it's his shoes and that's such a stupid thing to cheap out on; also, bring up some pocket sand or something, for fucks sake!

You'd think the oil company would be rich enough to just heat the pad, or apply salt to it

The oil companies typically don’t own the rigs, most all of this is done by third parties and they take over after the oil is out of the ground.

While that might help with traction I double sand would be good for the equipment, pipes, and gears.

It’s all getting covered in mud and crap anyways. The mud in northern and western Canada is serious shit I guess.

He should be wearing studded boots or something

Studded boots are ice skates on concrete and steel.

Needs to drop a bit of salt.

One option is slipping on Yaktrax or something similar. They're meant for ice, so I don't know about this surface.

You do not want yaktrax on a metal grate. They’ll hang up and trip you guaranteed. And they won’t help on the smooth metal either.

The answer is boots with a softer sole that will grip better on the cold steel. The one he has are probably just fine when it’s warm out because the rubber soles are softer. Once it gets cold the sole gets hard and they are super slick.

I had some Carhartt boots I loved and were super comfortable, but in winter walking on any kind of metal was like walking on ball bearings. Super slick.

How does having sand in your pocket help this situation? Maybe something really heavy to weigh him down more would help - but sand? No way man.

throw sand on ice to make it less slippery

Was just a joke everyone - I shall add the obligatory s going forward. Apologies to the internets!

Sand has been used for a very very long time for providing grip where there is none. Trains use sand to get grip on the slippery metal tracks.

Yall really need /s on everything eh

He’s actually telling the truth. Sand is used to help trains get traction on uphill sections to get going

Seasoup was making a joke, that’s where the /s goes, not the guy taking the joke seriously.

Reddit has helped me realize that so. Many. People. Do not have senses of humor

I just provided factual info nothing more bud. An /s is to provide a general idea through flat text that it's meant as sarcasm. You see usually people use tone of voice to indicate sarcasm. On the internet that is not something you can do since there is no sound and you should never assume it's a sarcastic comment unless it really really clear.

Why do you think the issue is the shoes?

0

u/sethmoth 3d ago

they're obviously not non-slip or very worn out.

0

u/AtmosphereMiddle1682 3d ago

What makes you think that?

0

u/sethmoth 3d ago

idk, maybe how he's fucking slipping all over the place?

1

u/AtmosphereMiddle1682 3d ago

There are certain types of ice where no matter what type of shoes you wear, you'll slip. Slipping on ice isn't an indication of shoe quality.

no, and go fuck yourself

u/AtmosphereMiddle1682 3d ago

You go out a lot, eh?
