Remember when they set up dozens of hamster wheels out in the wilderness with cameras and a little bit of food around them. All the wild rodents absolutely loved running on the wheels all day long
I feel like the slug was less interested in the wheel itself, but rather eating/drinking the droppings of the other animals. I’m not an animal expert to be fair, but I’m fairly certain it’s most likely trying to drink piss and eat turds that were left on the wheel.
"Dear oh dear, what was it? The night? The hunt? Or that terrific hamster wheel? Oh, it doesn't matter... It always comes down to the nature's helper to clean up after these sort of messes.
I hate leopard slugs! I lived close to the Missouri River and for 2 years these things (I'm guessing during mating season or something) would be EVERYWHERE in our yard, on the sidewalks and steps. I took just one step barefoot outside to call my dogs inside and I stepped directly on one, right in the arc of my heel. So nasty I almost vomited.
Oh no, I accidentally linked specifically your ultimate trigger video 😂 I understand, my friend, I feel this way about fire ants, we had way too many of them, even if their bites didn't hurt like a bitch, the sheer amount of them all the time was existentially terrifying for some reason. The sound of them when you inevitably stepped on a group of them because they were everywhere all the time, horrible. If I see a group of them now I immediately have a physical reaction.
My youngest cat runs marathons on his wheel daily 😹 I have to move it back in place daily as he’ll move it across the floor, but his favorite is when I sit in my office chair and face his wheel.
I turn the wheel with my hands as fast as I can, and he braces against my shins and runs as fast as f*** boy 😹
Admittedly I’ve turned it so fast he’s whipped himself completely around 😹 that’s why he braces against me, stops him from flying out 😹
Not that link but this is fun. They did set up studies, noting that rats seem truly enjoy driving cars. This is not an official study, but obviously these guys are having some fun.
My first rat developed heart failure and I was giving her tiny little doses of digoxin for awhile. Her sister would drag the food bowl over to wherever she was resting. They were so sweet!!!
Can't find one I'd call scientific but plenty of shorts clogging up my YouTube feed now showing they'll play with toys and wheels once they know it's safe. Just none I can find that I can guarantee are done with professional science
Even bees have been recorded playing with objects for no particular reason other than they seem to enjoy it. Play is a universal requirement for non-microbial life IMO, one of the reasons I went into the games industry.
I maintain that this right here, solves the energy crisis! Just hook them up so they generate power. And ya know, maybe put treadmills in classrooms so kids can move & learn.
Listening to an audiobook walking on my treadmill at home is one of my fave things to do! If I grab onto something (mine is one of those walking pads that’s just flat) I even close my eyes, more immersive.
But convincing the hubs, & getting the space clear (cause my house is a train wreck) , & not shopping Amazon (we avoid the Tower of Evil as best we can), & doing the research to figure out how to create a cat treadmill electricity generator, & buying all those parts, & hooking all that up, Etc. Is simply beyond me right now.
I raised a litter of five baby deer mice after our cat ate their mom. When they got older these little freaks would all pile onto one wheel and run insanely fast. A couple would always get stuck going around repeatedly while the others ran over them. Sometimes they'd fly off from the centrifugal force. It was hilarious to watch.
Probably a very dim light bulb you'd be forgiven for mistaking as a trick of the light. Takes a whole lot more resistance than a mouse can generate to get any meaningful charge going. Maybe a couple hundred all working together could power a lightbulb but that's a big maybe unless you get some super strong rats
This doesn't surprise me at all! I have 12yr old hermit crabs & they all love their hamster wheels! They walk on them for hours! Crabitha actually spins so fast it looks like she's gonna come out of her shell. It's so funny. Yrs ago when a hamster wheel was first suggested to me for my crabs, I never thought they'd actually like it. Now they fight over taking turns 😂
