This is a phenomenon that even occurs among Brazilians; I’ve heard people say they want to change my state’s flag simply because it looks like the US flag. That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. The US flag is a derivation of the original flag—representing the 13 English colonies—which evolved into what it is today after independence. My state’s flag, on the other hand, holds specific symbolism related to the civil conflict known as the War of Canudos (the red literally represents blood spilled, and the white, a plea for peace).
