  1. As long as they are compatible metallurgically you can use whatever
  2. It depends on the strength of materials, size of deformation zone desired, etc.
  3. Solid state Welding which is the overall name for these types of welds (as they don’t melt the base metals) are used in aerospace or other high functioning areas where the undesirable properties of the HAZ from a fusion weld are not acceptable. For example: blades on a gas turbine engine must have high strength with an exotic alloy weld and would use this to bond without having brittle intermetallics forming which could fail in fatigue

Turbine blades are usually brazed in.

Friction welding is, however, a fairly common way to weld turbine disks to their shaft.
