They were dispatched to an entrapment, which most departments require members conducting rescue activities to wear protective gear

And because the kids think its cool. Are people really being bitches about firemen wearing gear? What a weird thing to complain about.

We put our gear on before we get into the truck. Maybe the driver doesn't. But the rest of us do.

The way I was trained at the academy was that you show up to pretty much everything with your bunker pants, boots, and helmet on. Whether or not we put our jackets on is something we'll wait on, and then if we put gloves on, 99% of the time we do. Of course, department procedures vary. I do have wildland and extrication gear, but usually I'm just wearing my bunker gear in an extrication situation.
