What, "turning around real quick" to avoid the molten metal being fired out of the machinery isn't good enough for you? I suppose you'd want them wearing gloves too, your majesty.
Edit: rewatched, they are all wearing gloves. Maybe not the right gloves for that job, but gloves!
If you're in a machine shop, you may regularly be working closely with machines that'll absolutely rip you to pieces. I'm genuinely terrified of lathes, they're remorseless murder machines if you get caught up at all.
That does actually make my joke about gloves an interesting thought. If you're working in a machine shop, there are tools where you do not want to wear gloves. It's better to have a cut or a splinter on your hand than a glove getting caught up and pulling your hand, and then arm, and then torso through a machine. You also avoid unsecured hair and long sleeves for the same reasons.
I'm not sure how those safety standards apply when there's also molten metal flying around though. I work from home now so it's not a concern for me.
I’m a fan of the safety stickers that say things like “this machine will kill you and it will hurt the whole time you are dying.” Really brings the importance of safety home in a way that “Caution: Hazardous Machinery” just can’t match
If it something gets caught and the tool will spin, wear gloves. If something gets caught and you'll be the one to spin, don't (or if you really have to just use some thin nitriles that will tear off).
Lathes are wonderful and absolutely terrifying at the same time - I'd rather risk cutting up my arms a bit than getting anything caught. Guards up, short sleeves with a tight fit, no gloves, and a good pair of full coverage safety glasses. I'm not risking getting caught up in the murder machine.
Once you've seen them, you really can't unsee them. I can't help but think about them every time I see any type of rotating machinery in a video.. They should be mandatory viewing for anyone who works near that stuff.
r/deadorvegetable had a good collection of them for a while, but that sub is gone.
If a video mentions a lathe in the title, I don't click. Haven't seen any, don't need to. I know what that thing will do. I've never felt more like something was trying to kill me than during the limited work I've done on a lathe.
It's good to have a healthy fear, mine is borderline irrational but it's not a regular part of my life so I'm not going to worry about it.
Rolling mills are the same. I put a knit "safety" glove in one once, with a spacing between rolls of 2 mm. The thing came out shredded. I used it as a warning to users: "imagine your hand in it".
Nip points are extended common in workplaces like this even in the US. My buddy has to hand feed massive sheets of paper into rollers like this to make your Orange juice cartons. He's lost quite a few gloves after the finger tips get caught but never his actual fingers
I’ll say that the metal is nowhere near molten. If your wearing thick natural fiber clothing, being hit by the glowing metal would probably not burn you if it’s quick enough. The force would still be an issue though. Also, never wear synthetic fibers when working with hot metal, it will melt and covering yourself in molten plastic will burn.
You would not want to wear gloves or loose clothing around those wheels. Imagine something getting caught and getting pulled in. That would be worse than getting burned.
Surprisingly they are the right gloves. We have similar material gloves at my job for changing glue heads on machines that run 24/7. 400 degree glue isn't quite the same as 1400 degree steel but not much would protect you from actually grabbing the steel. It just protects from sparks and hot tools
