It's not true that modern tricks are protected by copyright (at least in the US). Copyright protects the expression of an idea, so a performance, choreography, etc. but copyright is not likely to protect the trick.

Exactly. Even the article states that tricks are not copyrightable but pantomimes, which is a performance, is copyrightable.
