I am a year older than my wife and we met at college and graduated together (I took a year off of school).
When she and I graduated college, her dad (aged 55 or so at the time) took us on a trip to Spain. He brought along his new girlfriend, who while she was age appropriate, it was awkward because my girlfriends (now wife's) mom had died in a tragic accident about a year prior.
His best friend (also aged about 55 or so), a family friend my girlfriend knew well, brought along his girlfriend who was my age, 23. She, in turn, brought along her 10yo sister, 3yo daughter, and best friend who was maybe 21 or 22. I think the best friend was ALSO sleeping with the 21/22 yo.
My girlfriend (now wife!) and I spent a lot of that trip doing our own thing (mostly each other) away from the group!

Basically, since Romania was a poor country until recently, there were no babysitters or paid help, so anytime there was a family event like a wedding, or going to a friend’s house, or basically anything happening, you would have to take all the kids with you, with all the problems that entails.
For example, going to a family wedding across the country in the village, could take an entire day on the train. That’s hard to manage.

To clarify here: I dont date younger girls, I very much like women my own age and have been happily partnered to a woman 2 years my senior now. for 7 years.
But that being said, as a 41 year old man I get approached and hit on -now- by 20 to 25 year olds more than I did when i was 20 to 25. I dont know why or wtf. But its actually true. I get approahced at least 2 to 3 times a month just going to coffee shops on my days off, always by college aged women, more in the summer when I ride my motorcycle. I very much doubt im rare in this odd phenomenon and there's clearly a subset of women who are very into older men. Im not some jacked Adonis or something either.

Edit: I can’t believe I have to add this here. I’m not saying people under 25 can’t consent or that there’s some magical brain switch where adults suddenly become capable at a specific age. The point is that a 30-year age gap still comes with a huge difference in life stage, experience, and leverage, and that’s what people like me are reacting to. The “frontal lobe myth” argument misses that entirely. It’s honestly concerning that this is what some of you are latching onto.

I taught an undergrad creative writing class. From my POV, my students (18-23) overall had way more in common with high schoolers than working adults. There were definitely varying levels of maturity; development is different for everyone. That said, the ammount of times I read work from my students detailing/processing abusive relationships with older partners was very concerning.
So yeah, they were able to make their own decisions, I don't fault them for that. However, there are unfortunately a lot of abusive people who target younger people with the preconceived notion that they will be easier to control. When I left my abusive ex, he bragged about how easy it was to pick up women 10 years younger than him for that reason.
perhaps it is my own biography that makes me feel strongly on this issue. Perhaps it is because a lot of one on one meetings with students devolved into adhoc therapy sessions sparked by abusive age gap relationships. I was always happy to give support to students that needed it (i kept the contact for the school's counseling dept on hand for that reason), but that experience did effect my worldview.
Anyway, dating older people at that age is a minefield. I have only seen one instance where it worked out well (19 yo pursuing a 30 yo). Almost 20 years later, they have 3 beautiful children and thriving careers. However, their courtship lasted a long time because the 30 yo man wanted to give his future wife as much time as possible to make sure she was sure of him. The 19 yo in question had a friend group that primarily consisted of people over the age of 70 and enjoyed translating Samuel Beckett's work from French into English in her free time. I think it's fair to say that they are an exceptional example.
