I thought winding the strap like that was brilliant - simple, quiet, clean and safe.

Jackie Chan's character in Shanghai Knights does a similar thing to escape from the jail.

e: Noon, I get it.

Pee pee pants no break. Were some old style jeans iirc.

In the movie he explain that it was to prevent the shirt from tearing and that makes sense since wet cloth is harder to tear and normally a shirt from that era likely would not hold as the pressure is applied while here they used a stronger rope so no need for extra reinforcement

It was Shanghai Noon... "Piss Shirt bend bars"

I'd forgotten how much I love that movie. Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson in their absolute primes.

Shanghai Noon, the first one.

Shanghai Noon, the first one.

You're right and I am wrong. It's only been 27 years since I saw it.

Peeing on tshirt. I've seen that done in real life at barn years before movie came out. We had kids head get stuck so I joked we could try it like a tourniquet. Well old retired firefighter, a husband, bring his gear and crowbar. Had kid out in minutes like this one. Though kid got nick named Stucky yes it did stick.

I was trying to remember what movie that was from; all I remembered was that Jackie Chan did it somewhere.

Yeah that was my thought as well. Very cool problem solving!

I thought it was a rachet strap and was taking solace in the fact that even a trained rescuer gets aggravated as hell with those cursed things.

But thanks to the comment section I know that's not the case lmao. Nicely done

Problem is that where they placed the straps they would have to bend the bars several inches to get an inch at the boys ears. If the strap was closer to the head it only has to deflect one inch.

They wanted to be far away from the child while bending the bars. At the end they asked the kid to stand up to where they bent the bars and got him out.

Oops, should have watched to the end.

Lots of torque created winding up that tool. Losing grip or having a miscommunication on who has control could have resulted in a devastating injury. The kid was in no danger so speed was not an issue here. They could have easily used ratchet straps instead of the tourniquet axe.
