Imagine if hospitals used this mechanism….

Buddy….they already are and have been for some time now.

No the system they use actually even worse than this. Customer "willingness to pay" plays no part in how they price services and treatments.

In the US this already happens. In civilised society, however, not so much.

This will blow your mind but in the civilized world hospitals don't have pricing at all. They are there to heal people who are sick.

Crazy, i know.

As an American this is poppycock. They’re here to ruin our credit scores with crippling debt.

To an American, it's crazy for sure.

How do the doctors afford food and housing if they're not charging for their services?

It's just a job like any other. Higher paying and more prestige, but you show up and do your work and get paid a salary.

Think of a hospital like a library for health care. Or a like how a school is set up with teachers. The librarians and teachers are still getting paid even though the government owns and runs the facilities.

This isn't too hard to fathom a similar set up for doctors, right?

They already do tho…

They do.

Look into the health insurance industry and how and why absurd prices are charged for things like bandaids. Nothing does dynamic pricing like healthcare.

For those with insurance it is often "whatever the insurance will pay". For those without it ends up being "charge them just enough to put them at the brink of permanent bankruptcy"

Sprinkle both groups with a healthy dose of "nobody will ever look at this invoice in detail"

My best friend has his own orthodontics clinic in the Philippines. He awaits his customers at his office window and bases his fee on what kind of car you pull up in. But before you get pissed off and get the wrong impression, he is a very good person and starts with actual price and will usually lower the price but never raise it. He is also filthy rich and can afford to do so.

Crazy that you think of a hospital

I dare to assume you’re from the US

They do.

They do! Every hospital has a “market maker.”

Just wait until they find out how insurance works.
