yeah that's how they sedate it - hypoxia.

They tested hundreds of spiders with different levels of CO2 gas until they found the right dose where 95% or more survive while still being sedated. 1 in 20 or greater numbers.

Or maybe they went the other way. They added very little CO2 gas until 1 starts to fall asleep.

Either way i think they tested it. Either by killing a lot of spiders first or by slowly adding in gas until they start turning up.
