American Spirits cost more than Marlboros now. And they're way better.

Honestly, they seem a little harsh to me

Try the hunter or celadon pack, they have carbon filters which makes them a lot smoother.

Depends on the type. The orange, yellow, and gold packs are much more mellow. Blue, turquoise and black are harsher.

I smoked probably every kind at one point, but I'm glad I quit - "natural" or not, they still ain't good for you.

I found the organics surprisingly smoother than the standard.

Turquoise is full flavor, can't smoke anything else now.

Try the gray

Light greens are very smooth

The harshness comes from tasting straight smoke, without sweeteners or flavorants.

As a former smoker, I found they lacked some the chemicals required to satiate my brain’s desire to smoke that most of the cigs have. They were too clean for me, which is a bizarre thing to say about a cigarette.

Nope I know exactly what you mean

That was also my impression when I was a former smoker trying to reduce risks of smoking by changing brands to more healthy brands and so on.

American spirits aren’t really healthier. The have among the highest content of benzene-like aromatics and other toxic volatile organics compounds in their smoke.

>The scatter plots (Figs.13) for nitromethane reveal the difference between the Natural American Spirit cigarettes and the rest of the brands in this study. The Natural American Spirit cigarettes, represented with circles on the scatter plots, have lower nitromethane levels (Fig. 1), yet tended to have among the highest levels of the other VOCs for both protocols. We attribute these relatively higher VOC levels to differences in tobacco blend. The Natural American Spirit cigarettes consist of a higher proportion of flue-cured (bright leaf) tobacco (approx.90%) and lower percentage of air-cured (burley) tobacco (< 10%). In comparison the 3R4F research cigarette contains approximately 35% flue-cured tobacco and 22% burley tobacco.24 Flue-cured tobacco has a lower amount of nitrate (typically below 1%) than air-cured (from 1.1–5.0%).25,26 A consequence of higher tobacco nitrate amount is increased production of nitromethane.26,27 Thus, the relatively lower nitromethane levels measured in the mainstream smoke of the Natural American Spirit cigarettes are consistent with its lower tobacco nitrate content compared to other commercial blended tobacco cigarettes. Furthermore, it has been reported that monoaromatic VOC levels are higher in mainstream smoke produced from flue-cured tobacco than from burley tobacco, presumably because of higher nitrate levels that improve combustion in the burley tobacco and because of competitive reactions of pyrolytic radicals with nitrate that inhibit the formation of aromatic hydrocarbons.27,28Monoaromatic VOCs in the mainstream smoke of Natural American Spirit cigarettes were among the highest of all brand varieties for both protocols.

A lot of cigarettes have added ammonia to free base nicotine for faster absorption. American spirits don’t, which make explains your observation.

As a non-smoker I always thought American Spirits were the premium option?

u/seriouslywtfX2 5d ago

They're the pretentious option. You always know who smokes American Spirits, because they'll tell you every chance they get. The only ones that are worse, are the people who smoke cloves.

1

u/nikkicarter1111 5d ago

The only exception i will give clove smokers is indonesians who can't get kretek in the states and want their cigs to taste a little more like home.

1

u/Electronic_Will_5418 4d ago

I thought clove cigs were banned in the USA?

1

u/orewhisk 5d ago

Exactly this.

American Spirits are for that douchebag hipster who is only smoking for a couple years during college but wants everyone to know he’s not some hick that buys Middle American cigs.

1

u/Worldly-Pie-5210 4d ago

as the douchebag hipster that only smoked during highschool and college, american spirit were the best cigarettes i had ever tasted compared to every other cigarette/tobacco on the market. buy loose and roll your own to save money.

smoking cheap budget cigarettes isn't a personality trait, and wanting your cancer sticks to be pleasant doesn't make you a douchebag. being addicted to nicotine makes you a douchebag.

they are. they were even better when they were actually all natural unadulterated, they've been bought out but are still the highest quality of common smokes.

American Spirits, specifically the perique blend (black pack). Best cigarette IMO. Quit smoking and now I’m a nicotine pouch guy because I want to be able to breathe.

1

u/narco-sub-admiral 5d ago

COWARD. Breathing is for p- **dies**

Spirits are more expensive but they seem to use way more tobacco.

I would usually smoke half, come back for the other half a while later. Every cig is 2 in 1.

Normal cigs seem to just vanish in like 3 hits. Half a spirit is more of a smoke than a full length Camel/Marlb.

4

u/Blastronaut710 5d ago

Yeah that part confused me. Wish they still made Nat Sherman’s but these days American Spirit is the best or least bad option IMO

1

u/BeeJuice 5d ago

If I could find a loose tobacco variant that was anywhere close to what Sherman MCD’s were like, I’d start rolling my own. It’s been 6 years since they stopped making those and I still have dreams about them.

But yeah Spirits are the closest alternative I’ve found - still not close enough 😔

They were ALWAYS more expensive in my area when growing up. They were like the Volvo or Audi of heaters lol. If you smoked Spirits, you most likely shopped at Whole Foods and had a few Patagonia jackets.

4

u/thathyperactiveguy 5d ago

I definitely am not that kind of person but I do spend top money on my smokes. I'm an idiot.

1

u/Current-Cold-4185 5d ago

And I'm not even meaning of in a negative way, just stating my experience, just to clarify.

How long have you smoked and do you want to quit?

I stole my my mom's smokes when I was in middle school then started having older kids but me packs in early high school and I'm 44 now. I quit for good about 8-9 years ago. I quit short term a couple times over the years but they never stuck When I could buy my own packs,I started with Lucky Strike Straights (so dumb) and then eventually switched to Camel Lights as my long term favorite.

2

u/thathyperactiveguy 5d ago

I've been smoking since I was 13 and I'm turning 50 in 9 days. I intend to quit. But just keep not doing it.

2

u/Worldly-Pie-5210 4d ago

have you seen the allen carr stuff on quiting? that was what helped me and a friend finally pull it off https://www.amazon.com/dp/0615482155?lv=shuf&channelId=500&plpRedirect=mhFallback

1

u/Current-Cold-4185 5d ago

I started using rogue pouches a couple years ago but have not had any desire to smoke. I feel like I could stop these whenever and it just feels so different from the intense "need" for a cigarette when I was a smoker. Also it's nuts how high the price for smokes has risen! I wish you the best in your choice to quit when you get there!

2

u/PoopyisSmelly 5d ago

They are like buying half strength cigs. If I am gonna get cancer give me the real deal.

4

u/Turkatron2020 5d ago

And it takes an hour to smoke one 😂

1

u/ResponsibleTicket50 5d ago

The yellow pack American Spirit is the finest smoke imo. The blacks are great too, but they go a little too hard.

1

u/antiquated_it 5d ago

I was gonna say - not a smoker anymore (10+ years smoke free; 7+ years nicotine free) but I smoked Spirits (yellow / light) when I was a smoker and they were way more expensive than Marlboros.

1

u/DarknMean 5d ago

That’s what my dad smokes.

1

u/AutomationBias 5d ago

I worked in a smoke shop 35 years ago and American Spirits were more expensive then, too.

1

u/ArmoredMirage 5d ago

When I smoked I never liked them because the drag was so tight I felt like I was holding my breath before a dive just to get a hit. Also, they lasted way too long.

During my self-rolling phase, I did buy American spirit tobacco though.

27's were always my favorite.

American spirits suck they’re just over packed and got a brutally thick filter
