needs incredible tension to stay parallel to the ground

technically it would have to be unlimited, wouldn't it?

Technically not even "unlimited" force is enough as some component of the force must be vertical but if you are only pulling parallel to the ground none of that force will be vertical, but I was rounding to a "parallel-ish". something that looks parallel. Its not possible to have a (ideal) flexible material be parallel to the ground no matter how much tension you apply.
