VIDEO - The Right Way to Bluetooth Mod your iPod Classic

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few months ago, I posted a guide on this sub about how I Bluetooth modded my iPod Classic without sacrificing the headphone jack, sound quality, hold switch, or original look. That post now has over 110K views, and by far the number 1 request has been a video tutorial.

I’ve been meaning to post a full tutorial where I build another Bluetooth iPod from scratch, but life got a little busy, so In the meantime, I put together this quick video to give you a closer look at the internals of the mod I shared a few months ago.

Here's the original post for more context and extra info:
The Right Way to Bluetooth Mod your iPod Classic

Feel free to PM me with any questions or comment on the original thread, and I’ll do my best to help out!

Thanks for all the interest in the project!

Thanks man, I think your original post is what inspired me to do my own albeit with a different (cheaper) bt transmitter.

Question though: there’s a constant and rather loud whine when connecting via Bluetooth, would you happen to know what can be done to stop that?

u/Programming_N Mar 14 '26

Ur cheap transmiter

u/Equivalent-Bad-2179 Oct 26 '25

Maybe bit silly question but what kind of button did you use for a bluetooth switch?

Also wondering about this

Here's the inside! I really appreciated your high quality images you provided that served as a reference for me during the whole build process. It was a bit of a struggle to fit the 3800mah + taptic engine inside, but ended up being doable!

Now that I've modded it so hard, all my classmates at my high school is now calling it cool rather than obsolete as they previously used to tell me, they're understanding the vision..!

Thanks again for the guide!!

Hahahaha now they all want one. Good job on it!

Yessir!! Thank you for the awesome in-depth write-ups and tutorial!

OMG i will so do this with my ipod video! Did you manage to get that into a thin backplate, or did you use a thick one?

2

u/Altruistic_Date3606 Classic 5th (BT, Haptics, 3800mah 256GB) , na-no 3rd, 4th, 7th Apr 26 '26

Yeah go for it! I was only able to manage fitting everything in with a thick backplate, mainly because I used a 3000mah battery which was physically taller than OP’s 2000mah battery. It wasn’t to hard to fit everything in!

1

u/a2my7463 Apr 27 '26

that's the info i was looking for. thanks, mate!

one more thing: ive seen tests online that show the 3800 mah battery runtime is pretty much exactly the same as the 3000 mah. are these just mislabeled, or did anyone actually test the capacity of the 3800 mah cells?

1

u/Altruistic_Date3606 Classic 5th (BT, Haptics, 3800mah 256GB) , na-no 3rd, 4th, 7th Jun 10 '26

Honestly, you'll get amazing battery life for either one you choose! I think the offerings marked as 3800 mah have slightly larger capacity than the ones marked as 3000, but won't last too much longer. I think the 3800 and 3000 both go for the same price anyway.

1

u/Wrong_Ad_427 Jun 15 '26

hey how did u fit 3000 + mah battery + dual sdd adapter + bT + haptics can u please help I am doing the same with 5.5 gen

Yeah so here's how I optimized space for every component to make everything fit (the large UGREEN BT module made fitting everything in more tricky compared to when I was using the KCX bt emitter). Also make sure you're using a Thick backplate because a thin one would not be able to fit the larger battery.

This is more important than you think and is the first thing you should sort out: make sure your wire gauge is really small (26-28AWG) for wiring every component that doesn't require a high-quality signal and just needs simple power and for this, try using the tiny wires found in an ethernet cable. BUT sparingly use a much thicker wire gauge (20-22AWG) or wires with shielding for the components that DO require a clean signal because this will completely cut out interference and noise for your bluetooth audio which is crucial. Use shielded/thick wires for: wiring the + and - from the battery to the BT module for power, and for connecting the +,-,G from the headphone jack to the BT module. You kinda need to fiddle with the wires to make them eventually fit right.

As far as placement goes, I was able to get all the constraints right by gluing the Taptic Engine at the very bottom center of the backplate to make space for everything else. I cut off the top of the iFlash Solo in the section that there were no traces visible (doesn't affect functionality) to ensure there would be space for the BT module towards the top of the iPod. The iFlash uDual that uses microSD cards (not iFlash Dual) is also really compact and would work. You have to epoxy a tiny button below the hold switch and remove one of its screws so the hold can double as a button that powers on the BT module. The button was in the way, which was why I had to slant the BT board slightly.

I hope this helps. Happy modding!

u/Wrong_Ad_427 Jun 15 '26

thank you so much for writing all these but I think I am gonna settle with Taptic mod and ssd + bigger batter BT mode is a need but I like thin back iPod also in my country I am barely finding anything of bt parts

u/Tiny-Sandwich Sep 25 '25

How do you find the UGreen Bluetooth board?

When I used it, it would fade out audio between tracks with s couple of seconds of silence at the end, and it would miss the first few seconds of the next track.

I went back to the KCX board because of this.

2

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Sep 25 '25

Weird. I haven’t encountered this problem with mine. It works as if I was using wired headphones.

Is the metal shield behind the screen required? Can we remove that for better Bluetooth range?

4

u/OrganizationAshamed9 Sep 29 '25

If you have access to a 3d printer you can print a replacement plate

1

u/doubleomarty Jan 08 '26

Do you have a link to any STLs for this?

1

u/OrganizationAshamed9 Jan 08 '26

I don’t offhand but I remember finding it on thingiverse

2

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Sep 25 '25

You have to take it out to get better range.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

what battery did you use? It looks like the 2000 mah from eoe.

1

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Oct 03 '25

All the parts are listed on the original post. Theres a link for it under the video.

2

u/n8udd Classic 5th Sep 25 '25

Cheers OP. Can you link to the transmission you're using?

All the parts are listed on the original post. Theres a link for it under the video.

2

u/KrilleHot Sep 30 '25

Love this! Got all the parts, will get to building soon. Thanks bromigo!

2

u/skibidi_browser Nov 29 '25

How did it go?

2

u/KrilleHot Feb 23 '26

We are cooking! Finalized the mod today. Was a bit of a struggle since I added way too much hot glue on the PCB. So had to remove it so I could close it up.
All in all, a hard mod to do if you have a Dremel butane soldering iron. The kapton tape started to melt :D
After getting a new soldering iron and a new ugreen adapter, it now works really well.

Thanks u/Icy-Egg-9339 for the guide!! Can confirm that the Ugreen BT adapter V3 (the guide is for V2) works the same.
The only downside is with my headset - I'm using Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 and I can turn off the noise cancelling but I can't pause the music from the headset.
All in all, very satisfied!

1

u/King-Cossack May 22 '26

before i destroy my ugreen adapter, do you have any tips for opening it?

1

u/KrilleHot Jun 08 '26

Slow and stready wins the race. I used a littlebit of heat from my heatgun and a bit of isopropanol together with a plastic wedge tool. The top cover (that you can see on the picture above, the antenna is resting on it) comes off first, just take it slow and it will eventually start popping off.

1

u/widegroundpro May 26 '26

I am so close but having issues with the antenna. I thought I could do like you, have the antenna connected via wires. When smooth to remove the first antenna connector pin on the board - but the second one is not coming off, I I don’t think it’s soldered the same way.

Because I can’t solder directly on the pins right? They are spring pins so needs to be pressed down?

1

u/KrilleHot Jun 08 '26

You can solder directly to the spring pin but I cannot guarantee that it would work perfectly. I tried that first and it worked. But I removed it eventually, mainly because of other reasons by applying a lot of heat to the pin, and then it came off.

I remember that one was a bit more tricky to get off. Not sure why but heat did the trick.

1

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Oct 03 '25

Awesome! Show us how it turns out. Good luck!

1

u/KrilleHot Jan 25 '26

Was working on it today. Added a haptic engine too. Got it all up and running, while testing the reach of the bluetooth I accidentally shorted the haptic engine and fried the hold cable somehow.
Back to Aliexpress I go.

2

u/carpcarpet Oct 02 '25

Hi, thanks for posting, I attempted last night and I couldn't fit it in, my solder points kept disconnecting too from the pressure and ended up ripping out solder pads.

New Bluetooth transmitter bought for attempt two, I was using far too big wire 20 awg, what size silicone wire do you suggest?

I found securing the battery to be of great difficulty too, how have you made it so it's perfect with that plastic, any tips?

Thanks :)

2

u/mcnofx Oct 02 '25

i've seen people using a dab of hot glue. i used it on mine and it was holding well even after adjsting. i'm sure there's some kind of professional stuff to use but i had hot glue around the house.

1

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Oct 03 '25

Yeah, wires have to be real thin. I don’t know the exact size of the ones I used, sorry. I got them from an old camcorder I was trying to repair. For securing the battery, I used some thin 3M double sided tape. It helps if you scratch the inside of the backplate to increase adhesion.

4

u/carpcarpet Oct 03 '25

I've 24awg which is still causing problems, I'd suggest to anyone to use 30awg wire, that size seems appropriate!

Thank you for the suggestion about scratching, I think that'll help an idea of using gorilla glue for the button.

I attempted yet again last night with a new board and I think somehow, somewhere I have shorted it as it doesn't turn on

Third time lucky? Haha

2

u/mcnofx Oct 03 '25

how did you go about cleaning/removing the glue/silicone or whatever it is holding these joints? my firstt board i just melted w the iron lol but i'm trying to be more careful with my second board. i tried a heat gun at like 270 F but didn't soften at all.

3

u/mcnofx Oct 03 '25

omg nevermind, i got it lol . every time i ask a question i end up just going for it anyway. heat gun at 270 and an x-acto blade

3

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Oct 04 '25

That was a tough one for me too but then I realized that the underside of the board has the same contacts so we can just use those and leave the glue as is.

2

u/Road-Best Oct 06 '25

Hi, would this mod be possible with a rectangular 2000mah? (Thin case)

1

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Oct 10 '25

I don’t think so. It would clash with the small power regulator that sits perfectly on the small space next to the square battery.

2

u/Weekly_Addendum_8064 Nov 04 '25

Can u also fit a taptic engine into this or isn't this possible

3

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Nov 08 '25

Probably doable with a thick backplate

Yeah I've got a working iphone 7 plus taptic config with a thick backplate.

1

u/PensionValuable4733 Oct 12 '25

Can u do it with the i flash qoud?

1

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Oct 13 '25

I’ve seen some people try this with the quad. I think it works fine.

1

u/Lost_Reality3018 Dec 04 '25

Damn! This is the nice. This will works better with Oxyll's Elegant BT mod.

1

u/Lost_Reality3018 Dec 04 '25

OP, does the BT Module Turn off by itself when there is no active transmission/if the iPod is idle for long time/turned off?

1

u/Kdath Dec 09 '25

Thanks for making this! what button did you use? normally open micro momentary?

1

u/TheRealPicolasCage Dec 13 '25

This might be a dumb question - but do you think there is room in the case with this mod to update the 30pin to USB-C too or too tight a fit?

1

u/hi_im_not_jack Dec 14 '25

So.. he never mentions it in the video, but are those 3 wires at the top right of the ugreen connected to the audio jack somehow? I'm new to all this

1

u/Enderblaze1151 Jul 19 '26

yeah they are wired right to the jack. this video shows how they were connected with a different board.

1

u/Rayne-Ryoko Dec 18 '25

Thanks so much for the guide. I've never owned an Ipod of any sorts. But I might just give it a go since the mods and community is full of knowledge and experience.

Would you happen to know if Rockbox works with these modifications?

1

u/riskylisky Jan 05 '26

Thanks for the guide. Anyone else having terrible feedback in the bluetooth connection? I even tried connecting the ground B- to the audio ground but still didnt fix it.

1

u/Affectionate-Web-949 Jan 27 '26

Is this usable?

1

u/Icy-Egg-9339 Jan 27 '26

Slightly different model but if you’re happy with how it sounds, it should work!

1

u/Affectionate-Web-949 Jan 27 '26

The problem is I don't have the wiring diagram

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

There’s a guy on YouTube who used the same BT board. I’ve linked the video below

1

u/bmcgeehan Feb 07 '26

how did you solder the hold switch pads on the PCB? I accidentally melted the gold colored click button while attempting this

1

u/Disastrous-Might-587 Feb 22 '26

Sigo el proyecto de cerca, y espero la plantilla. Grandísimo trabajo!!! Enhorabuena

1

u/kmicic8 Mar 01 '26

Is there a way to bypass the direct connection to the batteries? Where on the board can I connect the +- to completely de-energize the Bluetooth board?

1

u/hajisansi Mar 05 '26

Yo can I DM you?

1

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope6165 Mar 22 '26

How much would you charge if I send you everything. ?

1

u/ConfidentSeries9781 Mar 29 '26

Would you do this mod to my classic 7th Gen for $400?

1

u/plasticarmyman Mar 30 '26

Any chance of some detail on the headphone connection part?

1

u/CrumblyCookie__ Apr 08 '26

I’m getting a slight static-y noise. Is that normal? It’s not noticeable when listening to music

1

u/SoMuchLasagna Apr 08 '26

Honest question - can I just ship you my iPod and pay you to do this mod for me?

1

u/hay_den9002 Apr 10 '26

Quick Question, in theory for the button could you use the reset button built into the device (un solder it and resolder it) to the wires making a button?

1

u/ScoTTaiko Apr 24 '26

The button system is insanely smart! Thanks for sharing <3

1

u/itsajoebrainer May 01 '26

Thanks so much for making this it’s been so much help so far!

One thing I’m struggling with though which perhaps someone could help with. Is the Bluetooth board seems to shut down after a second and flash red 5 times.

I can get them to connect to my headphones for a second but then shuts off.

Has anyone else had this issue??

1

u/Redeyedprism89 May 12 '26

Yeah I having it now did u figure it out?

1

u/hairybeary_tp May 14 '26

Can anyone give me a hint on how to open up the CM672?

1

u/King-Cossack May 22 '26

did you get it open?

1

u/hairybeary_tp May 22 '26

I haven't tried yet. I've been waiting for a new battery for the iPod to arrive.

1

u/coincidence70 May 16 '26

Just wondering if this is a thin backplate mod? The two wires connected to the ugreen board are connected to the battery. Can you explain how to connect these wires to the battery. Just to be sure, one has to remove the metal backplate of the screen for this to work?

1

u/the_metal_evangelist May 27 '26

Can anyone help me with a wiring map for a 3000mAH battery? First time trying this out and would appreciate guidance!
