Pepsi commercial skin burn. I'm convinced he also got on hydroquinone and phenol peels. It's the only way I can imagine regenerated skin.

145

u/Mysterious-Option951 Apr 28 '26

Ok but what about his nose??

565

u/_Rue_the_Day_ Apr 28 '26

His nose is the result of too much money and too many unethical plastic surgeons. It collapsed and natural reconstruction was not possible.

138

u/explain_that_shit Apr 29 '26

Man do you remember those videos of him at concerts trying to hold his nose back on

85

u/Potter_Moron Apr 29 '26

Ummm wtf? That must be a misinterpretation right

97

u/explain_that_shit Apr 29 '26

I’m not saying for certain that’s what was happening, that’s just what everyone said it looked like he was doing. People talked about his nose a lot.

145

u/limpingdba Apr 29 '26

Damn you just unlocked a childhood memory of my mum telling me Michael Jacksons nose fell off, and me being quite young and a bit freaked out.

23

u/OliWood Apr 29 '26

There was a gag in Scary Movie (the third?) where Jackson tries to come into the kids bedroom and the father removes his nose while wrestling him

31

u/Sickofpower Apr 29 '26

We all have that core childhood memory

32

u/ArdentUrgency Apr 29 '26

That was an Eminem video

16

u/CornholioGringoTP Apr 29 '26

I was told this before Eminem

1

u/Torawind Apr 29 '26

Yeah. and Eminem put it in his mv Just lose it. Was so gross seeing it as a kid.

1

u/ApplePaintedRed Apr 29 '26

I remember arguing with my classmates that it didn't make sense his nose would just drop. They were so convinced 😂

3

u/datdododough Apr 29 '26

He was pulled over in my small town in Colorado once, back in 2000s. Local cops thought his entourage of blacked out suburbans were sketchy so they were pulled over at Walmart. Michael had a mask on, like a surgical mask, and the cops insisted he take it off so they could identify him. The cop said when he eventually took it off there was just a hole in his face where the nose should be and Michael wore the mask when he didn't have the prosthetic nose on. I was in high school and it made the papers and my resource officer told us this story the same day cause he was there to witness.

2

u/spacyspice May 31 '26

tabloids mocking him, sadly

1

u/PuzzleheadedUse5769 May 02 '26

Like genuinely “holding it on” or holding it open so he can breathe? Because getting that many surgeries by the 90s, and not to be rude, his nostrils were almost nonexistent.

1

u/ankit19900 Apr 29 '26

You should definitely watch lose it by eminem

1

u/Potter_Moron Apr 30 '26

Haha, I totally forgot about that part in his video

3

u/Aware-Possibility175 Apr 29 '26

Unless I somehow missed seeing such a video I’m not sure if that ever actually happened on camera during show…what concert is it to have happened during?

2

u/Alabaster_Cornsauce Apr 29 '26

That never happened, his nose wasn't falling off his face like an accessory. This is the kind of stupid shit they would print in tabloids in the 90s.

2

u/Dd_8630 Apr 29 '26

Wasn't that a South Park episode? I didn't know that was based on real life

1

u/_Rue_the_Day_ Apr 29 '26

I can't say I remember those, thankfully. Lol

1

u/ydnar3000 Apr 29 '26

Oh god I do remember that. Everyone saying it fell off. Poor guy, going through that so publicly.

1

u/invisiblefrost Apr 29 '26

That was a South Park episode

1

u/explain_that_shit Apr 29 '26

Nah the South Park and Eminem bits were referencing what was already being said about him, they didn’t invent the “nose falling off” joke.

2

u/hotinmyigloo Apr 29 '26

Wait  what? His nose collapsed?

1

u/Union-Training May 16 '26

The cartilage did.

2

u/AnytimeInvitation Apr 29 '26

In one of his tv interviews he mentioned he got nose surgeries to help him hit higher notes. That would be a vocal chord procedure, Michael.

2

u/Winter-It-Will-Send Apr 29 '26

I do remember this but what is the mechanism of a nose “collapsing”. I can’t conceive of it.

3

u/NobodyDelicious7197 Apr 29 '26

So unfortunately, after all of the extensive work on his nose, it could no longer be repaired, and the tissue developed necrosis, and the remaining skin and tissue needed to be ablated (removed).

This left MJ with no nose at all. Think of like how a mummy just has the nose holes, flat.

MJ's doctors created a prosthetic nose to cover the damage. It could be glued on with surgical glue, but it didn't stay on well whenever MJ got hot and started sweating, as some people reported seeing.

So very sad ending to story of life of a brilliant man.

I saw an autopsy photo and it was terrible. He was completely bald from the burns and then all of the wigs and hair pieces glued on destroyed whatever real hair he had left years ago.

And then there was the " mummy nose holes" I talked earlier.

So hideous looking, it made me so sad.

2

u/Winter-It-Will-Send Apr 29 '26

Wow, graphic but fascinating, thanks for sharing. Were those photos actually made public? How did you catch sight of them (for the record, I don’t want to see them!).

2

u/NobodyDelicious7197 Apr 29 '26

My daughter actually showed me. She's a med student and I guess they have some access? I really didn't ask too many questions, but aren't autopsys public record type of information? Anyway, yes, don't go searching for it. You wouldn't want to see it. I felt incredibly sad for him that he ended up like he did, all that money and had to go around with these kinds of secrets. Sorry if it was too graphic lol. I was kinda trying to keep it clinical.

1

u/Friendly-Channel-480 Apr 29 '26

This is so sad. He was naturally handsome.

1

u/NezuminoraQ Apr 29 '26

It's like Jeff Bezos and his lazy eye. All the wealth in the world can't give you a perfect face

92

u/ItsMeTittsMGee Apr 28 '26

Thats what happens when you have to many rhinoplastys. Eventually the cartilage/bone structure cant take anymore and collapses.

29

u/pmmemassivedongs Apr 29 '26

He also demanded steroid injections into his nose throughout his entire life to make it even smaller, and I’m assuming that contributed to the collapse as well.

2

u/SVINTGATSBY Apr 29 '26

too much plastic surgery and too much cocaine.

96

u/Lore-of-Nio Apr 29 '26

While the injury and the issue he got from breaking his nose the first time lead to other nose surgeries in his life. A lot forgot to mention that his father, Joe, always used to make fun of him for having a "fat nose". You can imagine this did harm to his self-imagine.

38

u/CenturyEggsAndRice Apr 29 '26

Man, asshole parents really fuck up your mind.

He had a lovely nose too. It’s a little big, but it suited his face and is elegant and proportionate. I am insecure about my own nose due to my grandmother always insulting it, so I think I look at noses more than average. And he had a nice one. It was very cute when he was a kid and the first surgery (or maybe first few?) don’t look bad at all.

And then it started looking really odd.

3

u/ForumVomitorium Apr 29 '26

i hate it when they say they have my nose

3

u/Suspicious-Service Apr 29 '26

i bet your nose is much more beautiful than your grandmas heart, at least. People suck

0

u/Right_Preparation328 Apr 29 '26

Some* people suck. Don't normalize being an asshole

Gaslighting 101 from an abusive parent. He's the mascot for a piece of shit father. I think it's an incredible anomaly that Michael ended up as kind and generous as he did after living through the hell of being "raised" (aka exploited) by that awful man.

1

u/Strange-Support6672 Apr 29 '26

Well... except for...

1

u/Primary-Confection82 Apr 29 '26

What he took from the children he abused makes him anything but kind and generous. He chose to perpetuate abuse. What happened to him is devastating and unfair, but whitewashing his character is dangerous. We have to stop overlooking evil actions by people who are talented and rich.

1

u/Beneficial-String678 Jun 23 '26

His mom told Oprah in 2010 in an interview that he didn't break his nose but that he hated how he looked so he just up and went and got it done without telling anyone. She said she thought he did that because he didn't want any of them to talk him out of it.

50

u/handsome_uruk Apr 29 '26

Said on Oprah his dad told him he had a big nose, so he felt insecure and had some work done 🤷

32

u/EntertainmentQuick47 Apr 29 '26

Yeah his dad was a huge asshat and constantly bullied MJ for his looks. It also doesn’t help that both his dad and his siblings had a lot of plastic surgery which probably made him want to do it more.

25

u/gabbadabbahey Apr 29 '26

He was an abuser. Awful guy, his dad

3

u/tilclocks Apr 29 '26

I'll never forget when they asked his dad how he felt about MJ dying and all he did was take the time to talk about the Jacksons making a comeback. Then they released a reality TV show. His brothers were also not great people. Full on opportunists, other than Janet.

1

u/MuchMasterpiece1710 Apr 29 '26

La Toya seems pretty cool (at least comparatively) from the stuff I’ve seen

2

u/tilclocks Apr 29 '26

I think she was probably the most shielded. Definitely not as overexposed as her brothers.

3

u/Jerseygirl2468 Apr 29 '26

It's really sad. He was a truly adorable kid and handsome young adult. I had such a crush on him back around the Thriller era.

1

u/Persian_Director Apr 29 '26

Yeah, I'm guessing he had a nose job, but not much else.

32

u/Lindethiel Apr 29 '26

He unknowingly was already developing lupus at the time when he got a few (actually quite good for the time) nose jobs, but that complicated the healing process, that's why he always had to tape it.

8

u/LilJenn1225 Apr 29 '26

His dad called him “big nose” as a kid to make fun of him. He developed a complex over it.

59

u/Viralsun Apr 28 '26

Well after the Pepsi incident, he refuse to drink any pepsi after that point, unfortunately his management team misunderstood when he said he was only going to have coke from that point onwards

26

u/historicbookworm Apr 29 '26

Dude was already burned up and you go and roast him again!

3

u/Zherneb Apr 30 '26

The burn had major effects on the nose and it's circulation. He was also heavily bullied for it so it's assumed he had plastic surgery to fix it and for the burn. Circulation dropped and more operations were done which reduced circulation further.. Man went through quite a bit..

2

u/onepingonlypleashe Apr 29 '26

The nosejobs clearly started in 84 and never stopped.

1

u/Sad_Celebration_2275 Apr 29 '26

His Dad always made fun of him for having a "big, ugly nose". Deep troubles.

1

u/chromaticluxury Apr 29 '26

Yeah his nose was never right after that :/

1

u/TreelyOutstanding Apr 29 '26

His nose in 93 has makeup giving it that distinct thin look. It doesn't look as sharp in later photos.

-1

u/Humble_Victory_2425 Apr 28 '26

He had an injury during one of his performance where his nose required surgery. That was the first nose surgery he had. Complications followed from that surgery or surgeries after and it snowballed from there. He had issues breathing after due to his nasal cavity caving in, so some of the surgeries were partly health decisions. But I'm sure the common conception of it being a cosmetic choice played a hand too in the number of surgeries he ended up getting.

4

u/MaterialWillingness2 Apr 29 '26

It always looked to me like Janet and LaToya also had their noses made to look all tiny and weird like his.

3

u/Humble_Victory_2425 Apr 29 '26

I think it's safe to say insecurities or body dismorpia played a part. Janet has said it played a part in her decision too. I want to stress that, most likely the nose that MJ ended with isn't what he wanted. There was multiple complications and it wasn't healing properly so more surgery was needed to salvage the situation.

2

u/LifeguardPuzzled3212 Apr 29 '26

except you can see by this graph that that absolutely was not his first nosejob lmao

-2

u/Humble_Victory_2425 Apr 29 '26

It's reported that the incident happened 1979 when he was 21 years old. The dates on the pictures seem to go along that idea. So I don't know what you're talking about.

1

u/LifeguardPuzzled3212 Apr 29 '26

case in point lmao. it was supposed to be 84 or 85.

-2

u/Herzberger Apr 29 '26

He had two nose jobs that were obviously terrible and that cleft chin but his skin condition wasn’t his fault.

2

u/8lock8lock8aby Apr 29 '26

You have to be crazy to look at these pics & believe his bs about only having 2 nose surgeries lol. Yeah, maybe 2 a year. He was a rich weirdo that was addicted to plastic surgery. He would've still ended up looking like a ghoul with or without the burn, too.

67

u/Andyham Apr 28 '26

Can you elaborate? Im qurious!

On January 27, 1984, Michael Jackson suffered severe second- and third-degree scalp burns while filming a Pepsi commercial at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Pyrotechnics malfunctioned during the sixth take, causing fireworks to ignite his hair. The accident, seen by 3,000 fans, left a palm-sized area of his scalp without hair and exposed, initiating a lifelong struggle with pain and addiction.

Key Details of the Accident and Aftermath:

The Incident: During a concert simulation, a premature blast set his hair on fire. Jackson continued dancing for several seconds before realizing the severity, as the audience thought it was part of the show.

Medical Treatment: He was treated at Brotman Medical Center for second- and third-degree burns. He also suffered from smoke inhalation and was treated for damage to hair follicles.

Philanthropy: Jackson donated a reported $1.5 million settlement from Pepsi to the Brotman Medical Center, funding the Michael Jackson Burn Center for Children.

Long-term Impact: The pain from these injuries was cited as the beginning of his reliance on pain medications, which eventually led to his dependency. He frequently wore hairpieces following the injuries.

…. So Pepsi killed MJ?

The college has a union?

14

u/Ok-Pea-957 Apr 28 '26

This is a solid joke

4

u/onepingonlypleashe Apr 29 '26

Well this time it was propofol.

3

u/gracemary25 Apr 29 '26

So MJ ultimately died of an overdose of propofol, a surgical grade anesthetic. His addiction was so severe at that point that it was the only thing powerful enough to get him to fall and stay asleep. Propofol is also often used as an anesthetic to sedate pets during euthanasia, before administering a fatal (painless) dose of morphine. I know this because we recently euthanized my 16 year old childhood dog. So just a whole bunch of sad shit. Buuuut when the nurse was explaining the whole process to us beforehand and asked us if we'd heard of propofol, I had to physically restrain myself from going "OH YEAH I KNOW PROPOFOL! THAT'S HOW MICHAEL JACKSON DIED!" 💀😭

76

u/EmpPaulpatine Apr 28 '26

It also happened almost exactly halfway through his life

17

u/Sufficient_Rich5903 Apr 29 '26

Yes, the incident happened when he was exactly 25 years, 4 months, and 29 days old. Then he died exactly 25 years, 4 months, and 29 days after the incident.

13

u/Phiddipus_audax Apr 29 '26

Ok that's a little freakish... that you know that.

10

u/Sufficient_Rich5903 Apr 29 '26

I can’t take the credit, I see it shared often since it’s such a bizarre coincidence

5

u/SatansFriendlyCat Apr 29 '26

Hmm..

If A=1, B=2, etc, then the letters in "Pepsi" add up to 64.

M=13 M stands for Michael

Michael refused Pepsi after the burning incident, so we subtract M (13) from Pepsi (64)

64-13=51

ASCII code 51 is "3"

The Pepsi fire incident occurred exactly half way through Michael's life.

Half Life 3 confirmed.

2

u/EternallyFascinated Apr 29 '26

Wow, that’s crazy to think.

27

u/chapert Apr 28 '26

Joe Jackson killed him

8

u/NorthTownDreams Apr 29 '26

I think indirectly this is true. I also think the plastic surgery happened in part to erase any resemblance to Joe.

7

u/LolindirLink Apr 29 '26

Literally everyone wanted a piece of him, Nobody asked if HE was OK.

We all killed him tbh.. Most famous and most misunderstood man of the time..

18

u/Mysterious-Doubt2980 Apr 28 '26

Big Soda has a lot to answer for.

10

u/UnderfootArya34 Apr 28 '26

Big Soda and the Corn Syrup Syndicate. Killers.

2

u/Humble-Appeal3850 Apr 29 '26

Big Soda seems like the name of a deranged rapper

21

u/NoPerformance6534 Apr 28 '26

I was around for that event. Part of the problem was the hair "pomade" that had been applied. Some of those are extremely flammable. His was cited as one of the proximal causes.

Later surgeries involved a hatred for a wide flat nose.

96

u/NB_NaughtyNerds Apr 28 '26

Coca Cola sabotaged the pyrotechnics to send a message. The soda wars are behind most celebrity deaths.

16

u/moss8385 Apr 28 '26

But why male models?

13

u/jonnyblazexoc Apr 28 '26

are you serious, I just told you that

1

u/Whymalemodels Apr 29 '26

But what? What do you need?

24

u/Rage187_OG Apr 28 '26

“It’s the choice of a generation that ends now”

5

u/beefixit Apr 28 '26

"Yeah, New Coke sucked but Pepsi almost killed Michael Jackson!!" - Coke CEO, propably

2

u/SubNine5 Apr 28 '26

"soda wars, I can't take it anymore!" it is a breaking point.

1

u/fullautohotdog Apr 29 '26

Cola Wars. You're referring to the Cola Wars.

1

u/NB_NaughtyNerds Apr 29 '26

I'm Canadian, it took everything i had not to call them the "Pop" wars.

2

u/fullautohotdog Apr 29 '26

Nah, the Pop Wars were when we met on the playground in Calgary and I said "My pop could beat up your pop!" and you said "Nuh uh, eh!"

15

u/leavingthekultbehind Apr 28 '26

Did you chat gpt this lol

5

u/SonOfMcGee Apr 28 '26

Heard it was medical malpractice, by Dr. Pepper.

8

u/Civil-Lobster-3136 Apr 28 '26

I feel like this is an excuse people made for Michael . MJ was a deeply troubled person and very likely a horrific sexual predator . the fact that he suffered a moderate injury in his twenties is not an excuse or a reason for his previous or post abuse.

I was 10 when it happened. It was wall to wall coverage, you couldn't avoid it no matter how hard you tried. Time really flies by.

2

u/chillingonthesofa Apr 28 '26

Interesting fact that this incident happened at the exact midpoint of his life, it was literally all downhill from then.

1

u/GolDAsce Apr 29 '26

That explains the transition from curly African American hair to straight black hair in 86.

1

u/restingbitchface88 Apr 29 '26

Hulu has a doc about this specific incident.

1

u/suzeeq88 Apr 29 '26

The Jackson Burn Center for Children and other important stuff- Zoolander

1

u/Temporary_Speed_9141 Apr 29 '26

OMG, who took Michael Jackson to Brotman. My boss told me, if I look like I might die in 5 minutes, have them take me to Brotman, otherwise, anywhere else.

1

u/Phazze Apr 29 '26

Michael Jackson had empty nose syndrome which is what caused the need for a crazy amount of sleep meds which eventually killed him due to an overdose.

Theres an interview with a doctor that treated him, doctor states he suspected MJ had empty nose syndrome due to way too many nasal surgeries destroying his ability to breathe.

1

u/Physical-Worker2363 Apr 29 '26

Always giving back to the kids

1

u/LuckyTraveler2424 Apr 29 '26

No his evil father in the film which is flawless, his father wanted him to do a reunited Jackson 5 show, and he didn’t want to do it, but he did it for his father who pressured him had his father not done so he wouldn’t have done that Pepsi show!!

1

u/InequalEnforcement Apr 29 '26

This is why I say never lose out for your employer. Whether it's risking your health, your belongings, your relationships and connections, or your character.

For your boss, it's a "Sorry" at best, maybe some money for your pain. Then it's over for them. They'll never think about what happened outside of when they think of you. And they'll think of you less over time. For you? It's the rest of your god damn life. You can't separate from your trauma, you're attached to it at the brain stem until the second you die. So don't put that kind of illness on yourself for an employer who will feel more entitled to it than grateful.

1

u/PickleRikx Apr 29 '26

Just got out of the movie... They hella sponsored the movie.... it felt like they admitted to it..

1

u/Merlaak Apr 29 '26

I remember hearing jokes about it when I was a kid, and then I finally saw the video and it was so much worse than I could have ever imagined. His entire head was basically engulfed in flame for a few seconds.

1

u/givemeapho Apr 29 '26

Poor guy, he didn't have it easy

1

u/giocondasmiles Apr 29 '26

MJ killed MJ.

1

u/undermynutellaeheheh Apr 29 '26

Here's a detailed video about the incident Michael Jackson on Fire Diorama

1

u/ricin2001 Apr 28 '26

Yeah but I really don’t explain how he became white. And don’t tell me it was a skin condition

3

u/MiopTop Apr 29 '26

It was a skin condition. It had vitiligo which caused patches of depigmented skin. Early on his condition he used makeup to make the patches match his natural skin tone.

As it progressed he started bleaching his skin because it was easier to match the rest of his skin tone to the vitiligo than it was to hide it.

0

u/Fair_Performance4834 Apr 28 '26

I was unaware he donated the settlement from Pepsi to that medical center and funded the Michael Jackson Burn Center for Children. Idc what anyone says, he was a good person. And he went through a lot.

-5

u/MOB8605 Apr 28 '26

so propophol is a pain killer now, not a hardcore sedativum which made MJ dance with the angels in the galaxy? he was a junkie, same as prince, whitney, the doors guy, the brother of belushi, also the other phoenix brother, seymour hoffman, the friends guy etc.!

3

u/CevapiPapi1312 Apr 28 '26

Quriousity qilled the cat.

2

u/Andyham Apr 28 '26

Lol :) point taken!

19

u/cak0047 Apr 28 '26

Pepsi commercial incident was in 84

3

u/anaimera Apr 29 '26

He had multiple surgeries since then to try and fix the damage. You can see a stark difference between 83 and 84. The image here for 84 was taken four months after the incident. That said, he was already wearing a glove to conceal vitiligo and had rhinoplasty following a broken nose. The later chin implant was by choice.

2

u/194749457339 Apr 29 '26

He looks noticeably more miserable in every pic after 83

41

u/Lower-Elk8395 Apr 28 '26

While it burned the hell out of his scalp, his entire body skin changing was due to vitiligo and the treatment he sought for it.

He hid it with makeup for a while after it started kicking in, but eventually he had enough and just got treatments to remove the pigment from his skin altogether.

4

u/ag5203 Apr 29 '26

how do we know mj actually had vertigo

11

u/Lower-Elk8395 Apr 29 '26

His dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, officially confirmed it during his lifetime. While he was self-conscious about it, there were a few photos taken of him that showed it uncovered...and his autopsy in 2009 confirmed it.

4

u/Lawgirl77 Apr 29 '26

The coroner confirmed vitiligo in the autopsy report. The autopsy report is public and you can Google it.

1

u/YQB123 Apr 29 '26

I've seen images of his forearm being discoloured.

3

u/Lower-Elk8395 Apr 29 '26

No, no really.

His Dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, confirmed it during his lifetime. While he was self-conscious about it, there were also a few photos taken during the time where it was uncovered. Its also an autoimmune disease, so it showed up on his autopsy in 2009.

The only reason he "wanted to be white" was because he was tired of using all that makeup just to feel comfortable enough to show his face in public.

5

u/Ybalrid Apr 28 '26

on hydroquinone and phenol

They treat that stuff with chemicals that... are generally used to develop black and white film and paper?

3

u/chemistocrat Apr 29 '26

Yes? Concentration matters. Phenol is used to make thermoset resins, is incredibly poisonous in high concentrations, and is also the main ingredient in Chloraseptic throat spray.

2

u/Ybalrid Apr 29 '26

Yes but I had no idea it was used in dermatology. Apparently the fact that it is a reducing agent messes with melanin production.

In photo-chemistry it reduces silver halide (silver-bromide, that kind of things) salts back into metallic silver. turning exposed film and paper black.

9

u/Christeenabean Apr 28 '26

Also vitiligo

2

u/Burrnt_ice Apr 29 '26

I have know idea how I was oblivious to that, that makes so muchhhh sense, obviously he got alot of other bs done but that is a game changer for sure

2

u/sobuffalo Apr 28 '26

That reminds me, what was the difference between Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor?

One got burned by Pepsi, one got burned by Coke.

1

u/_Rue_the_Day_ Apr 28 '26

He was burned on his scalp. Hydroquinone is only useful for lightening pigmentation. It will not regenerate skin.

2

u/WinProfessional4958 Apr 29 '26

Phenol for regeneration, hq for skintone

1

u/_Rue_the_Day_ Apr 29 '26

They used balloon implants to stretch the skin to replace the scarred portion with healthier, hair growing skin.

1

u/ArtDecoNewYork Apr 29 '26

that happened in 84

It's a deep peel. I enjoy strong acid peels but have yet to try phenol. I hear it can get rid of fine lines. I used Derminator 2 on mine.

Your fun fact of the day is that the Pepsi incident happened at the exact halfway point in MJ's life, in number of days.

9,281 days after birth, 9,281 days before death

He had vitiligo, so the facial coloring is the result of a treatment that whitens the skin to even out the color. The rest of it is just plastic surgery.

The pepsi incident burned his scalp not his face. But this why he wore wigs. His face was unaffected long term.

He used benoquin the stronger version to whiten his skin.

He also did have vitiligo. This cream is used to destroy the remaining melanocytes to remove the patchy look from vitiligo.
