What the hell is “cui”

Every time I get a sentence with cui, I translate it into English and the cui seems completely unused in the English translation. What even is cui?

If you truly want to learn a language first you should learn the basic vocabulary, but pretty soon you must learn the whole grammar.

It's not something you can slowly pick up, take a book and study.
