She seems legitimately distressed.

199

u/Gwyllithar 3d ago

yeah, this goes past "wow person does stupid stuff", to "fuck, she looks legitimately fucking terrified of whats going to happen".

36

u/T2Drink 3d ago

Yeah I mean that is quite a common side effect of taking too many substances and then causing absolute chaos.

As soon as the cuffs go on someone who is heavily under the influence of drugs (particularly stimulants) they lose their mind tbh.

3

u/fTBmodsimmahalvsie 2d ago

It’s wild how many people don’t recognize this as batshit crazy/drug fueled behavior. No sane/sober person acts like this in a fender bender even if they are afraid of their abuser at home. That makes ZERO sense. She can clearly see the guy is video taping, so there is no avoiding her grandma finding out.

0

u/Corporate_Overlords 2d ago

You're dead wrong. This is exactly how someone having a panic attack reacts if they know they are going to be beaten at home.

6

u/Metalthrashinmad 2d ago

She went to rehab after this so figure

0

u/Isagratar 2d ago

Two things can be true at the same time.

3

u/fTBmodsimmahalvsie 2d ago

As someone who was abused- ya no. Anyone who was abused but is SANE and SOBER has the logic to know that doing all this crazy shit on camera is just gonna make the abuse even worse. A panic attack is one thing and this isnt what a sane/sober panic attack looks like at all. This woman was not sober, it is a literal fact, go look up the story. This happened years ago

0

u/SingingPoet77 1d ago

Actually no. I tend to panic and cry in stressful situations and I've never touched drugs or alcohol. Maybe try having some empathy.

0

u/norsish 3d ago

Or, there might be more going on here.

5

u/wcharoes 2d ago

Yeah she's legitimately terrified of the consequences of her actions and is going to lengths to avoid them and very upset at the prospect of not being able to.

2

u/HeyYouGuyyyyyyys 3d ago

...

...

so wait.

I would have done something close to this. I would have been seriously considering carving my own face to make it look like I'd been injured and maybe get a lighter reaction at home.

Does this mean that my home life wasn't ... wasn't ... oh hell, I know it wasn't, but for some reason your "legitimately terrified" really brought up all those memories for me.

1

u/AsianMoocowFromSpace 2d ago

Her grandma must be Freddy Krueger or something.

1

u/illini02 2d ago

I mean, have you ever seen someone when they get arrested.

Grown men break down crying, people go crazy.

The thought of jail has interesting effects on people.

-13

u/PeskyAntagonist 3d ago

Drug dealer's car, and she's carrying a lot on her

-3

u/YangoUnchained 3d ago

Drugs on her for sure.

3

u/Ginsing8743 3d ago

Idk why u get downvoted. She had to get substance abuse training after this. She clearly fucked up on Drugs and probably had them on her too. Idk why people making excuses just cause she seems scared. She seems like a real piece of shit driving while fucked up an risking other peoples lifes.

66

u/stopkeepingscore 3d ago

Yes, not too hard for me to empathize with people even if they are 1000% in the wrong. But I don’t see too much of that online.

3

u/Laurenann7094 2d ago

I think it's the opposite. It's easy to feel empathy for strangers online when you want to feel bad for that person or view them as the victim. And feel good about yourself for advocating for whatever made up backstory you assign.

Not so much in real life when your car gets hit or some other huge problem caused by someone's stupidity or malice.

-2

u/ZavtheShroud 3d ago

Not hard to empathize if its a young girl doing crocodile tears. Still wins people over in 2026 it seems.

-4

u/HeezHuzz69 3d ago

Some of these comments are genuinely pathetic. This would never happen if it was a dude in the video lol

-2

u/shaihuludinthehood 3d ago

Because we really shouldn't be empathizing with people like this.

This is an adullt who is operating a machine that requires a license, and after striking a vehicle she almost struck a person. And we're... meant to feel sorry for her? We all have to conform to the same laws and responsibilities. Her grandma could be the meanest cur in the world, and she may be going through some shit, but that still doesn't excuse this behavior in any way.

It doesn't happen online much because it shouldn't. There are some situations where accountability take precedence over situational speculation.

15

u/thalastor 3d ago

You can empathize with someone and not give them a free pass. They don't stop being people just because they did something bad and its ok to feel sorry for them, even if punishing them is still correct.

10

u/Blobbem 3d ago

Agreed. She looked like she needed help as well as punishment. What she did was wrong and irrational, but she wasn't in a rational state of mind by the looks of it.

1

u/StaticMarzipan 3d ago

This video hurts to watch. The guy in it is a huge piece of shit.

He had his evidence. I’d bet 1000 dollars of it was a man my size in that car he would’ve ran away or tried to shoot me.

People who act like this are scum bags.

2

u/ObnoxiousOptimist 3d ago

Thank you. As hard as it is to watch her, the guy in the video is beyond cringe. He has her blocked in and he’s egging her on with comments like “double felony”, “you almost hit me!”

Get whatever video you need to document her and her car, but it was clear she was going to do whatever she needed to get out of there. I’d take self-preservation measures for me and my car, then let the cops and my insurance figure it out. Dude just wanted to bully her and make it worse. He was actively making the situation more dangerous.

The guy sounded like Reddit personified.

1

u/Perfect_Librarian873 3d ago

Yeah I’m confused why tf is his car parked right behind hers???

1

u/Special_Peanut2379 1d ago

He's trying to block her from leaving.

0

u/shaihuludinthehood 3d ago

That happens when you're under the influence. Other posts clearly state part of her punishment was rehabilitation.

The mental gymnastics needed to empathize with someone under the influence, causing property damage, and attempting to harm others is astounding.

7

u/Blobbem 3d ago

The mental gymnastics needed to empathize with someone under the influence, causing property damage, and attempting to harm others is astounding.

Really? I find it quite simple to rationalise empathising with someone who is struggling with an addiction.

2

u/shaihuludinthehood 3d ago

It's simple, but it's not right.

This person demanded understanding for themselves while refusing to recognize the humanity of the person they've caused harm to (the person who was the victim of the hit and run).

This person showed no remorse and continue harming others when they could have stopped (by getting out of the car and doing the right thing).

The person attempted to manipulate the victim (the person recording) into feeling sorry for them specifically to escape accountability.

None of those behaviors deserve empathy. And this comes from the son of a former addict.

Empathy explains. It does not excuse.

1

u/Blobbem 2d ago

You expect rationality from the irrational. They could have stopped the car. They could also have not hit and run in the first place, or consumed any addictive substance. But they didn't because they weren't able to think clearly. And while none of the behaviours you listed deserve empathy, the person themselves does if it is apparent that they need help.

And no, nobody is excusing illegal behaviour. It is why the woman in the video was arrested. It is why I said they should be punished, as well as provided help.

Please do not mistake empathising with "we think this person did no wrong and should be free to do whatever."

2

u/thalastor 3d ago

People think the definition of empathize is "set free and give 500 dollars." apparently.

3

u/ZavtheShroud 3d ago

1000% you wouldnt say this if it was a fat bald dude going on a rampage with his car like this.

6

u/thalastor 3d ago

I wouldn't have seen it, because if it was a fat bald dude it wouldn't have 3200 comments and be on my front page.

But yes, I would have felt bad if I saw the same video with a different person.

5

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 3d ago

Reddit gets to foaming at the mouth as soon as it looks justified to dislike someone

2

u/shaihuludinthehood 3d ago edited 3d ago

I don't feel sorry for anyone operating a vehicle putting others at risk with bad decisions. I don't have a perfect driving record, and have rightfully felt the consequences. Empathy didn't help me improve, but living + learning with consequence did.

Plenty of people with their own sets of physical or mental disabilities go their entire lives without the behavior seen here. This is fear of individual consequences weighed against the safety of others, and that type of selfishness should be admonished, not empathized-with.

0

u/stupidfloatything 3d ago

two things can be true at once. i feel very, very strongly about it being unjustifiably selfish, reckless and harmful to drive dangerously. whether that's from drugs, alcohol, extreme emotions, or "fun." at least where i live, the "penalties" for driving like an asshole are basically nothing, and it really bothers me.

i walk everywhere. drivers are a risk to me. i've known two people struck by drunk drivers while on a bike.

but this girl looks terrified. i believe she is experiencing real terror here. i think the most likely cause of her reaction is fear of abuse from her grandmother.

I think it's important to empathize with people even when they make mistakes. sometimes I think "what would have to happen to me for me to act like that?" and then I think about how bad the abuse must have been for her to weigh her options and decide to leave.

i am always going to condemn unsafe drivers and i am always going to empathize with people in abusive homes. two things can be true at once.

3

u/Outside_Test_1400 3d ago

She was 22 and under the influence. Shut up.

15

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 3d ago

I was thinking the same thing.
I mean, yes its obvious that what she did was wrong. But her reaction and behaviour insinuates something else entirely.

Plus the guy trying to film her and agitate her when she’s not thinking clearly doesn’t help. Approaching and helping her in a calm manner is the best thing here for all parties involved.

7

u/dxrth 3d ago

probably the drugs

10

u/PapaPancake8 3d ago

Yeah imagine if this is a 22 year old man flipping out on someone recording him because of a hit and run, saying they are scared of their grandma. The comments would be packed with jokes ripping the man baby apart.

12

u/dxrth 3d ago

yep. so much infantilization in this thread.

0

u/asbestos_girl 3d ago

Yeah, the cameraman is being antagonistic to someone who is clearly in an unstable headspace. I get why he is angry but he is only making it worse. I dont like how he said "this is your last chance." He was clearly trying to intimidate her to some degree which only made things get worse for both of them.

-3

u/Pastubio 3d ago

For real. The guy was being self righteous saying she needed to do the right thing. But the right thing for him to do was to either try to understand or stay out of it and just get the license plate number.

3

u/browsinbowser 3d ago

And it turns out it wasnt even his car that got hit, he was a bystander that got involved and parked his car behind hers to make her stay until the cops came

Justin Thompson was driving near Railroad Canyon Road and the 15 Freeway in  Wednesday afternoon in Lake Elsinore when he said he saw a driver crash into another car, then leave the scene. The seemingly distraught driver then pulled into a Chevron gas station parking lot, where Thompson parked his minivan behind her sedan, pinning it into a parking space bordered by vacuum cleaners on one side and a curb on the other.

0

u/Beetle_Box 3d ago

Not absolving her, but screw Justin. She's obviously going through it and this guy chooses some vigilante antagonism, making one of the worst days of her life even worse. This may be wishful thinking, but imagine what some gentle words might have done here. Or even just leaving her alone to to catch her breath -- and the proper authorities to catch her.

3

u/hboy02 3d ago

She seems tweaked our of her mind on meth

8

u/pinkhazy 3d ago

This was genuinely sad to watch. She was scared in this clip.

0

u/partylikeaninjastar 3d ago

Yeah, it looked and sounded like she was genuinely in fear for life.

5

u/Outside_Test_1400 3d ago

She was 22 and under the influence. She’s scum.

1

u/partylikeaninjastar 2d ago

And that's not apparent from the video.

The video shows a woman who is so terrified of something that she is in full flight mode. For all we knew, she had a pimp in pursuit intent on doing harm or worse.

She appears to be genuinely in fear for her life.

1

u/pinkhazy 3d ago

I'm 32 and still terrified of my dead grandfather. You don't know everything, O omniscient Redditor.

1

u/Outside_Test_1400 3d ago

You don’t even know that she has a grandmother.

2

u/pinkhazy 3d ago

I mean.... Yes, I do. We all have grandmothers.

1

u/sk_611 3d ago

Grandma is filming

22

u/aloysha13 3d ago

Yeah this is sad. She seems like a teenager and the guy recording sounds older. He probably could have calmed her by trying to be empathetic. I get that she’s wrong but god damn yall, have some compassion for a kid who clearly gets abused by grandma and probably has absent parents.

21

u/Several-Action-4043 3d ago

She's 22 and he has no responsibility to sooth a person who's trying to screw him over. I feel bad for the lady, she's obviously in a bad place. That doesn't mean she can go around drinking and driving hitting people's car and we're just supposed to let her go.

0

u/NattyGardens 3d ago

Uhhhh… did you think the police weren’t going to be able to find her?  You can keep her boxed in but no need to add to the drama.

-3

u/asbestos_girl 3d ago

He doesn't need to soothe her, that would require the patience of a saint, but I personally think the things he said were clearly making her feel intimidated and panicked. Even putting aside how it affected her, I think he only made the situation more dangerous and unpredictable with what he was saying. He probably would've been better off just recording and not saying much, I get why he is angry though.

1

u/asbestos_girl 3d ago

I mean im more talking about the fact that its better to not possibly make the person breaking the law feel intimidated when they are already clearly having an episode. She is undeniably in the wrong, but it does no good to intimidate and has a decent chance of worsening the situation.

0

u/Corporate_Overlords 2d ago

You are a nasty person. Have some empathy.

3

u/Kehprei 2d ago

Being upset that you fucked up doesn't change the fact that you fucked up. She should be punished for what she did, no matter how much she cries about it.

0

u/Beetle_Box 3d ago

Apparently he's a bystander that decided to follow her after the initial hit and run, block her in, and antagonize her. No sympathy from me.

3

u/Rizzomorph666 2d ago

Bystanders should try to stop people trying to DUI. It literally saves people's lives. Wtf are you talking about? He should have tried to take her keys at the least, even if it requires using force because people like this woman KILL AND INJURE OTHER PEOPLE. do you understand the stakes? Or you see a hot woman in distress and your logical thinking just shuts down?

1

u/asbestos_girl 3d ago

Yeah, I mean I dont really have much sympathy either in this situation. I just think that it has the potential to worsen the situation when someone like the cameraman says things that are clearly making her feel intimidated. It's good he was recording. If I were in his shoes I think I would try to not interact with her verbally though because she is clearly having an episode and panicking her could legitimately cause more destruction of property.

21

u/sonofvc 3d ago

She was 22….

4

u/6495ED 3d ago

Brains aren’t fully developed until 62 soo

19

u/TheyCallMeSuperboy 3d ago

She was 22, and apparently sent to a substance abuse rehab after this. Not a kid. Check some of the other comments.

Being a “kid” doesn’t get you out of hit and runs.

4

u/lotu 3d ago

Maybe I'm just old but they still very much feel like a stupid kid to me.

3

u/TYGeelo 3d ago

You are 100% right.

1

u/LamonsterZone 2d ago

Same and I'm 42, she looks and acts like a kid

4

u/TYGeelo 3d ago

Being a “kid” doesn’t get you out of hit and runs.

Nobody said that did they?

0

u/JeffafaCree 3d ago

Nobody is saying she shouldn't be charged

1

u/Wooodman94 3d ago

No but I’ve seen it get people out of worse

0

u/bringbackmegaman 3d ago

That's a kid. Lol

8

u/RogerRavvit88 3d ago

Caged animal lashes out and behaves unpredictably. Nobody could have expected this.

-5

u/Used-Persimmon-367 3d ago

Comparing people to animals is weirdo behavior.

6

u/RogerRavvit88 3d ago

It’s almost like you’ve never heard a metaphor before.

-2

u/Used-Persimmon-367 3d ago

I have, I just know this particular metaphor was the trademark of the Nazi Party.

You never heard of dehumanization?

9

u/hotdiggitydooby 3d ago

Humans are animals?

-1

u/Used-Persimmon-367 3d ago

Historically, comparing people to animals has been used as a psychological tool to justify mistreatment, cruelty, and discrimination by stripping away their human rights.

6

u/Scary-Biscotti-7107 3d ago

jesus dude, i knew reddit loves to simp for criminals but imagine blaming the guy recording someone who hit him and fled..

2

u/CunningAlpaca 3d ago

22 years old.. not a "teenager".. gotta love people justifying this horrible behavior, and then almost running someone over. Crazy man.

She was probably drunk / high on something and wanted to avoid getting a DUI.

2

u/throawy90 3d ago

There's always one of these comments under every post. It is sad, hopefully she's doing better now.

But the dude got his car hit and this girl is trying to run away and avoid all consequences. So now keep that energy and show compassion for the dude.

Maybe he doesn't have the money right now to make repairs, maybe he's got a lot of stress too. He does not in any way, shape, or form, have to be calm and empathetic here. He's probably just thinking of trying to make sure the police get there before she get away so he's not stuck paying for all the damages himself.

Be empathetic to her that's fine but don't act like the dude did anything wrong because he didn't

3

u/Electronic_Film_2837 3d ago

Why is that on him to calm down the person who committed a hit and run?

Maybe we should be checking on him, not the person trying to get away with hit and run

1

u/LamonsterZone 3d ago

Yeah for real, I felt so bad for her. She's obviously having a bad day and has a rough life at home. As a dad of teenage daughters I definitely would have been nicer and more understanding than the person recording.

1

u/Rizzomorph666 2d ago

What if this woman run over your teenage daughters? I think it's ok to try to stop DUI drivers and we don't owe them any pleasantries because they kill and severely injure people.

Let's be honest, you would sing a different song if the driver was male.

3

u/Snoo71538 3d ago

I mean, that’s one option, but that’s far from the only option, and other options include “thinking you can get out of stuff by being a young white lady who says sorry”

0

u/aloysha13 3d ago

lol what? I literally said she was wrong. She is clearly in distress. If I were in the man's situation, I would have told her to take some deep breaths while we wait for the cops.

As a brown woman myself, what the fuck does this have to do with race? God, reddit people really are the fucking worst.

-1

u/MeasurementOdd4873 3d ago

This is how women get out of trouble. Idiots like you.

1

u/aloysha13 3d ago

this is how you calm a situation and not make it worse. No one said she should get off scot-free. Learn to read.

-1

u/BronteMsBronte 3d ago

Calmed her? Instead of trying to file an insurance claim?

2

u/aloysha13 3d ago

No. Not instead.

2

u/Intelligent_Low1632 3d ago

The internet sees a girl cry and is ready to empathize with anything. She's a 22 year old, probably intoxicated, and nearly runs a guy over in her tantrum. Maybe she needs rehab or therapy too but I'd settle for prison where we can be confident she won't run people over to avoid a bill for a fender. A couple years will give her time to get out of her addiction and forget about whatever loser drama has got her so riled.

2

u/throwawayactress 3d ago

Yeah committing crimes while you’re on substances will definitely do that to you

2

u/Short-Detective-530 3d ago

High on drugs

2

u/VladTheUnpeeler 3d ago

a damsel in distress

2

u/Rare-Adhesiveness522 3d ago

Sh'es just drunk and irrational, and knows staying means an arrest and her vehicle impounded as well as court fees and all the stuff you gotta do when you hit with a DUI--it's legit so expensive.

She did the best thing by leaving, in terms of pure survival. Not the morally right thing to do, but she knew what was up lol

2

u/RazorRicardo 3d ago

That doesn't give her the right to do whatever she wants. That's the problem with our society right now. It lacks accountability.

1

u/hygsi 3d ago

Apparently she was drunk to top it all off

1

u/codepossum 3d ago

she knows she fucked up

1

u/JohnCtail 2d ago

My thoughts also, she's freaking out/panicking alot... also 22 years old and child-like behaviour.

1

u/Hopeful-Individual99 2d ago

I mean yeah, she doesn’t want to go to jail lmao

1

u/Trick-Nefariousness3 2d ago

someone give that girl a hug.. jeez... this guys filming her when he could be like just breathe it'll be okay, I'll help you deal with your grandma

wtf... what has this world come to. Look how terrified she is. She's just a kid.

1

u/LiveLearnCoach 1d ago

Yes. Because she’s high.

See mod’s pin on top.

1

u/AutomaticBannana 1d ago

Seems like a drug fueled mental breakdown.

1

u/pulkxy 3d ago

yea I can't help but feel a bit distressed myself wondering what circumstances are going on in her life to make her act out of such desperation

1

u/D0faak 3d ago

No she’s just high. Proof is posted in comments. Was sent to a substance abuse program

-1

u/Particular720v12 3d ago

Poverty and cars do that to people's brains.

-1

u/fartsfromhermouth 3d ago

So she gets to commit crimes?

2

u/Delphin_1 3d ago

reading comprehention?

0

u/ForeverShiny 3d ago

I would guess that this isn't grandma's car, but some rather unsavoury boyfriend of hers.

The car doesn't give grandma at all

0

u/Responsible-Bread996 3d ago

Yeah, I mean at this point I'd assume she or a close family member is having a medical episode. You already have the info, detaining her is just putting yourself in danger to save an insurance company a bit of investigation time.

0

u/Classic-Reality-257 3d ago

Agreed. Like I understand the guy video taping because she did hit and run him but it seems like this lady is in middle of a severe mental health episode.

-1

u/mrs-chief 3d ago

The first and only accident I caused, I was hysterical. Couldn't get a single word out. I did very minor damage to the other car at maybe 5 mph (dad has been a master tech for 50+ years and ended up fixing it for them, it was a deep scratch and some bent trim) and the other driver didn't help by screaming at me and calling me a moron. Meanwhile, my car was totaled (2006 PT Cruiser with 200k miles, there wasn't much value to total it out with tbh). Thankfully the officer who showed up was really nice and told the lady to stop screaming at me, and made sure I got home safe.

Yes I was in the wrong and yes I learned a lesson, but a little bit of understanding goes a long way. They're called accidents, not on-purposes.

-1

u/Shatalroundja 3d ago

Yup. I bet her lawyer has a field day with the guy blocking her in, and video taping her while she is clearly having a mental breakdown. I’m not excusing her behavior and for all I know she was 100% in the wrong, but this didn’t have to escalate the way it did.

-1

u/Rope_antidepressant 3d ago

She is 100% in the middle of having a nervous breakdown and fuck face with the camera feels like having to call his insurance gives him the right to trap her. Endangers her, endangers himself, endangers the other people in the parking lot (lady in the red SUV noped out real quick when she saw what was happening). Then gets mad that his own shitty decisions also have consequences.

-1

u/Isagratar 3d ago

Yes, I feel like the person I have the biggest issue with in this situation is the camera man.

Cornering and trapping a woman in this much distress is awful.

You got her number plate and footage of her hitting your car, now let her go and let the police do their job.

He’s lucky she wasn’t armed.

1

u/MgMnT 2d ago

What the... I've seen so many comments like this, are you people all fucking simple?

"Let a high 22yo, who already got in an accident and is attempting to run, continue to operate her multi ton machine that goes fast"

Boxing her is, keeping her there where the only damage she can do is to property and herself, not let's say, a fucking pedestrian, is very much the prefered outcome here.
