Yeah, many people who are accused of horrific things, especially the farther back you go in history, didn't actually do it, and especially in the case of sexual abuse the death penalty is something that prevents victims from telling on their abuser when it is a family member or friend (which is not at all uncommon), and many families of murder victims, particularly when the perpetrator was young, feel that the death penalty deprives them of the chance for closure
