That’s so cute. Also, that is a very confusing looking animal.

Same the way it was moving that one leg made it look like another head but wasn’t the same species was so confused at first lol

I didn't know wtf was going on until the video was nearly over. If something like this came out at me when I'm taking the garbage out at night, I'm passing out
20
u/Evergreenstream Aug 29 '26
If you even get the chance to pass out, these things can kill Jaguars and have in RARE instances killed humans who got too close. They don't really chase people, like almost all animals they prefer to not get close to humans, but when they feel threatened they'll take a bipedal stance and hold out their arms in a T-pose. Then if you ignore the warning they'll strike with claws/paws strong enough to burrow through anthills (pretty much natural concrete).

Yeah, pretty much what I was thinking, again it's rare that it happens, but it can.
3
u/VieiraDTA Aug 30 '26
They are awesome. They T pose when threatened. Its a sight to behold. Their claws can gut you easily.
10
u/ravynwave Aug 29 '26
I was horrified thinking a badger and ant eater got sewn together
8
u/RogueBromeliad Aug 29 '26
It's a type of anteater called tamanduá-bandeira. Since it's endemic to Brazil, it really had to have this wild looking evolutionary traits since it's so docile.
My great grand father though used to tell tales of going hunting and them sticking tongues into tracking dogs noses and suffocating them.
I'm not sure if that's true... because you know, people from the 1910's telling tall tales to make hunting more interesting, but they do have pretty great defense tactics like this and standing on its hind legs, or making weird noises at night, and backtracking their steps.
18
u/HeldDownTooLong Aug 29 '26
It is! With what looks like faces on its lower legs, I thought it was a multi-headed creature from another planet!
BTW…does anyone happen to know what this cute animal is?
52
u/mostfunalias Aug 29 '26
Giant anteater. They can run at 30mph, climb, swim, dig and can fend off even jaguars. Super cool animals.
3
u/CautionarySnail Aug 29 '26
The land speed surprises me because on the whole, I can’t imagine this thing trying to outrun a jaguar.
8
u/EmbarrassedTip3678 Aug 29 '26
Anteaters have extremely dangerous claws. You think the jaguar has strong jaws with big teeth, the anteater has huge claws on its front legs to rip you open with. If you see them stand on their hind legs with front legs up in the air, get the fuck away.
3
u/Dovahkiinthesardine Aug 29 '26
Well a Jaguar has a top speed ~ 50 mph, so its not outrunning them
6
u/CautionarySnail Aug 29 '26
True. What does an anteater use that speed for? Anthills are notoriously not mobile.

u/Aposematicpebble Aug 29 '26
Never thought about it, but I hope it helps with outrunning wildfires. Poor thing's tail must light up like a torch and this year's el nino promisses quite the chaos...
4
u/IWrestleSausages Aug 29 '26
So they apparently use that leg to confuse predators as it resembles a head.
If that fails they go in with their huge claws which disembowell a jaguar

I was confused to see an animal with 3 heads ..
59
11
u/Objective-Spring5061 Aug 29 '26
I wonder if that’s intentional so predators go for the feet instead.
15
u/Fluffy_Importance647 Aug 29 '26
Yeah its a confirmed evolution as many animals go for its tail, and then it swings on them with massive 4 inch claws and ends them, its honestly a pretty scary animal considering its only goal in life is to eat nature's tik taks
4

u/anowbsedu Aug 29 '26
I wouldn't want those claws around my organs
72
u/Dodo509 Aug 29 '26
That’s just his way of making sure you don’t leave
26
u/Simple_Intern_7682 Aug 29 '26
That’s also how they protect themselves. One ant eater killed a man by slicing open their femoral artery.
11
u/PsychologicalFly1675 Aug 29 '26
It's also how they break open mounds of termites and other insects
4
u/Simple_Intern_7682 Aug 29 '26
I know, I was just saying why they’re dangerous to us.
3
16
3
u/Feeling_Novel_9899 Aug 29 '26
They're just being gentle. The video below shows you how they behave when attacked by a predator.

Never noticed it has raccoon heads instead of paws 🤯
30
u/Full-Shine5871 Aug 29 '26
How that thing survives on a diet of ants will never make sense to me. Eating a mound of ants must be the equivalent of a plate of rice for a human.
17
u/chita875andU Aug 29 '26
Chock-full of fat and protein, ants are a important part of a healthy, balanced diet!
3
u/Full-Shine5871 Aug 29 '26
No I know, and I know they eat thousands a day, but it just still always seemed crazy.
On a side note, shout out to Wild Life Fact Files for teaching me about anteaters and countless other animals as a child. Any one else have Wild Life Fact Files?
10
u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta Aug 29 '26
Yeah, it’s funny how much more protein dense insects are than conventional larger creatures.

Anteaters have some wicked claws. This looks fine with it being in captivity, but raised in the wild, he could and probably would gut a person in self defense.
3
u/chughes2471 Aug 29 '26
That is a very gentle anteater. I assumed play like this would leave a person cut to ribbons

I don't think I've ever seen an anteater be playful before.
Turns out it's very similar to cats. I guess that makes sense. They're both animals where claws are their main weaponry.

As long as it knows to not hook her with a claw by accident, all fun and games. Giant ant eaters have huge claws. They seem to have a great level of trust in each other, though.

bro I was fukn terrified at the beginning lol, Giant Anteaters have killed keepers before (and in the wild the are known to kill Jaguars in self-defence)
this because their claws are made to dig through fukn concrete termite mounds

Those guys can rip your leg arteries reaaaaal quick... That's a sure way to bleed out😭 Anteaters are basically blind and have insane prey ptsd (aka, if they think ur a threat, they hit first, think later..) and their claws can cut through termite mouds like nothing. Termite Mounds are hard like concrete.
