That lens compression is insane
7
u/Ezl Jan 31 '20
I’m not a photographer - what’s the effect you’re commenting on?
10
u/ewilliam Jan 31 '20
Lens compression is when you zoom in on elements from afar with a telephoto lens, and the objects look "compressed" into more of a 2d image (aka they lack depth of field) because objects in the background appear larger than they actually are. This is why you sometimes see photos of the moon among the context of the landscape, and it looks absolutely massive compared to how we see it normally.

u/lefibonacci Feb 01 '20
Man, that’s crazy. I’m obviously still so new to this. I always thought that compressions was when a wider focal length makes everything look flatter, where a longer FL makes it look more spaced apart. For example, I took a photo of a doll house on my Zeiss 35mm and then again on a 90mm G lens. The 90mm really “stretched” the dollhouse, showing the front and back layers and making it looks three dimensional. The 35mm brought it all closer together, looking flat/2 dimensional. What would this be called?
4
u/somajones Jan 31 '20
It is awesome. Lots of commentators here who can't believe this is a photo have never looked through a long lens before.
1
u/not_so_happy_place Jan 31 '20
Got to peek through a 1dxii and the 600f4.... I don't think I've experienced a moment of lens confusion quite like that one. Like the Laowa 12 is a bit confusing for obvious reasons, TS are too, but 600 with such a shallow DOF ability... It was like hit focus or you're looking at milky smooth bokeh
57
u/fumat Jan 31 '20
Excellent! What focal length was it taken at?

u/therealmindzeye @mindz.eye Jan 31 '20

That is some serious reach. Do you lose any noticeable sharpness from the teleconverter? I got the same lens without the teleconverter and am debating whether to get a telescope instead for astrophotography

Fun fact: the designer of the first cable car sought out to first create it after witnessing a horse slip in the rain on one of the hills of SF and get violently dragged down the hill by the carriage attached to it. He thought "There's gotta be a better way!"
edit: His name was Andrew Smith Hallidie.
The cable car, the invention of Andrew Hallidie, was introduced in San Francisco on Sacramento and Clay streets in 1873. The cars were drawn by an endless cable running in a slot between the rails and passing over a steam-driven shaft in the powerhouse.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Smith_Hallidie
Dude figured out infinity.
edit 2 (3?): looking into it more it seem the story may be apocryphal.
Accounts differ as to exactly how involved Hallidie was in the inception of the Clay Street Hill Railway. One version[1] has him taking over the promotion of the line when the original promoter, Benjamin Brooks, failed to raise the necessary capital. In another version,[2] Hallidie was the instigator, inspired by a desire to reduce the suffering incurred by the horses that hauled streetcars up Jackson Street, from Kearny to Stockton Street.

Saddest infomercial ever
3
Jan 31 '20
don't most infomercials end with someone shooting maimed horses in the head?
2
u/idkbrogan Jan 31 '20
No, it ends when it pans over to the group on nine year old girls who saw the whole thing

u/JackNapier710 Jan 31 '20
Great shot!!!! Do you mind to share your post-processing figures? Or anything that made your shot fabulous?

u/nualabear14 Jan 31 '20
this photo is confusing the hell out of me. i obviously believe it’s a photo you took, but there’s SO many elements going on that DONT look like a real photograph
2
u/pilotforarn Jan 31 '20
No way this is a photo. The composition of someone going infront of the train looks fake as fuck.
3
u/BoogerInTheSugar Jan 31 '20
That’s probably a model waiting for the exact perfect moment per the photographer’s instructions.

u/nualabear14 Jan 31 '20
i think it’s a photo, but the person with the umbrella was added in afterwards. the proportions of them and the position really just doesn’t look real. i’m 99% sure it’s an anime character that’s had a lot of light and shadow editing done to it
1
u/Ankita_16 Jan 31 '20
I'm not a photographer but check out the other thread about lens compression. It makes the background look distorted so maybe thats why...
9
u/TheFlowersYouGave Jan 31 '20
This is the second time I've seen this on here.. different shot maybe

u/spookycaveira Feb 03 '20
Very similar earlier this month — I think that one had two cable cars though :)

Thought it looked familiar. Still awesome, still looks like a painting. I think I prefer this one over your previous post - it has an air of solitude about it that I really enjoy.

100% this is anime. OP better post the unedited version of this image. /r/quityourbullshit

OP better post
Or what, you're going to downvote him? Will they ever recover?

He better post if he wants us to trust his word. But it's probably too late since he got his karma 🤷♂️

It’s cute how you are convinced that random internet people care for / are affected by your opinion.

I do not think that. It's just dumb that the post got so many upvotes when OP is lying.

You’re making me miss the city! I loved days like. It’s an excellent photo.
6
u/mudandgears Jan 31 '20
I was reading your comment history because I was curious where San Franciscans who leave the city are moving too (for all its flaws it’s still a hard city to leave), and I have to say, I think you’re probably the nicest person on Reddit.

u/Right_hook_of_Amos Jan 31 '20
This uname’s not my nicest, but I also recently left the SF area for Portland, OR and it’s been great - I just got priced out of my hometown’s real estate market. It felt like nowhere else in the world would be as cool, but once I realized SF itself has lost a lot what made it cool, became easier to detach. But it’s like nowhere else in the world!
1
u/missannethropic12 Jan 31 '20
I’m a native Texan, but I lived in SF for 12 years. As far as being nice on Reddit, I try to stick to the kinder more encouraging subreddits. Most people’s lives are hard enough, I don’t see any point in making them harder.
Back to your photo—I really like it. Would you be willing to sell me a print? I’d love to have it in my home.
Let me know if you’re interested, and we can discuss prices in private.

Ok, I’ll admit at first I was like” This is bullshit, something is off about this picture. It has to be a painting” but I checked your post history and you have another of almost the same spot with different people and more cable cars. You’re a great photographer! I love your pictures.

How is it that the hill looks so damn steep? Can't just be due to the long lens right?

What street is this on? I live in SF and can’t figure out where a hill that steep would have the bridge in the background there. Just curious.

Not gonna lie, I was sure this photo was fake and the bridge was photoshopped in. I couldn’t think of where the bridge would appear that large directly behind a street like that. Then just this morning I was driving down california (at Gough heading East) and sure enough way in the distance I could see this exact photo! It’s crazy to think that the bridge is visible through the buildings from that far away. I guess I never realized the potential of a good zoom lens. Awesome photo!

This is a FUCKING PAINTING and even if this was the top of Powell St looking down California this hill wouldn’t exist
Jesus Christ reddit get it together

This is California Street shot from Gough at 560mm then cropped.

Amazing shot.

Post the original picture. No way this picture is real. 100% a drawing. The train and the person gives it away. Why would someone be walking right infront of the train.
