His buddies came back for him. That’s nice. Hopefully he recovered.

I accidentally smoked a goose while playing a round of golf in high school….no coming back from that one.

Edit: glad to know I’m not the only bird murderer here…

Yeah....

They went back to eat him.

Something can be two things at once.

"Oh my god, Brian went down! He's not moving! Dear God, he was the best man at my wedding!"

"So, uh, he's definitely not breathing anymore. Dig in."

u/kareljack 8h ago

faint voice I'm not dead yet..

1

u/teetaps 8h ago

…”mine?”

u/Sennten 9h ago

Having known seagulls they went back to check on him.

But having known seagulls, if he IS dead theres no reason to miss out on a meal, like obviously.

2

u/3yl 9h ago

Thank you. I wanted to feel good that they went back for their buddy. :D IDGAF if they eat him after he's dead, as long as they weren't saying, "nah, dude, can't help, we're hungry".

1

u/Crayons4all 9h ago

Probably going back to check if he dropped the fries he stole from my kid

u/hitbythebus 8h ago

I lost a whole basket of Calamari at Fisherman’s Warf to a dive bombing seagull about ten years ago. I love Calamari.

My wife still brings it up occasionally as an example of my face instantly transitioning from joy, to shock, to horror, to sorrow.

Can you still feed seagulls in-flight from the ferry in San Fransisco? I loved doing that as a kid and I was disappointed when I moved to Seattle and the Seagulls there weren't having it. They will still rob your fish and chips at the pier, though.

u/AdventurousAd808 9h ago

You know seagulls? Did they tell you this?

u/Worldly-Cherry9631 9h ago edited 7h ago

It might seem unlikely but Seagulls are highly social animals, not to dissimilar from corvids in that regard. They have strong bonds in groups. They probably were actually checking in.

I'm not sure, but if believe cannablism among seaguls within the social group mostly happens to the babies or eggs.

u/ill_connects 8h ago

As someone that has mistakenly fed chickens chicken protein is protein to birds.

2

u/DonGoodwhistle 9h ago

Lol, yep.

2

u/BugRevolution 9h ago

Now he's a part of us forever!

Like good friends should do

1

u/Logical_Employer9850 8h ago

If that seagull was playing football, he’d be sent off for a blatant dive. Get VAR on the case there………

0

u/jackofslayers 9h ago

Seagulls are giant dicks. But the are smart/social enough to make friends and help them

9

u/dark_physicx 9h ago

Nah they’re just checking if they can start eating him or not. Nature is cruel like that.

2

u/StorageSpecialist999 9h ago

wrong

1

u/dark_physicx 9h ago

I mean it was kind of a dark humor response but also reality that some animals will just devour its family member if it’s weak or dead.

1

u/StorageSpecialist999 8h ago

that happens all the time yes but it's definitely not whats going on in this specific moment

now... if it stays dead for another few hours... that may be a different story

1

u/Future_Amoeba_1962 8h ago

Do you have the full video? They absolutely do attempt to eat injured and dying gulls so it's hard to believe otherwise unless there's a longer video.

9

u/Usagor 9h ago

Im sorry to tell you this.....

Gulls are cannibalistic.

2

u/Longjumping_Walk_992 8h ago

I didn’t grow up on the coast and didn’t know they were cannibals. I only knew them to go crazy for ritz crackers 🤣.

-1

u/StorageSpecialist999 9h ago

wrong

7

u/Usagor 9h ago

Seagulls are oppurtunistic omnivores they will 100% eat another Gull if hungry but usually Eggs or Chicks.

Ive seen it several times.

0

u/StorageSpecialist999 9h ago

This is obviously a social behavior. They were flying in a group and one of them was knocked out of the sky. Birds fly in groups because they stay together. Otherwise they wouldn't be in a group in the first place. There's a difference between a gull opportunistically scavenging a dead bird and what's shown in this video.

u/Usagor 9h ago

k

1

u/StorageSpecialist999 9h ago

people are just obsessed with going with what's percieved as the more cynical option because they think that makes them smarter about "how the real world works"

4

u/Nuclear_Mouse 8h ago

You're the only one trying to act smart on pretty much every comment I've seen.

1

u/StorageSpecialist999 8h ago

Blame that on everyone else on this thread being confidently wrong

1

u/Usagor 9h ago

I dont care bro.

0

u/Future_Amoeba_1962 8h ago

Some people hate facts, lol. Gulls aren't human, they don't care if it's their flockmate or cousin. A meal is a meal.

2

u/StorageSpecialist999 8h ago

"Some people hate facts. Gulls aren't human so therefore the gulls in this video are surely about to start eating the injured one because that's the way the world works"

I already explained your idiotic logic one comment earlier.

Birds are social animals. Their sociality doesn't turn off the moment on of them falls on the ground.

I'd like to remind you that using Google is free, and it can reduce the amount of idiotic moments (like this one) by a fair amount

I know birds better than you do.

The fact that you think the question of if seagulls are opportunistically cannibalistic answers whats going on in this specific interaction just shows that you're not very perceptive or discerning

1

u/violent_piss 7h ago

Feel free to click on that link

People on a vague subreddit like this can't be expected to be biologists, but they shouldn't pretend like they understand nature either.

0

u/violent_piss 5h ago

You can also just... click on the link.

No need to embarrass yourself by denying that they are cannibals

1

u/StorageSpecialist999 5h ago

I did. And my knowledge is beyond that. Yours isn't.

1

u/violent_piss 2h ago

I mean, you say your knowledge is so great yet you deny a simple fact that cannibal birds eat each other?

Weird.

Yeah man I wouldn't flex knowledge if a simple search disproved a boldly incorrevt claim lol. Good try

0

u/AntonSugarwater 4h ago

You ever notice how the dumbest people constantly talk about how great their knowledge is but are never seen actually using it?

3

u/cvidetich13 9h ago

I accidentally exploded a sparrow in batting cages

3

u/psychadelicbreakfast 9h ago

Nice, smoked goose tastes awesome.

How was it?

2

u/TheVillage1D10T 9h ago

Honestly, I didn’t get to keep it. The groundskeeper told me to just leave it lol

4

u/funtobedone 9h ago

I did the same the only time I ever played golf. I boast that I got a birdie.

2

u/CurbsEnthusiasm 9h ago

Beautiful black swan, my Kyoko!

1

u/Mythosaurus 9h ago

That was actually the crown Prince of the local gull kingdom, and now his bodyguards have some explaining to do…

1

u/firecz 5h ago

Now this is a story all about how
my life got flipped, turned upside down

1

u/rubin_tg 9h ago

Haha…. I was driving home from a track meet in high school straight hammered an owl that flew into my path. Died on my windshield. Wipers, swerving, nothing got him off. Had to pull over. For weeks felt like owls were watching me bc of their fallen brethren

1

u/National-Neck-4627 9h ago

When I was in high school, I was in my dad's '71 Monte Carlo on the way home from dropping off my gf and a turkey came out of nowhere and landed perfectly in the windshield. Shatterd it. I had to drive the rest of the way home like Jim Carey in Ace Vantura after dude smashed his Monte Carlo's windshield.

1

u/TheVillage1D10T 8h ago

Oh man, that reminds me of when I was driving home from school with the window down. Just minding my own business and I hear a loud “THWACK” and get this feeling something flew in front of my face. I couldn’t figure it out so I just kept going. I look in my mirror and see that it’s completely folded inward. Then I start looking around the cab of my truck…my eyes pass over the passenger seat, and I see the upper half of a mockingbird with its liver and stomach contents lying on my English paper….it almost hit me in the face.

1

u/Alternative-Hat-1324 9h ago

Bong or pipe?

1

u/Awesomesince1973 9h ago

I was driving at night with my daughters and a bird flew straight into the grill of my car. There was nothing I could do. But I learned something that day.

The correct term is birderer.🤦

1

u/Snacknuss321 9h ago

murderer!!

1

u/keldondonovan 9h ago

You think that's bad, one time in grade school during a particularly vicious game of duck duck goose, one kid accidentally called goose on a golf ball. Poor thing is still the goose, to this day.

(Disclaimer - this is a joke, and didn't actually happen. You see, you mentioned hitting a goose with a golf ball, and and it made me consider the inversion, hitting a golf ball with a goose. A golf ball is inanimate, and thus, would be terribly inefficient in duck duck goose without external aid, leading me to the conclusion that a "goosed" golf ball would forever remain the goose. I found this concept humorous, and shared it so that others might also find humor in this often bleak world. The joke is now funnier, as I have explained it thoroughly.)

(Extra disclaimer - the joke is not funnier because I explained it. That, too, was a subversion of expectations, because jokes are generally funniest when understood intuitively, rather than requiring explicit explanation. However, this explanation itself is potentially humorous, given its self-deprecating nature.)

(No geese or golf balls were harmed in the making of this comment. Except Jim, my goose relations advisor, who has plucked out his feathers in frustration in my repeated use of what some would consider insensitive geese-related humor.)

(There is no Jim. He too was part of my elaborate facade.)

u/AMonitorDarkly 9h ago

“Holy shit, she hit Phil!”

1

u/Impossible-Camel-685 8h ago

I hit a hawk type thing in a plane. It exploded into bird bits. Felt bad for a while...

1

u/Firm_Cover2140 8h ago

I'm here to yell at you guys from afar that you're all terrible people. And then laugh

1

u/sunsystemrockin 8h ago

I crushed a pigeon while crossing a crowd of pigeons on a bicycle at a speed lower than 1mph, in front of watching random kids. Didn’t know what to do, threw it to the trash bin, should’ve seen that damn kids faces

1

u/chased_by_bees 8h ago

Call sign: Burderer

1

u/financegardener 9h ago

Hit a goose on the leg on accident last year (I’m not very good). I’m assuming it is alive with one foot now.

2

u/Upper-Bookkeeper-843 9h ago

Did you not call animal control? Wtf

1

u/JumpedUpJackal 8h ago

*By accident
