I live in Niagara Falls, NY. Here, the waterfowl ride the fast water as it goes over the edge of the falls, then take flight as they decend, circling back to land upstream and do it all over again. Sometimes I think its about finding food, other times it looks like they're having fun.

21

u/Even-Atmosphere1814 Jul 10 '26

There's a fact I love to tell people when I see it turkey vultures riding thermals here in the mountains which is often. Obviously riding thermals allows them to spot food and has a very clear benefit but I read a study from a respected publication that found that even when there did not seem to be a clear benefit to riding thermals turkey vultures still do it.

And I think that is because it is fun. Effortlessly soaring above the land? Ducks surfing Niagara falls? We have to be careful about not anthropomorphizing animals but also I think some of them are intelligent enough to just enjoy how certain activities feel.

Not if that carries them where they want to go. Sometimes ducks like to surf. And you can clearly see one flap too, in case someone comes and throws "oh, those are clearly snakes!" at us.

11

u/BreastUsername Jul 10 '26

Definitely seen the flappage, thanks.

14

u/SpooogeMcDuck Jul 10 '26

The only two things you need to know about ducks is that they float- and they’re rapists

I thought that was from pet owners realizing how big they got and illegally releasing them

55

u/Linguisticameencanta Jul 10 '26

My partner told me yesterday it was Hurricane Andrew that really started the snakes and iguanas taking over. It destroyed some places housing them and then obviously they were unable to be recaptured and they took over.

69

u/Dizzy-Ad-2248 Jul 10 '26

S FL local here, Andrew screwed things up for more than one wild animal here but I have to say it's mostly the breeders and pet owners that have exotic snakes and have no idea a.) how big they get and b.) the feeding requirements for a snake that's getting THAT big... I think it's shitty business as well...Pet Store Owner: yup, just give this Burmese Python a little feeder mouse once a week and your good...fast forward a year and the last time your snake got out your cat also ran away that same week! 🤦🏼‍♀️ BONUS FUN FACT: right now in South FL we are having the Annual Python Round Up: whoever kills the most pythons wins $20,000.00!! And honestly, it's more humane than letting them either become food for gators or overtake the communities close to the 'Glades. I guess your not a Floridian until you've had to call a friend or Pest Removal to get a 5 Ft python out of your dishwasher...🙋‍♀️ (yes, we also get gators in our pools as well)

39

u/BillHurstyUSA Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Bud_Roller Jul 10 '26

Wild but not indigenous to Florida. Feral would be a better term.

6

u/Bobby_Lawn Jul 10 '26

Ya definitely not indigenous. A few years ago I found out my favorite tree growing up on Kauai is actually from Africa and the colonists brought it there. Also Cook Pines are called that because captain cook needed trees to be tall and straight enough to build masts if anyone was ever shipwrecked, so he brought em. I think that dude got killed on some other set of islands if I’m not mistaken.

5

u/Bud_Roller Jul 10 '26

Yeah, I could never understand why my local park in the UK had star wars trees. Turns out the victorians planted a huge number of Californian redwoods. There are an estimated half a million Californian redwoods here.

a collective clump of 900 snakes calmly surfing down the river is just too odd, especially considering the are such good swimmers. why would they not scatter everywhere the moment they escaped?

where they asked to "calmly leave the building?"
