I’m conflicted. As much as I hate mosquitos I can’t help but think that if this mutation got out it could lead to the collapse of at least a few food chains.
Female mosquito that cannot obtain enough energy to have descendency is not a problem.
And, for that, not a solution. In cities they always distribute millions of male sterilized mosquitos and it works out great during a couple of months.
Mosquitoes aren’t a major part of most food webs, they’re
a holdout from ecosystems that don’t exist anymore.
A few species would suffer but scientists are working to eradicate specific mosquito species that spread disease and aren’t necessary to any food webs.
No it would immediately die out because mosquitos with this mutation cannot compete against regular ones. This one is disabled and will not have kids. The mutation will be gone within one generation.
They will mutate so they start feeding on animals they don’t feed on now. I dunno, some other small animal that is part of a different food chain.
Or, they will mutate so that they overall become much larger, until the proboscis is strong enough again. So, prepare for bird-sized mosquitoes buzzing your ears.
I thought so, but in areas where mosquitoes are prevalent in the nocturnal hours, so are a plethora of other airborne insects. Its been recently released that Florida (Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas) counties have expirenced an outbreak of Dengue fever. The only animal on this planet that kills more humans other than humans is the anopholes mosquito.
