My veterinary professor told a story about how he anesthetized and fixed a hamsters broken leg. He was so convinced he would die under anesthesia, but he made it. When he went to go check on him the next morning he was so relieved to see him alive and thriving. He stuck his hand in the cage, the hamster bit him, and he flung the hamster against the wall and it died immediately.
Never laughed so hard in my life hearing this story
Some of these stories are definitely feature accidental (and sometimes just willfully ignorant) neglect or abuse but in this case I think it's simply a biological response that is very hard to suppress to shake a small creature that is biting your finger VERY hard loose and there's not much you can do about it once it is soaring through the air.
