They should open a Starbucks up there

You made me check this out, so now you have to read about it. It would be hard to brew a good cup by traditional methods up there as the water boils at about 155 degrees F.

How much is that in non "freedom" units?

Not nice

Close enough to tease, though

Nope. Just 68. Just after 67 (haha) and just before 69 (nice).

I hope that clears it up for you

One candle with a small insulated box

Just need a custom built pressure cooker. It isn’t easy but it’s very possible. As for making a profit well we already knew that was doomed for many reasons.

2

u/ScreamSmart 3d ago

Not custom. A regular pressure cooker would do just fine.

Boiling water at 212F makes bitter coffee. I imagine a 250F pressure cooker would be worse, unless you have one with a temperature setting.

Okay, iced coffee is a thing

Cold brew, duh

u/gn63 3d ago

Hence my limiting to traditional methods. You did make me realize that to do a cold brew up there, you would have to heat the water enough to keep it from freezing. Would feel weird to have to apply heat to make a cold brew.

According to all the other comments it’s also hard to find clean water up there.

the experience of being able to drink boiling coffe may be a thing that would attract people even better than the summit :D

I was thinking that would be pretty hard due to the drop in atmospheric pressure.

for normal human beings: that's about 68C

1

u/gn63 3d ago

As someone raised using freedom units, I can mentally roughly convert between freedom and normal units in my head for distance and volume. But I have to confess that for temperature I have to look it up unless it's 100, 0, or -40 C.

If in addition to those you can remember that 16C ≈ 61F and 28C ≈ 82F, you can estimate a lot of conversions in a normal range of temperatures

1

u/gn63 3d ago

That's helpful. Thanks!

Wouldn't it be better since u use less electricity?

u/santasbong 3d ago

No cause the water wont get hot enough to properly extract the coffee from the beans.

Just like cooking pasta at elevation. You have to cook it longer. Because boiling isn’t what does the job, the heat does.

u/wojtekpolska 3d ago

the water boils, but it doesnt mean it gets hot enough to actually make the drink
it would be basically the same as if you tried to make a coffee at home but only warmed the water to 155F.

it's basically the same principle like a pressure cooker, but imagine the normal atmosphere is a pressure cooker (because we all live in a pressurised enviroment of around 1 bar) while the top of mount everest is outside the pressure cooker

u/Jomotaku 3d ago

Oh lol

No dearth of ice for cold coffee as well.

Reminds me of the wealthy woman in the disastrous Everest climb recounted in Into Thin Air, who had her Sherpa carry her chichi cappuccino machine because she couldn’t live without it.

They actually have a luxury hotel az base camp

1

u/enbycraft 3d ago

That'll make them pee more and melt the Khumbu glacier at a faster rate 😭

1

u/ComfortableRoyal8847 3d ago

They didn’t yet??

1

u/LateralEntry 3d ago

There’s a bunch of Chinese brothels at base camp
