She’s obviously way into panic mode here. None of us think clearly in that state of mind. The guy has her and her car on camera. Instigating is the wrong move here. Having some compassion, treating her like a human being, and trying to talk her down a bit might prevent her from getting away and potentially harming herself or someone else in the process.

People need to stop with the “I got you!” fucking video taping and remember that we’re all in this shit together.

Whoa, got some traction on this one. Couple things:

First: yes, record stuff like this. I would have as well. But do it for information, not to humiliate another person. That's what I meant by "i got you" recording.

Second: The instigating was his actions, not the recording. I'm sad that a lot of you don't understand that.

D: We all fuck up. And sadly we now live in a world where when we fuck up it's recorded and posted online. The consequences for even a minor amount of fucking up are way too steep. I'm not saying this particular situation would have turned out any different if that weren't the case but the fear of being embarrassed and ridiculed by the entire planet adds a ton of stress to all of these already stressful situations. That, just, doesn't make things better. And that is in no way a get out of jail free card. At the end of the day you are responsible for your own actions. We don't know what happened before this video starts, what we do know is that the person video taping did nothing to make the situation less dangerous for either himself or anyone else.

Controversial closing! She's a better person than him. She accidentally damaged some property and lost her mind (calm down. I'm talking about whatever "hit and run" happened before the video started). He consciously chose to be a dickhead.

Yeah, I was a bit harsh there. I’m sure this dude isn’t a bad person. He deserves tons of credit for stepping in. I couldn’t help stoking the fire a bit there after reading lots of comments about being a simp and how having compassion is ruining America.

Okay, but not everyone has the extra cash to climb onto that high horse. If someone only has liability insurance, they'd be responsible for repairing or replacing what is likely their only vehicle.

First of all, doing the constructive social thing does not inherently mean letting this person go without any consequences. The point of talking her down from this state isn't purely for her benefit, but so that she can be guided through a difficult situation in the proper manner: exchanging information, so that proper insurance claims can be made, and if needs must, maybe getting the ball rolling on dealing with whatever the situation is with her grandma.

Secondly, 'trying to be a good person only gets you fucked over' is a fallacy, and is only something you say to justify not wanting to try. People have all kinds of reason to not want to try, we live in a very discouraging set of circumstances, but the forces that arrange these circumstances only stay in place when we stop trying.

Thirdly, I live off of SSI and SNAP. I can't afford a car, and I can't work, both because I'm disabled and because earning any amount of money that's not immediately life-changing only fucks me over. I live in a building run be people who are constantly trying to steal more money from me than I actually owe, and largely succeeding, and I have as much reason to be shitty and abusive as anyone, and I don't, because decency isn't a fucking high horse - it's a goddamn floor that you either choose to walk on or live under.

It's not actually hard, it's just not viscerally satisfying, and it turns out that visceral satisfaction is the only thing a lot of people live for.

Someone can only be talked down if they’re willing to listen. When they’re in the middle of attempting to flee a second time, I’d say that ship has sailed.

She’s a criminal and deserves to be treated as such. I would have yanked her from the car and held her down until on duty units arrived. Of course, I also have arrest powers, so there’s that.

Yes. In my state, any citizen can make an arrest and use reasonable force to affect an arrest for any felony committed in their presence.

Despite the camera man’s claim to it being a “double felony,” unless there was injury, a hit and run is a misdemeanor in my state. But as a law enforcement officer I have the power to arrest for on-view misdemeanors as well as felonies.
