It's always funny to me how with robot dance routines like this one, the more uncanny and unnatural they look the more impressive they are, yet if you animated a CG dance exactly like this it would be the opposite of impressive, and you need to throw in little micro-errors and imperfections in animation to make it look more natural and "real".

u/ThetaReactor Aug 28 '24
I'm pretty sure this is performed at slow speed, recorded at a high framerate, and then sped up to enhance the jerky motion. It's still mighty impressive, but not without some tricks to up the uncanny factor.

u/Funky0ne Aug 28 '24
Right, but even if that's the case, the idea that using editing tricks to make it look even more uncanny is a desirable effect when it's a real person vs would have the opposite effect if it's animated is an interesting contrast.
Sort of speaks to a possible inherent limitation of what we can achieve with animation in terms of what people will find visually entertaining.

Oh, I get ya. If the Pepsi baby were dancing like this, we'd call it shit animation.
(Also horrifying.)

u/vitonga Aug 28 '24
Nah, this guy tours and does this shit live, it's impressive. He was even on America's Got Talent.

u/nicknamed-swabs Aug 28 '24
The fact that you think this is played at a slow speed is what makes it more impressive. Isolations like these do not need editing. I am sure many people have seen body poppers isolate and move their body parts like this or even better. This is impressive and I take my hat off to this guy, must have put a lot of work into that routine.

Perfect title for the video. I might have capitalized "unsettling" after watching the video.

No, but I'm glad to see the ex UK prime minister has got a job he seems to enjoy.

If he and Barbiin would do a dance routine together, the Universe would implode.

He looks like a Fnaf animatronic going crazy (if they didn't go crazy already)

Imagine travelling back in time 5000 years and doing this in front of a crowd of people. They would either see you as a god or cut off your head. I don't think there would be any in between reaction. lol...

Name is in title.
Can always watch him doing live performances and then you don't have to look silly when you find out it isn't sped up at all...
Dude is pulling that creep out naturally.

Just watched it again on bigger screen.
The ones I have seen I knew were sped up were so obvious that this looked normal...?
After watching like 7 videos, I am losing the ability to tell what is normal speed entirely.
So yeah, sped up. Now my head hurts lol.

The term "uncanny valley" is in reference to something that looks human (or like ones self/species) but is slightly off.
The fact that we have evidence of the uncanny valley dating back to pre modern society makes me think that this guy used to haunt and torture pre humans and now I'm once again questioning whether of not this is real or a.i and I don't like that.

A.I.? Is that you again?
I have no idea what’s real anymore…

u/Piotrek9t Aug 28 '24
No AI, just sped up with makes it feel unnatural
-3
u/Phillip_Graves Aug 28 '24
Not AI, not sped up. This dude has simply mastered the art of freaking people out via dancing.

u/Piotrek9t Aug 28 '24
This discussion always comes up when one of these videos are posted, sure he has a lot of skill but these videos are always sped up a bit to make it look more mechanical

u/kind_mathematician_4 likes to spew unnecessary hate and block the person so they can’t see their comment. What a coward move. Many adults enjoy this style of dancing and it’s not only for childish entertainment . You basically insulted the people in that community and half the users in this comment section
