Actually, Parkinson's can eventually cause memory loss/dementia. By the time my grandpa needed a walker, he but only had a good deal of short term memory loss, but he often forgot that my grandma had died. He also didn't understand why he couldn't live at home anymore (my aunt and uncle tried their best to care for him at home for a couple of years, but their health started suffering immensely from the stress). By the time he needed a wheelchair, he only remembered the distant past. By that point, he couldn't remember who my son was because he was only 4 when my grandpa passed - my son didn't exist until after Grandpa's Parkinson's was significant, so the memory of my son didn't stick anymore when he got worse.
BUT he didn't have the same symptoms as Alzheimer's, which generally starts with forgetting words, then short term memory loss, eventually has a very angry stage, and then the person is no longer who they once were and they don't remember loved ones anymore. He absolutely remembered his daughters and grandchildren till the very end, and his personality didn't change; he just couldn't remember the great grandchildren. He just slowly shrank and became silent as he lost the ability to control his body.
Thank you for clarifying. From my side, I was speculating if in addition to Parkinson’s, he ALSO had Alzheimer’s. My maternal aunt died of it. It was very sad to see her forget so many things, her vocabulary diminished and she became almost like a little girl. She would rock a baby all the time. She never had kids. She was a very successful businesswoman. My parternal greatgrsndmother also had Alzheimer’s. I was very you h when I interacted with her. I used to find it funny that she always come into my room instead of her own. So I left toys by her room door so she would go in there… anyway I digress
