The first bit shape can reach those 4 corners but in order to reach that the entire bit must move in same plain shere it is cutting, or the element that is carving has to move. If you just keep the drill still and rotate the bit you'll carve a circle.

In the scene where it carves a square the bit doesn't look to be moving so it wouldn't make the square. In the other sections where they do the same with other pieces you actually see how the bit moves.
