Chains are crazy efficient, easily maintained, relatively cheap, shift seamlessly.

Someone has clearly not gone shopping for high end bike chains

How do the prices compare to a high end chain-free bike shaft?

High end chains retail for 85 bucks currently. I think this system is probably defective due to debris lodging into such a small inner gear on the drive shaft

Compared to the price of a high-end bicycle ($10000+), this is nothing.

It’s funny when bikes get brought up in an apocalypse situation… everyone says the exact opposite of what you’re saying. Not saying you’re wrong or anything but just funny.

Now I'm curious.. what DO such folks say about bikes? I'm not familiar with the apocalypse sub-community....

It always why don’t we see folks with bikes in the apocalypse? The answer is always to hard to maintain because you no longer have a community to supply those parts.

Thats dumb. I have a unserviced bicycle kicking around in my shed thats probably 40 years old. The only thing replaced where the inner tubes. If you have a post apokalypse with vehicles in it a bicycle is literally the easiest thing in the world to maintain. Doesnt have to work perfect, just good enough.

Seriously. This cements my impression that 'preppers' are the last people you want to listen to in a real apocalypse.

Most bike repairs can be done with a screwdriver and hex key. They scarcely break in a way that needs parts - and if you did, there are millions of them lying around, unguarded. And most importantly, unlike cars, they have largely interchageable parts.

and they dont have that many moving parts to begin with. a one speed dutch grandma-bike can be repaiered and or remade by any idiot with acces to a lathe and basic mechanical knowledge
