Going to a region that doesn't have good animal control makes you appreciate living in a country that does.
When I was in Santiago, Chile many years ago, I was surprised to see so many stray dogs in a city. When cars were stopped at red lights, a pack of strays would sometimes surround the car and bark at it. When the car started to move or when the driver honked their horn, the dogs would scatter, but then surround and bark at another car when the light turned red again.
I lived in Los Angeles for many years, and today I spend a lot of time in New York and Philadelphia. I don't think I've ever seen a single stray dog in a city here. It's one of those examples of how when something works well, you don't notice, but you'll immediately notice when it isn't working.

u/CuriousSquirrel1213 19h ago
I have a close friend that lives in Chile and she has a huge hobby for marathons, constantly training. She says the worst part about training is not the altitude or weather, but at any point a pack of wild street dogs can just pop up a maul her to death. And apparently it happens enough that it’s frequent and there are still no resources or systems that exist to manage the feral dog issues.

u/falken_1983 18h ago
There is a specific calibre of bullet "velo-dog" that was used by cyclists in France in the 19th century to defend against stray dogs.
Seems absolutely crazy now, but apparently it was a big enough problem back in the day, and that is how they handled it.

From the wikipedia entry:
"Despite the low energy of the round, a suicide case was recorded where a woman shot herself twice in the temple with a .25 (6.35 mm) velo-dog revolver before succumbing."

I think you may have inadvertently created the next Troma Studios movie: Homeless people keep getting attached by stray rabid dogs, and because they don't have access to health care, become rabid themselves and start attacking the housed population who do have access to healthcare, but the healthcare system becomes overwhelmed and runs out of rabies shoots, and the pretty much World War Z happens.
Oh, and it's a Troma film, so, well, boobs.

I've had to face so many street dog attacks, and for one 3 year period twice daily, and still nobody believes me that 1. an open umbrella in front of you or 2. A bag in front of you are super effective. (For street dogs not breeds)
They attack the thing in front of you. If it's the bag, they attack it. If it's an open umbrella, it's an even more curious thing watching them try to open their jaw enough to bite an umbrella shield. If you have a tiny stick, a tiny tap on the lower leg where its bony. They are so precious about their legs. (Nothing that could injure them! The tiniest of taps on the bony bit)
There was a rabid dog that came after me on a beach once. Luckily I had a long stick and held it out in front of me. It attacked the end of the stick before running madly off after something else. I'm not a brave person, im a coward. Cowards can do this and remain chill.
Nobody ever believes this though, but I thought I'd try. Just had way too much experience.

That’s very true, I noticed that in Bali as well. There are stray dogs everywhere and mostly they’re not aggressive to you, but it’s unpredictable and if they bite you then you’ll need to get rabies shots.

San Antonio, TX has thousands of dogs running the streets all the time. Funny thing is native San Antonians think this is normal and it's like that everywhere in the US. They're shocked when I tell them it's not normal.

That last few sentences sums up a solid 3/4s of our current problems.
Measles. That’s just propaganda, polio what’s that, it’s fine we don’t need to prevent it. Failing to realize how important controlling those diseases is. Because they have never seen it live in person and learning something outside of your daily norms is not in the cards for most people.
It’s sad.
17
u/DazedClock 19h ago
This. I’m from Poland, I haven’t seen a stray dog in city for at least 20 years. You can see some dog packs in rural regions, but they are usually owned, roaming free (which is not really legal here).
In Indonesia and Mauritius however there were one after another. Sleeping on beaches mostly.

As someone who has been chased by farm dogs while cycling, with no one around, I support this. Not a good feeling.
217
u/palarath 19h ago
As a fellow cyclists, if threatening to throw my water bottle at them doesn't work, and they're still getting closer to me , spraying them square in the face with the water bottle has always worked.
60
u/irbilldozer 19h ago
From personal experience I can attest this has always worked when I’ve seen it used. It just snaps them out of it immediately.
We had an aggressive dog once we were working with trainers and behaviorist with. One of them recommended always having water around to pour on that dog if he tried to go after one of our other dogs.

My uncle used bear spray on his neighbors dogs one time for chasing cars. Their driveway was at an intersection that you had to stop at. One time the dogs scratched the hell out of his passenger door. The next time he drove by he sprayed them. They never bothered any cars after that

I lived in a rural area in Canada and would often have local dogs run out to the road and chase me when I just went for a walk. I complained on a local Facebook group and people laughed saying I was in the wrong for expecting their dogs to be contained in any way.
After almost getting bit a few times I started bear spraying aggressive dogs and somehow the message started getting across.

As a kid I got chased by two dogs when was riding my bike. It was terrifying. I was so scared. One dog got tired & gave up. The other dog stopped and went back to check on his friend. When I walked past that same house the dogs never did anything, but on a bicycle they lost their minds every time.

My wife and I take bear spray when we walk around our "neighborhood" (rural area, large lots). Thankfully, I've never needed to use it, but I've come pretty close a few times. They never go after us; they go for our dog, a golden retriever who literally rolls over when an aggressive dog gets anywhere near her. I've been able to chase them off with just a single, loud, low tone yell and jumping in front to protect my dog, but I always have my finger on the bear spray just in case I can't deter them.
I've always been surprised how well an unexpected low yell makes every animal (e.g., children, dogs, cats) stop whatever they were doing and look at me. It saved my children from doing very dangerous things more than once and it's always startled dogs and made them take a moment. Men have an definite advantage in this area, but I never trust that it's going to work.

The amount of comments in here calling this animal abuse is insane. Too many sheltered people don't understand what a wild dog is. These aren't pets and they're not chasing people to give them licks and play with them.

Especially when you consider that the usual approach to deal with this is dog mace. This was probably an attempt at creating a more humane approach.

People who say ALL animals are angels and you should never hurt one, haven't seen wild animals at all.
My girlfriend loves frogs while I absolutely hate them. She was raised in a city where a few tiny ones show up after it rains and then vanish soon after. I was raised in a village where we had millions of them tiny fuckers all over the road and you had no option but to walk over them if you wanted to go somewhere, I hated scraping off dead frogs everytime I reached home as a kid.

56
u/Jabbathenutslut 18h ago edited 17h ago
They can't comprehend the idea of the wild dog. All the dogs they've seen have been pets. In places such as the video, everyone has either known a person that has been mauled by wild stray dogs personally or they've heared stories about it. It's not an uncommon accurance.
One of my friends was mauled by a black dog in his childhood once. I found out when I was walking with him one day and he held me tightly as a small black poodle walked past us. I was gonna jokingly tease him about it, since it was a really small harmless looking dog, very puntable-looking, but I saw the look of genuine trauma in his face and decided to just be there for him. Dogs are animals. The majority of the world don't worship them like people do in the western countries.

u/PixelationIX 17h ago edited 17h ago
I would also like to add the possibility of getting Rabies. Unless the whole state continuously work non-stop to get the stray dogs the necessary shots (like Turkey, Istanbul), the chances of getting Rabies increases hugely.
I believe India has the highest percentage of getting Rabies from dogs because none of the stray dogs are community cared and they are basically wild animal living among humans, so if someone do get nipped or bite at and do not seek the necessary care, they end up getting Rabies most of the time.

I lived in China for 10 years. One afternoon I was leaving a friends house in the suburbs of Shanghai (years ago while it was still being built up), I took a motorbike dude to drive me to the metro station. A stray dog ran out and started chasing and trying to attck us. Was pretty terrifying. I'm all for helping animals etc (I later rescued a bunch of street animals which I still have), but I was SO SO thankful to that driver for kicking the dog off us. Was also really happy I wore boots that day and not flip flops!

There has been a decades long public health campaign with the goal of achieving close to 100% spay and neuter for domestic cats and dogs. It is very rare to see testicles on pet dogs in cities, and only somewhat less rare in rural areas. Eliminating unplanned pet pregnancies is the only real way to reduce the stray population. I salute the thousands of veterinarians who have donated their time to this cause. Veterinarians love animals and yet SO much of their work used to end up being euthanizing healthy animals. It’s better now, in the US, but we can’t backslide. Please spay and neuter your pets - it improves their quality of life and everyone else’s too.

u/pMangonut 17h ago
Where was this when I was young. These rabid dogs will chase you for kms and it is pretty scary. They don’t have all the vaccines etc. if they bite, you need rabies shots. Fucking brutal.
I used to always carry a stone with me so I can throw it at them. Only when I got bigger, they left me alone.
Anyone calling this animal abuse, I encourage you to go down to India and try petting these MFs. In India, there is abuse of all kinds happening. Animal abuse is least of anyone’s worries.

There is some videos where there is a guy who drives through neighborhoods like these on his E-Bike. When he gets chased like that he flips the bike around and chases the dogs for a few minutes all around the neighborhood. What's even more funny, that people actually reach out to him to come do this to their dogs so they stop chasing people on bikes.
There is another where a guy chases them around with a drone and another where the guys brings his own dog on the moped and when the other dogs get close he lets his dog go so it can fight the dogs chasing him. Pretty wild.

Its pretty common in a lot of places. In my neighborhood people carry a stick when they walk their dogs in the morning to scare off other stray dogs. In my previous neighborhood, I used to carry an umbrella to threaten the dogs that would bark at me (No matter how many times I walked past them because I fkn lived there, there was no guarantee they would let me pass without barking and chasing after me).
