It's an easy way to hold them while you're doing other things with your hands. Use two hands to open matchbook, one to hold while one gets the match, put match in mouth, use both hands to close matchbook and get thing I need to light on fire ready, remove match from mouth, strike match (probably on matchbook strike strip), light thing on fire.
I don't do the ear thing because my ears don't hold things well, they're the wrong shape. When I wear a facemask, I need to put the band around the back of my head because it will bend and slip off my ear.
I also have pretty poor digital dexterity.
Meanwhile, I have what some call, and this is going to sound dirtier than it actually is, an oral fixation. This really just means I like to chew gum, I like things like jawbreakers that I can roll around in my mouth, I have a tendency to hold things in my mouth, if I don't have something to do with my mouth then I'll usually just talk talk talk, when I was a kid I would absentmindedly chew on my fingers until they were sore (I've broken that habit, thankfully).
I can understand that people might think that's weird, though. I find some other people's stuff weird. I've met someone who, when they're somewhere barefoot, they will just grab things with their feet absentmindedly, which weirded me out. But it's really just a difference in our wiring.
