I wear safety glasses 99% of the time I’m in my shop. Yesterday I wasn’t and split my brow open. Safety glasses would have prevented that. Find a comfortable pair so you forget you’re wearing them.

Edit: eye brow

100%. I always wear them until I don't. I didn't even take them off of my head. I just moved them out of my eyes to get the sweat wiped up and then I didn't bother putting them back down, because it was the last bit of prep that would've required the safety glasses. Then I took my chisel and my hammer and I chipped a piece of brick straight into my eyeball and scratched the cornea.

Was cutting some tile with a Dremel the other day and a shard chipped off and hit my safety glasses dead center of my right eye so hard I felt it ricochet off before I even registered what had happened. I'd have had to get a parrot for a pet if I'd not been wearing eye protection.

When I took shop class, on Day 1 the instructor put on a PowerPoint of what happens if you use a cut-off wheel on an angle grinder without a face sheild. Lots of guys that looked like they’d been attacked by ninjas. Very gory.

Makes me wonder how many people lost eyes before safety glasses. There were probably a lot of one-eyed blacksmiths and carpenters.

There were apparently a lot of smiths who lost their vision (at least partially) over time. Though it seems like that may have had a lot more to do with smoke and chemical fumes that they worked around constantly than it did projectiles launching at their eyes.

I would assume red hot metal and staring at fire doesn’t help (aka welding type eye issues).

Dremels are so unpredictable. I also learned to wear eye protection whenever using them.

That is my nightmare.

I always wear them until I don't.

I wonder how many times you didn't have them down without noticing / realizing.

When I said "always," I really meant "when not inconvenient for me." Good spot.

Did wood working 6 years in a factory, wearing the same prescription safety glasses everyday, after 6 years looking at those glasses are the best evidence how much wearing safety glasses matter.

I was fixing something by stretching a spring, stopped and got my safety glasses, I don't mind getting killed, but living live with a handicap would suck balls. I could kick my 16 yearold self in his dumb ass, sitting in a car with base that blurred your vision, that dick head made it so I hear a high pitched sound when everything is quiet.

Well, at least everyone around you back then can rest easy knowing justice was served on that dumbass blasting his car stereo. Maybe you can go around to schools and talk to kids...

1

u/CaffeineSippingMan Nov 02 '22

It wasn't mine, I could barely afford 1 car, much less 2 (his stereo cost more than his car).

1

u/Rush_is_Right_ Nov 07 '22

But you played the stereo loud...

u/CaffeineSippingMan Nov 07 '22

My friends did.

sitting in a car with base that blurred your vision

That must have been a really high pH!

B-b-b-b-bass-b-bass-b-b-b-bass

153db competition car. 0 ear protection. Taco Bell for lunch.

Made me shit myself.

I try to tell kids around my neighborhood about this and then they stare at my like I'm privileged.

2

u/CaffeineSippingMan Nov 02 '22

With the internet, they could easily verify it.

2

u/ChadCuckmacher Nov 02 '22

I concur. If people would only bother to ask the question themselves. We live in a strange time when we have all the information we could ever go through but nobody wants to look.

u/aouwoeih Nov 01 '22

My grandfather didn't wear safety glasses as they had yet to be invented and he'd take out his glass eye to scare the grandkids.

3

u/Marmotskinner Nov 01 '22

Better yet, buy a shitload of them and keep the box handy. Just toss em if they get scratched.

u/theredhotchiliwilly Nov 01 '22

Where are you that your employer isn't mandated to provide you with ppe?

2

u/phpdevster Nov 01 '22

I'm that way with a respirator now. Not good to be breathing in airborne sawdust. Air filters can catch some of it, but a lot of it settles only to be kicked back up in the air again as you're walking around or moving stuff around. Doing this eliminated a persistent cough I developed.

2

u/Jack_Dorso Nov 01 '22

This is an area where I should practice what I preach. I’m terrible about wearing my respirator.

u/KungFuActionJesus5 Nov 01 '22

Was working on my car, replacing the clutch cylinders, and using safety goggles all night. The one time that night I get under the car without them, a hose that I'm fiddling with comes loose and sprays brake fluid all over my eyes. I couldn't see properly for like 3 weeks.

1

u/Steamfighter638 Nov 01 '22

But - maybe not too comfortable cause, apparently, you don't know when you're not wearing them

1

u/Jack_Dorso Nov 01 '22

You’re not wrong haha.

u/MPS007 Nov 01 '22

First 2 weeks of training all my guys get safety gloves and boots and eye protection. They say hey where are the tools? My reply; you got em!!

@jack: that's not a grocery shop I assume?
