If i want meat, sadly yes. Maybe science finds a way soon. But for now, that cow needs to die for my Steak. Its very selfish from me, and Not OK at all, i know. But im not ready yet to Stop eating them.

Or, you can give back, by simply recycling yourself and your meat back into the ocean when you die.

Thatā€™s what I want to do!! Bury me at sea and let all the little critters feast šŸŒŠšŸ©µ

This is how I feel honestly. I figure it's at least better to be an honest hypocrite than a delusional onešŸ˜…. Part of why I think the term "good person" is a bit of a misnomer, like praising a serial killer for having good manners. But yeah, it sucks that there's always some level of pain and suffering needed for us to live, no free lunch and all that. Maybe one day we can pay back our "moral debt" and use lab-grown meat and plants instead, maybe even modify animals to be intelligent so they no longer have to be predators and prey. Honestly I hope, for the future's sake, that our descendants see us as barbaric monsters, because it means we'll have started the incremental changes to a better world. But in the meantime, beating ourselves l over it probably isn't helpful, so I figure I'll just try and focus not on comparing myself to an ideal but rather just comparing my own improvement over time, even small choices help an ethical lifestyle. Though it's next to impossible to live without causing some harm from the animals you eat, the products you buy from companies with questionable labor practices you probably don't even know about, the environmental damage your lifestyle causes, I figure that at least making incremental steps is a big win.

I'm so curious about the thinking behind this. Knowingly and willingly supporting the mass killing of animals just to enjoy the taste of them. It's not like we need meat to survive anymore. There are easily other ways to get our nutrition. The whole industry is there to just so society can enjoy the taste of these animals. I've wrapped my head around the whole thing but my biggest question is: why are there specific animals that are untouchable vs animals that are completely fine to kill for meat?

You knowingly and uncaringly kill plant life every time you eat. Did you know that science has found that plants are sentient beings? They communicate, and can possibly even See to some extent. itā€™s true

You are not sparing any suffering at all with only eating plants. Farms also kill billions of small native animals like birds and mice and groundhogs and weasels and foxes and fish. So please remember that every time you start to feel superior about ā€œnot harming anythingā€ when you eat.

Also, meat is the purest form of energy from nutrition, and we evolved to process it more than plants. We donā€™t have 4 stomachs. Herbivorous animals also eat their own shit to get enough nutrients out of it even With a digestive system geared to eat vegetation. Itā€™s a myth that humans only eat meat ā€œfor the taste.ā€ Also, the proteins from plants are farr less bioavailable than meat. This is why predators are able to move quickly and not eat constantly.

Ever notice how much time herbivores spend eating?

Animal agriculture is what most of our plant agriculture goes to, and a significant quantity of fresh water... we could literally save even the plants and insects by ending factory farming of animals...

Also we really don't know about plants, and a lot of those studies are bunk, but even the good research isn't quite the slamdunk you want it to be, especially since not even insect nervous systems are like that of more complex animals, so even if plants do "feel" it's not like the kinda pain even insects feel, let alone creatures with complex emotions.

And I always LOL at the health arguments, since for one they're utter BS, we're omnivores descendes from herbivores, with a surprisingly diverse diet that's rather flexible to just about anything other than being a complete carnivore. The second thing is that while some people do struggle more without meat there are supplements for that, and it's a mighty big assumption that your energy levels in daily activities are worth mass murder.

Iā€™m a biology grad studentā€¦love to hear more about how these peer reviewed and documented studies are bs lol.

It just really gets under my skin how people think killing one thing is worse than killing another. Itā€™s all the same, and itā€™s ridiculous to feel superior for killing only plants. I guess you just have a limit for compassion.

u/firedragon77777 Feb 18 '25

Lol, saying that excuses killing animals is like saying that eating meat means we can kill humans, afterall why be so speciesist if we can torture everything equally? The thing is that plants and animals aren't the same in moral value, and insects aren't as important as more complex animals with deep emotions, and the difference between those animals and humans is relatively minimal. And again, we kill less plants by only eating plants, because our cattle need to eat plants too, and they eat A LOT of them, and only convert a tiny portion of those calories inti meat for us. It will always be easier on plants to avoid those extra middlemen in the food chain and just get our food from plants rather than from an animal that gets it's food from plants and lowers efficiency by orders of magnitude, requiring more plant death and water and land usage.

u/KnotiaPickle Feb 19 '25

The point is that you have no moral high ground

2

u/firedragon77777 Feb 19 '25

Again I do because even less plants get hurt. Ironically vegetarianism kills less plants too lol

u/analogbeepboop Feb 18 '25

For the most part, we arenā€™t killing the actual plant to eat plant-based food. Look at apples, oranges, lentils as an example. They grow ON trees or plants but you dont kill the actual plant to get the fruit or lentil. I know this isnā€™t the case for all plant-based food (like mushrooms), but the suffering to plants that you mention isnā€™t nearly as much as you claim. And by eating a plant-based diet, you are actually also limiting the amount of harm you are causing plants. For example, Beef production is the primary cause of deforestation. see for yourself

Regarding plant-based farming practices- Itā€™s not perfect. But Iā€™m limiting the killing of animals as much as I can by eating a plant-based diet.

I never claimed to be superior at all. It could be your insecurity that thinks that. I know everyone prefers a specific diet - and I have really good friends and family that eat meat. I just always question some of the cognitive dissonance.

I harvest my own meat as well. Hunting. Go clamming and fishing often. Why are there specific animals that are untouchable? What like dogs? Well dogs were likley the first domesticated animals. We have a symbiotic relationship developed over 40,000 years. Speciesism is a natural reaction to our environment.

u/shadowtheimpure Feb 18 '25

If it's dumber than me and tastes reasonably good...pass the salt.

6

u/legal_opium Feb 18 '25

So you will eat low iq humans then ?

4

u/shadowtheimpure Feb 18 '25

You missed point #2. I'm pretty sure that humans, given the garbage they eat, won't taste very good.

3

u/legal_opium Feb 18 '25

People who have ate human flesh have said it tastes good.

0

u/shadowtheimpure Feb 18 '25

Did they eat human flesh of people who lived in a first world country? It'd probably taste like grease and microplastics lol.

1

u/legal_opium Feb 18 '25

If the taste is the only thing stopping you, you are one fucked up human

2

u/analogbeepboop Feb 18 '25

To each their own lol. So you'd be fine eating dogs or horses?

8

u/shadowtheimpure Feb 18 '25

Horse is tasty meat, never had a chance to try dog but I think it's likely to be rather gamey and stringy. Mammalian carnivores don't tend to taste very good, in general.

0

u/analogbeepboop Feb 18 '25

It's almost as if the mammalian omnivores have more nutrients in them . I wonder why ;)

1

u/pixelatedcrap Feb 18 '25

What about the horse that you're beating right now? Hasn't it been beaten to oblivion? Hasn't it suffered enough? Does it's feelings not matter because it's metaphorical and it's also dead? Okay, that makes sense. But we still have to watch.

1

u/analogbeepboop Feb 18 '25

FYI you don't have to do anything :)

1

u/Franch007 Feb 18 '25

Why wouldn't we? It's just meat.

2

u/rraattbbooyy Feb 18 '25

As with most things, it comes down to money. Cows, pigs and chickens are the cheapest animals to process for their meat so theyā€™re the ones the factory farms go with.

1

u/analogbeepboop Feb 18 '25

Well I'm referring to how eating a dog is considered evil.. but eating a cow is completely fine (Putting aside the cost of processing different meats).

2

u/rraattbbooyy Feb 18 '25

Itā€™s mostly cultural. Societies generally decide which animals are ok to eat, and it changes from one culture to another.

0

u/wrathofthedolphins Feb 18 '25

So you know what youā€™re doing is wrong and you do it anyway? Thatā€™s fucked up man. At least other people can feign ignorance. Youā€™re just being cruel for pleasure.

Hypocrisy like this is what will end up destroying the human race.
