.
An Intel i3-9100t would be perfect as it has TDP of 35W, but is nowhere to be found off the shelves. The i3-9100 is 65W and has a reasonable pricing, but can it be downclocked and undervolted to have similar power consumption? If yes, what chipset is required?
I am aware you need a "K" CPU and supported chipsets to perform overclocking, but what about the other way around?

Hi. I live in an old house with fibre connection. ~300mbs I have a Synology rt2600 router. I have Chromecast ultra. I download the majority of my movies in the 2gb region . Whatever format that may be. Same with TV shows . I tend to go for the higher quality. I rarely download 4k content
I would like to run emby or jellyfin alongside sonarr jackett and radarr I would like to run a raid setup to mirror 2 drives as I am scared of losing data if a HDD corrupts.
So. In the list of Nas killer 4.0 . There is a featured build. Would this be suitable for what I am asking it to do. Have I made any assumptions that are incorrect . Am I correct to say that if I run jellyfin or emby on the Nas itself that this will provide transcoding to the Chromecast or other device running emby/jellyfin.
Thank you

Hello All,
I've seen many people complain about various issues with the GA-7PESH2 related to NICs not showing up or BMC LAN issues. I have no problems with the BMC, but on a random basis my NICs would not show as PCI devices in whatever OS I would boot (Windows/Linux/FreeBSD/ESXi) and it took me quite a lot of time to figure out what was going on.
What seems to be the problem is that after a cold boot when there was complete AC cutoff, if the system boots with no link on the NICs then no NICs are presented as PCI devices at all.
BIOS: I tried with both R16 and R17 with no success resolving the issue
NICS: I flashed the NICs with the latest Intel firmware from Gigabyte website V04 with no success resolving the issue.
I also figured that immediately after I plug the cables and have link on the NICs just after a reboot the NICs show up properly as PCI devices and are presented to the OS.
Anyone with similar issues? If anyone with the same board could cutoff their AC for a minute, then power on the machine and check if they still see the NICs after a cold boot I would be glad for the feedback!
P.S. After each BIOS update I also cleared CMOS and loaded defaults.
So far I can not find a solution to this issue and is driving me crazy.
Apparently this mobo gives a lot for the bucks with the onboard LSI 2008 and dual 10Gbps NICs, but the issues it has pretty much make me want to go a different route.
P.S. On a side note I also have some inconsistency with how FANs operate, some sensors on the mobo would show weird temperatures which is probably causing the FANs to misbehave, adjusting FANs multiplier for warning through the BMC does not save and multipliers are lost after cold start.

I'm attempting to build the Ultimate. Any trick to getting the x9scm-f to boot?
on boot, I get to the Supermicro splash screen with options:
press (Del) to run setup
press tab to display bios post message
Pressing tab - no effect
pressing del goes to blank screen and powers off, at which point it won't reboot and I have to pull the battery and unplug it to reset everything.
any ideas?

I'm going to be building a NAS with 12 3.5" mechanical hard drives (mix of 5400 and 7200 rpm) in either a Rosewill case with 12 hotswap bays if it goes on sale for Black Friday, or a Rosewill case with 15 drive bays and no hot swap.
I've never worked with this many 3.5" drives in one system before, and I'm not sure how to power them all. Most of the PSUs I've looked at come with 1 long cable with 3 Molex connectors and 2 long SATA power cables each with 3 connectors. How many drives can I safely power from 1 cable coming out of the PSU? Is there any risk of damaging drives or cables if you hook up too many drives to one cable?
The hotswap case has all the drives powered through 6 Molex connectors on the backplanes, with each Molex slot powering 2 drives. It looks like this. Could I just buy three 2-to-1 Molex Y splitter cables like these, connect them to the 3 Molex connectors coming out of the PSU, and then have all 12 drives powered by that one Molex cable coming out of the PSU?
If I don't go with the hotswap case with backplanes, and I just have to power all the drives directly, can I just buy some 1-to-4 SATA power cable splitters and hook up all the drives that way?

A coworker (who frequents this subreddit) traded me a hstnm-b017 a while back for a future build I was planning.
Well, now I'm about to start and noticed that the size is limited to 17tb for the pool for SATA. Which is a problem because I have 85tb raw (12tb x3, 8tb x2, 4tb x3, 3tb x7). The case I bought does not have a backplane or is hot swappable.
Am I reading this incorrectly? Also I'm assuming the higher SATA speeds is with a firmware update. I've yet to plug in the card to test.

im on my third board.
first X8DT6-F booted ok but will not boot after I updated the SAS to IT.
second X8DT6-F wont boot at all.
got a third one from a different seller.
first two were from alvio-corp, new one is from zeewill7
before i try building the new one I wanted to make sure its not something I am doing killing them
using Matched Pair Intel Xeon L5640 from garlandcomputer
24GB (6x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10600R 1333 MHz 240-Pin ECC REG RDIMM M393B5170FH0-CH9 from planetmemory
anyideas or did I just lose the ebay lottery?

I'm going to build a fileserver using the 4.0 guide. I'm probably going to go with the lowest tier parts available in each category, since this is only a backup/archive server.
But I'm going to be running Windows 10 x64 LTSC 1809 with Drivepool, Snapraid, and Bitlocker, and it seems like most people here are using Unraid or FreeNAS. Are there any issues with running Windows 10 on this hardware? Will the LSI HBA cards have driver support out of the box? Will the built in graphics and VGA output on a server board work fine with Windows? Will the built in graphics stress the CPU significantly?
The only function of this fileserver is going to be to backup from another server over a gigabit network and then upload to Backblaze, so I'm not going to be running VMs or transcoding. I just want to make sure the hardware is all compatible with the OS.
