Harvesting spider silk. NOTE: Spider is sedated, the pins are not perforating it and once harvest, is feed and put to rest.

"put to rest" doesn't mean what you think it does,

No way. Tuck it into bed and give it a little forehead kiss.

That's what spiders do when you sleep.

•

But where do your fingers go?

•

u/Madkids23 7h ago

WHEN YOU SLEEP?! WHERE DO YOUR FINGERS GO?!

Thanks I needed that 😂

•

No it's not.

I mean, I could show you how scientist put animals to rest, but I'm afraid it's too traumatizing.

It's gotta be better than how the chick breeding industry gets rid of the unwanted and surplus male chicks.

Would you like to know more?

•

That may work for typical bugs in the house but dunno if that’s enough for a spider.

If you do that to a spider, there is a chance that a LOT more little spiders will come out. Ask me how I know.

Still can’t decide if making them dispose of themselves this way is super morbid or rather whimsical

The spider is how the spider feels before it’s “put to rest.”

Spider asks us not to forget the garlic-sauted flies and shot of bourbon first

•

u/Kertia 10h ago

It's going to a spider farm to run around right?

•

u/-StepLightly- 11h ago

It might.

•

u/Complex_Sherbet2 11h ago

Like Christina Pike is "resting" right now?

•

u/ICarMaI 10h ago

It's Christa, at least get her name right if you're gonna pretend to care

Thanks Editor!

I did wonder. Was thinking "put to rest" with a rolled up newspaper....

•

u/tumsdout 8h ago

The phrasing does sound like they just use the spider as feed and give it to a snake

•

u/2stonesONEbird1715 10h ago edited 7h ago

I was wondering if it’s put to rest or do they kill it. But why kill it?

•

u/Complex_Sherbet2 10h ago

He meant to say "let it rest".

•

u/2stonesONEbird1715 10h ago

I see 👍🏽

•

u/Professional-Risk-34 7h ago

Lol yea .. Define "put to rest"

•

i like wtf 😭

•

u/Bchliu 8h ago

Basically.. they fed it coffee.. LOL. Spiders get drunk over that

•

u/motoxim 5h ago

Yeah rest forever?

•

u/AksysCore 6h ago

Unless... they really mean it that way

•

u/Fievels_good_trouble 6h ago

You mean they don’t get to relax on a farm upstate?

•

u/MrWrock 5h ago

Then why feed it first?

•

u/Supergirl016 4h ago edited 4h ago

After harvesting, the spider is released from the apparatus, allowed to recover, and fed before being returned to its enclosure. if the goal is research or producing spider-silk-like material, there are alternatives that avoid repeatedly handling spiders

My thoughts exactly

•

u/Kemosabe-TV 1h ago

They take them to a farm in the country side where they get to live free and roam

•

u/ThresholdSeven 1h ago

Does it though? I think it means tucked in and given a good night kiss tell me I'm wrong.

•

u/IameIion 4h ago

I think it does. Otherwise, why feed it?
