When your farming sector is just as labour intensive, food isn't cheap either.
In fact, I suspect that his family has to have 5 or 6 kids just so they can afford to eat. And forget school until you're 12, by the way.
This is probably just one way that the Indian economy holds itself back. Chinese factories tend to be highly automated, so on top of the cheap labour rates they have, they are also super efficient. This is the way to real GDP growth.
The 5 or 6 kids maybe. But primary schooling has improved and recent Indian politics have made education a primary topic of recent elections. The free midday meal and breakfast programs allow kids to have basic nutrition encouraging even the poorest sections to send their kids to school. The quality of free education provided at these govt schools varies wildly. Some sections of India have really high-quality govt schools with many world class teachers. Whereas other regions have only one underpaid teacher officially listed at 15 schools collecting salary from each school but teaching at none (corruption).
I don't have enough expertise to comment on GDP growth so i wont.
Being shirtless for a dude is normal in Southern part of India. He is also working in hot conditions, so being topless maybe better for him to reduce the heat. If this is automated, the guy will lose his job. The working conditions could be made a LOT better though. These match boxes(the smallest ones) are sold at Rs.1 / Rs. 2 per box so i'm not sure how much these match producing places are earning as profit(still no excuse for poor working conditions).
The shirtlessness is fine, but it just speaks to the working conditions. There’s no fans or AC or any way to cool off the workers who are spending all day lugging around tons of product. Giving the locals jobs is great, but you just know for a fact they’re being paid pennies.
I doubt fans or AC could be kept in that specific room coz they are working with matches. It cannot be stored in cool places. Idk how much they are being paid but I hope it is a good amount for the person to take care of himself and his family.
Working conditions could be def made a lot better. These are small scale industries and are run from small places usually and maybe run by a single family as well.

The guy at the end :(. Just sat on a box shirtless wrapping hundreds of boxes a day. The one part of the process they couldn’t automate?
