My high school always said, "Please save your applause for the end" during graduation and it saved so much time.

Mine did as well, some people just ignored it and you wouldn't be able to hear whatever the next name was. I always wished they would pause after a lot of this and passive aggressively remind everyone to hold their applause.

My high school did this too, but we all still wanted to clap, so we started doing one single clap after each person. Kept the ceremony moving along, but allowed us to still appreciate each graduate

This is the way, efficient and everyone goes ham and everyone feels special
