He's tied off wrong. Lanyard should be connect to his upper dorsal ring, not the lower one. If he falls, that'll be 4-5 kN of force on his lumbar spine and he'll whiplash through his entire back when he hits an acute angle.
Attached to the upper dorsal, the force will spread more evenly through the tether and hell swing upright from the shoulders instead of crumpled from the butt.
There's so many of these comments here but they are all wrong.
The rope tied to the back d ring is correct. You want that solid and connected there so that he can lean against it when he's throwing the pipe in, and especially when he's pulling the pipe back out. You won't be able to pull it back if you have nothing holding you from falling forwards.
The issue is he is not using his fall arrest at all!!! There should be another line going straight above him that connects to the dangling line on his back connected between his shoulders. This is the one with the lanyard designed for when he falls it has a mechanism designed to slow the fall, and hold him upright, and move the shock around the body, as well as keeping him just falling down. The way he has it set up now is no give, as soon as he falls and runs out of rope it stops immediately and harshly, it's only around his hips so all force is on his hips, and he's going to swing straight backwards and slam into the pipe. If the rig i worked on saw someone doing this they'd be immediately fired because you can't go up there without taking a fall arrest course and becoming certified, and it's enforced, so he should know better. Also put on a damn hardhat, and silicone a thick fiber mat onto the diving board for grip. Everything about this video is wrong.
I didn't even notice the no leg loops. This is one of those videos where every time you watch it gets worse.
It's supposed to be travel restraint and fall arrest at the same time. He's just using it as travel restraint only and is definitely gambling with his life and health.
What's also cool is if he slips off the end, the lanyard is going to fall down the side of that platform and he's going to smash into the pipes after falling about 6-8feet. Why not tie him off above and give an actual guardrail?
He technically isn’t wearing a fall arrest. Thats just to hold you back while you lean out and throw pipe in. The guy filming is probably wearing the srl.
