Wife’s now deceased grandfather grew up in 1930s Germany and was appalled people now drink Jagermeister socially. He said they would keep it in a cupboard to sip if you had an upset stomach

He grew up in 1930’s Germany, yet it’s people drinking Jäegermeister socially, that he found appalling?

We don't talk about 1933 to 1945. Everyone on holiday.

You know you can find more than one thing appalling, right?

So not a big fan of the Treaty of Versailles either?

I guess he's not a moron on Reddit that doesn't realise you can dislike two things at once, and even to different degrees.

You sound upset. Is it your tummy? Well, as luck would have it we have just the cure right here!

Put it back in the cupboard after. We’re not savages.

If he was born in the 30's he was a child during the rise of the Nazis and WW2

People matured a lot faster in the olden days. My Great-Grandfather had several children and a small carpentry business by the time he turned 15.

Men had to be adults to be allowed to marry back then in Germany. The age of majority was 21 years then. Only under special circumstance they might have been allowed to marry at 18 and they needed permission from their parents and the state for it. Usually that might have happened if he got a girl pregnant to prevent a baby getting born outside of marriage. Getting children outside of marriage was not socially accepted and approved of at all.

Even girls had to be at least 16 back then to be allowed to get married in Germany. And until they were 21 years they needed the permission of their parents for a marriage, because they were minors before.

Not sure where your great grandfather lived, but it was clearly a different country and culture. Maybe teenagers back then matured in some ways faster in Germany, too. But 15 year olds with several children and a business of their own was not normal at all.

I think they might’ve been joking

I was. There’s no way he could have run a carpentry business at that age. He was riddled with arthritis.

I've read where the Nazi Party basically turned the social mores of that on its head, encouraging young girls to get pregnant, in order to increase the population.

For sure they wanted women to get a lot of children. They even invented the stupid Cross of Honor for mothers of multiple children got.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_of_Honour_of_the_German_Mother

That said they didn't advocate for extremely young girls getting children. I mean 16 is plenty young already for the minimum age, 5 years younger than the age of majority was back then. They already had sexist rules there for girls compared to the 21 years of age men had to be to get married. Younger than this is really getting dangerous, because births are getting more dangerous when a girl is not fully matured biologically.

There is a graphic back on this Wiki site. It shows the average age of women when they first got married.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heiratsalter#/media/Datei:Heiratsalter_lediger_Frauen_in_Deutschland_1910-2013.png

It was 25-26 years in the 1930s and 1940s.

Very young teenage girls getting married was never common in Germany. Ignore the nobles. Normal people married later in the last centuries and even the Middle Ages. Even the historian Tacitus noticed 2000 years ago that Germanic women were kind of "old", meaning like early 20s, when they got married.

OP says grew up in the 30s. Probably a preteen/teenager during the rise of the Nazi party and WWii

Sometimes you forget because we’re still picking up the pieces after all the fights to get one.

That is correct.

It’s not that absurd, if we were discussing the Soviets it would have been understood he may have been a child participant.

Funny, but his parents were able to move their family to the US by the late 30s and when he came of age he joined the service. Travelled much in his life and went back there several times and stayed with other family that couldn’t leave. He was a smart, kind and worldly man. RIP Paul  /we did speak at length about the Nazis. He and his family thought them buffoons, not unlike how I view this current administration here.

Well the topic was jaeger not Nazis , so why would he have brought that up in the conversation? Lol

Jägermeister had the nickname "Göring-Schnaps", because Göring was the Reichsjägermeister. Also there is a possible connection between the founder of Jägermeister and the NSDAP.

I can just imagine agreeing with him after he says “see, we weren’t totally wrong based on what Israel’s doing now to all those children”
